seven news, south bay reporter lauren martinez has a closer look at this case and the risks it exposes. >> lori. >> dan and amy, the indictment was unsealed today, and it revealed that this engineer was hired by google in 2019. over the years, he made periodic uploads and allegedly uploaded more than 500 unique files containing confidential information. >> you know, one of the reason we got interested in ai from the very beginning is that we always viewed our mission as a timeless mission the race to dominate artificial intelligence between the u.s. and china is well underway. >> a former software engineer at google is being charged with stealing ai technology from the company. the department of justice made the announcement on wednesday. >> a federal grand jury in san francisco charged that linwei ding also known as leon ding, stole valuable trade secrets from google. >> ding, who is a chinese

national, was living in newark. an indictment alleges that he transferred sensitive google trade secrets to his personal account while secretly working for two ai companies in china. >> we should not just look at it as just the technology to make you know life easier. it's actually a national security. >> in october, world security leaders from the group known as five eyes gathered in palo alto. the summit addressed threats to innovation, specifically economic espionage from china. according to court documents, the technology ding allegedly stole involves the building blocks of google's advanced supercomputing data centers. >> this goes deep into not just having the software. we're talking about the design of the chips that will run the supercomputers, computers that are going to train the ai. >> we also spoke with associate research professor and founder of uc berkeley risk and security lab, andrew ready, the data loss prevention uh- procedures, even at a firm like google i

mentioned before, is fairly well endowed. >> appears from my perspective to be fairly easy to circumnavigate gate ready said. >> this case is a warning to all companies and government agencies to think about an insider threat problem, trying to make sure that we develop this technology safely. >> and so, you know, i think that this is a bad news story, but i think that, you know, bearing in mind all of that good work that's trying to happen in the background is really important as well. the fact that it's google, like amazon, like microsoft, and we build so many applications on top of that core technology, i don't think that should be lost in this case. >> now, ding is charged with four counts of federal trade secret theft. if convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison. live in san jose lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> thank you. lauren. now to the new developments in california's high profile race for u.s. senate. east bay congresswoman barbara lee is looking ahead to how she's going to finish out her terms after not moving on in last night's primary election.

in a concession statement she posted online, representative lee says in part, quote, i will continue to deliver for my district and for california and look forward to working with our people powered coalition to push our elected leaders to take bold action. lee lost out on the chance to be california's next u.s. senator, with democrat adam schiff and republican steve garvey both advancing to the general election in november. now, because she ran for senate, she could not run for reelection in the house. >> all right, let's move outside now with a live look from our emeryville camera tonight, clouds are still lingering in parts of the bay area this evening. yeah. >> earlier, though, plenty of active weather like this confirmed funnel cloud seen from vacaville and parts of solano county. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel is tracking it all for us tonight. sandy, how's it look? >> yeah, it's a lot calmer, i can tell you that much. dan and ama. it was an action packed day this afternoon. and this evening. let's take a look at live doppler seven. and you can see that area of circulation has moved into southern california that low. that was the lifting mechanism. the sun destabilized

the atmosphere and we had enough moisture for that. we saw thunderstorms here along with the downpours and of course, hail reports of hail as we take you back in time, you can see those thunderstorms, one of those storms was strong enough right over solano county that that funnel cloud was reported south of vacaville. i did confirm that earlier this evening with the weather service in sacramento. and as we take a look at live doppler seven right now, we do have some fog out there, but it is much quieter. san jose picked up 6000/800 of an inch of rain. normally you're in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains, but in the last 24 hours you've been doing well. oakland. a 10th of an inch. san francisco little less. livermore 2700. fairfield a half an inch and half moon bay 4/10 of an inch. sunshine is coming your way, but in the morning there will be some fog. temperatures in the 40s. noontime. you're looking at plenty of sun and bright and milder weather for the afternoon. clear skies in the evening. i'll let you know how long this break from the rain will last. coming up ama.

all right. >> thank you. sandhya. new at 11. a report released tonight shows that last month was the hottest february ever recorded, according to europe's climate change service. february was also the ninth consecutive month of global record breaking temperatures. the month as a whole was three degrees warmer than the pre-industrial era. experts say that unless greenhouse emissions are stabilized and more global temperature records can be expected in the future. >> you know, it's an important part of our everyday lives, something that most of us really probably don't have to think about. having a good supermarket or a grocery store close by. but for one local community, that's been a real challenge the past couple of years. in tonight's abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough, we're going to spotlight a long awaited grand opening, which happens tomorrow. a grocery outlet, bargain market will take the spot of an old cvs serving marin city. it's a community that's really been disadvantaged and underserved for decades, and there is plenty of excitement about this, we're told 1000 shoppers are expected tomorrow alone. abc seven news reporter

j.r stone has more now from the north bay, where opening up a marin city grocery outlet. >> that's what's happening. it's happening tomorrow. >> owner operators chant avaf and bruce. we couldn't be more excited about their grocery outlet bargain market opening up in marin city after months of planning, we will have a line. >> we will definitely have a line for sure. we are expecting over a thousand customers as we were at the store and workers were preparing, one person after the next either walked up or drove up hoping to go shopping. >> i'm sorry we're not open yet. >> i know, i'm just, lucky here. okay. >> march 7th, tomorrow at 7 a.m, the opening is huge for two reasons. >> first, marin city, an underserved community since world war two, lacked grocery options. >> the community has been so warm and welcoming, they know there's a need for a grocery store in marin city, just in general. >> second, it's been 30 years

stone, abc seven news. >> ivf services in alabama could resume as early as tomorrow. the governor has signed legislation into law that protects in vitro fertilization providers from potential legal liability. lawmakers scrambled to protect ivf treatments after alabama supreme court ruled last month that a frozen embryo is a child. the new legislation was put on a fast track after a public outcry from ivf patients and supporters. three major ivf providers had stopped services over legal concerns. >> patients need to have the same protection as the doctors and the providers, and that's what we're trying to do. >> so far, republican lawmakers have refused to take up a bill addressing the legal status of embryos, and even the governor called today's bill a short time measure, saying there is, quote, more work to come. >> super tuesday set the stage for a rematch of the 2020 race for the white house between joe biden and donald trump this morning, nikki haley ended her

campaign all but ensuring the former president will be the republican nominee. however, she did not endorse trump, leaving her supporters essentially up for grabs. and they're not exactly thrilled with their choices. >> i wish there were two better options. >> it hurts my soul to say that i will vote for joe biden over donald trump. >> there's plenty of other people who are earlier in their careers who could run and do a better job than those two. >> one person who did endorse trump today was senator mitch mcconnell. mcconnell in the past denounced the former president and blamed him for the january 6th attack on the capitol. >> february of 2021. shortly after the attack on the capitol, that i would support president trump if he were the nominee of our party. and he obviously is going to be the nominee of our party. >> both candidates face challenges. the former president has legal issues. and for biden, it's immigration. the war between israel and hamas, along with questions about his age. president biden delivers his

tomorrow only on good morning america. >> money. let's go. >> let's do it. >> arrest movie crew member is now in jail. after a verdict was reached today in the fatal shooting of the film's cinematographer. >> took jurors less than three hours to find armorer hannah gutierrez guilty of involuntary manslaughter. prosecutors told jurors gutierrez is negligent. and loading a prop gun led to the death of cinema photographer halyna hutchins. actor alec baldwin fired the gun during a rehearsal on the movie set in 2021, killing hutchinson, injuring the director. now, after a two week trial, jurors say gutierrez acted with willful disregard for the safety of others. >> that was her job to check those rounds, those firearms and if no one wanted to pay attention or do that, then she could stop the work.

>> gutierrez faces up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. she'll be sentenced in april. baldwin is scheduled to go on trial for an involuntary manslaughter charge in july. and tonight, the parents and sister of halyna hutchins are reacting to the conviction, releasing a statement through their lawyer. they state in part, quote, we are satisfied that the jury, based on the evidence, found hannah gutierrez reed guilty beyond a reasonable doubt for her part in the taking of helena's life. we look forward to the justice system continuing to make sure that everyone else who is responsible for helena's death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions. national guard troops will soon be patrolling new york city's subway system. >> new york's governor made the announcement today. she's sending in 750 guard members, along with 250 additional police officers. they will patrol platforms and check bags for weapons. additional teams will handle people showing signs of mental illness while crime in the city overall is down. the start of the year has seen a

spike in the subways. the governor says it is giving riders anxiety. all right. >> back home in the east bay, people are going dumpster diving in oakland. but it's not what you think. it's to raise awareness. the city is doing trash inspections. it's part of an effort to educate residents on how to properly throw away their garbage, to comply with state law. this is part of an effort not only to clean up the environment, but combat climate change. all residents, businesses and apartment buildings should be dividing it up into trash, compost and recycling. these audits will continue through next friday if the inspectors find a problem, they will leave an oops tag and explain it, and if everything is correct, they will leave a good job. tag >> all right, let's turn to the oscars. anticipation the clock is ticking, as you see here toward hollywood's biggest night . less than four days to go until we watch the stars arrive here on abc seven. >> yeah, and they'll be lining up here. this is a live look at the dolby theater on hollywood boulevard. the red carpet is somewhere underneath that big

tent, but it should be a lot of fun. and still a whole lot of work to get done. of course, before everything in on the red carpet is ready now, reporter alicia vitarelli is there with our abc news sister station, giving us a sneak peek at the carpet and the green room for the stars. >> the red carpet has been rolled out. it's down, and it has been covered so it can stay pristine and fresh for all of the stars who will walk it on sunday. now when you watch those red carpet arrivals, this is where all of the stars will stop so that they can get their photos taken so everyone can see what they're wearing. they'll make their way inside the dolby theater, and once they're in there, there's a very special green room that's been set up for anyone going on to that oscar stage. and we got a sneak peek inside. this is the rolex green room backstage at the 96th oscars. each year there's a brand new design. this one is inspired by nature. rolex wanted this year's green room to look like an oasis. all of the

materials used in here are sustainably sourced, but they also wanted it to feel like an oasis for the presenters and the performers. and of course, the nominees. a place to kind of take a break from all of the action that is happening right out there on the oscars stage outside crews are hard at work building the red carpet on what would normally be a busy thoroughfare. >> now this is our super bowl because it is the biggest night that hollywood has. they close hollywood boulevard down for a couple of weeks now to get this all ready. >> kabc and on the red carpet, entertainment reporter george pennacchio says there's just something electric in the air during oscar week. >> this is one of those things that even people who live here come to hollywood just to see what it's like in person, just across the street from the red carpet. >> people are packing the hollywood museum to feel close to the stars. >> it's very exciting this week because it's oscar week. the visitors are here, and it's great to have them in this building and they can learn about who used to come here, who

as we pan around from the city by the bay, looking towards the east bay, you can see that layer we do have some fog out there along with some clouds. of course, the north bay places like santa rosa, 48 degrees dew point of 47 with calm conditions . you know there will be some fog in just a matter of a short time. but here's what i want to draw your attention to. the big next big thing. break from the rain, dry the next two days. plenty of sun and milder weather. if you have been waiting for that and you're just really needing a break. all right, high pressure is going to build in and that's what's going to provide us with a break. certainly have some more rain in the forecast. so don't worry about it if you do like the rain. so we have some clouds still lingering across parts of the south bay. the east bay and the coast, along with some fog forming that area of low pressure has moved on out of here. it is now over southern california where it's taking its moisture. our temperatures at this hour, anywhere from the 40s

to the 50s. here's a live view from our sutro tower camera. and overnight tonight we're looking at areas of fog, certainly cooler weather. so you'll need those jackets next two days. sunnier and milder. short sleeve can you can pretty much get away with it. and this weekend daylight saving time begins on sunday morning. oscar sunday we have a possibility of some showers. so 30s and 40s out the door early in the morning. but notice that fog that's around will clear out and you're in for plenty of sun for the afternoon hours. here are your morning temperatures. they'll bottom out about 34 at lakeport, 46 in san jose. you can see 50 degrees there in half moon bay tomorrow afternoon, wall to wall sunshine from coast to inland and most areas other than the coast and lakeport will be in the 60s tomorrow, so enjoy that. friday is even warmer. we're going to flirt with 70 degrees in some of our warmest south bay and east bay locations. for those of you wondering about our next opportunity for rain saturday morning, our best chances in the north bay. it's a very narrow
