>> from abc news in new york. this is america this morning. >> good tuesday morning, everyone. >> i'm rhiannon ally, and i'm lionel moise. andrew is on assignment. we begin with a breaking news. overnight, new concerns about quality control at boeing. >> yeah, the airplane maker is facing new scrutiny after reportedly failing dozens of audits. and overnight, another disturbing development word that a boeing whistleblower has been found dead of an apparent suicide. >> but we begin with the new details about those failed audits at boeing this morning, new concerns about quality control at boeing, the new york times reports. the company has failed 33 of the 89 audits. the faa conducted after a door panel blew off in mid-flight on this alaska airlines plane in january . investigators later found four bolts were missing. >> following the incident, the faa took immediate action to increase its oversight activities, and we will continue to put safety first. >> the faa also conducted 13

audits of boeing supplier spirit aerosystems. seven reportedly resulted in a failing grade, the times say. documents show the faa observed mechanics at spirit using a hotel key card to check a door seal, and spirit mechanics applied dawn soap to a door seal as lubricant. boeing, responding overnight, saying we continue to implement immediate changes and develop a comprehensive action plan to strengthen safety and quality with transparency at every turn. >> do you feel like they're making safe airplanes right now? >> right now, with our oversight, we're certifying them as safe. yes. >> meanwhile, a boeing whistleblower who raised concerns about production standards has been found dead after an apparent suicide. >> this is not a737 problem. it's a boeing problem. the body of 62 year old john barnett, a longtime boeing employee and quality manager, was found in charleston, south carolina, where he was being questioned in a case against boeing. >> barnett told the bbc in 2019 that workers deliberately used

faulty parts on the production line. boeing denied his claims, and this past january, he told tmz he was not surprised when that door panel blew off the alaska airlines flight. >> what we're seeing with the door plug blow out is what i've seen with the rest of the airplane as far as jobs not being completed properly, inspection of steps being removed. >> in a statement, boeing said we are saddened by mr. barnett's passing and our thoughts are with his family and friends in just the last 24 hours. another unusual incident on a boeing jet. 50 passengers were injured on a 787 dreamliner over australia, many thrown into the ceiling. describing a sudden nosedive, the airline calls the incident a strong shake and blames a technical event. the good news is that the black boxes will very quickly determine whether this was an aircraft malfunction or just

clear air turbulence, and back to that door plug incident, the justice department has reportedly launched a criminal investigation into boeing related to whether it violated a settlement reached after two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. >> three preschool students are among five people who were killed in a school bus crash in western illinois. police say the bus crossed into the path of a semi truck on route 24, and then both burst into flames. investigators will try to determine why that bus apparently crossed over into the truck's path, breaking overnight. >> haiti's acting prime minister is stepping down a possible major step toward ending the gang violence plaguing the country. caribbean leaders say ariel henry has agreed to resign once an interim prime minister is named. he's canceled elections since the country's former president was assassinated in 2021, prompting a gang takeover of the capital. in the meantime, many haitians are struggling to survive with the lack of health services. the u.s. is pledging another $100

million in aid now to washington , and a proposal to potentially ban tiktok here in the u.s. the proposal could take a big step forward today. >> abc's m wynn is here with the details m good morning. >> rhiannon. good morning. yeah. that proposal to potentially ban tiktok in the u.s. due to national security concerns appears to be gaining momentum. but a very influential republican, former president trump is now opposing the idea. this morning, members of congress are preparing to receive a classified briefing from u.s. intelligence agencies on the security threat posed by tiktok. it comes ahead of a house vote tomorrow on a bill that would require tiktok's chinese parent company to sell its u.s. operations to an american company or be banned from the u.s. >> i have a lot of concern about the interference of authoritarian and totalitarian governments like china and like russia in our open and free and democratic society. >> the bill is expected to pass the house with bipartisan

support. its future in the senate remains unclear. u.s. intelligence agencies have included tiktok among their top threats to national security, but now former president trump, who spearheaded efforts to ban the app when he was president, is reversing course and opposing the bill. in an interview yesterday, he said a ban would make young people, quote, go crazy. >> there are a lot of, users. there's, you know, a lot of good and there's a lot of bad with tiktok. but the thing i don't like is that without tiktok, you're going to make facebook bigger. and i consider facebook to be an enemy of the people. >> trump's reversal comes just days after he met with the republican donor, who reportedly has a major financial stake in tiktok. but trump denies speaking to that donor about tiktok. at their meeting, the company says a ban would trample the first amendment rights of 170 million americans. people who make a living on tiktok videos have flooded capitol hill opposing the bill. >> 90% of our sales are on

threats that emanate from the border, and some of them are criminal threats. >> as for the possible ban on tiktok, president biden says he will sign the bill if it makes it to his desk. >> lionel. all right, thank you. former president trump is defending his remarks after appearing to suggest that he's willing to cut entitlement programs like social security. president biden pounced on trump's comments, but the trump campaign insists that his words are being distorted. here's what he told cnbc. so first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlement s, in terms of cutting and in terms of also, the theft and the bad management of entitlements, tremendous bad management of entitlements. >> there's tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do. >> trump's campaign says he was talking about cutting waste, not the entitlement programs themselves. >> the man who's saying one of the best known songs from one of the 1980s most popular movies

and one of the most infamous murder cases in recent decades. scott peterson has a virtual court appearance today, 19 years after he was convicted of killing his wife, laci, and her unborn child. her body was found in san francisco bay. he is serving life in prison, but the los angeles innocence project claims there's new evidence to support his claim of innocence. it could involve dna from a burned out van found near the peterson's home in modesto. the judge today could order prosecutors to turn over more evidence. >> now to the british royal family facing new questions about this doctored photo of princess kate and her children, critics are demanding answers on something far more serious than just a family photo. this morning, the british tabloid headlines read kate's photo bomb and ask how her family photo could become a pr disaster. >> will they now release the original photograph and tell us exactly when it was taken?

>> it all started sunday when the palace shared what was soon to be revealed as a doctored photo of the princess with her children to celebrate mother's day in the u.k, royal watchers immediately spotted at least ten inconsistencies. a sleeve on princess charlotte not lining up a misaligned zipper on kate's sweater, and jagged tiles behind prince louis. >> i don't think it's an ai generated photo. i think it was basically somebody took a series of photos and was just doing some beautification of the photos. >> kate seen here yesterday next to prince william, headed to a private appointment, issued a rare for the royals public apology, saying like many amateur photographers, i do occasionally experiment with editing. i wanted to express my apologies for any confusion. the family photograph we shared yesterday caused all of this is fueling more speculation about kate's medical condition, which remains a mystery after she underwent abdominal surgery in january, remaining out of the public eye instead of dousing
