5:33 pm
clinching the nomination and barring some major surprises another big question of course how long will nikki haley stay in the race? look at the map tonight. on the republican side, voters in 15 states casting their ballots. tonight, 865 delegates up for grabs. 36% of the total delegates at stake in the entire republican primary. the polls now closed in nine states. we do have some results now coming in. abc news now projecting trump will win the virginia republican primary based on an analysis of the exit poll and the vote in so far. abc news also projecting trump will win the north carolina republican primary. abc news projecting trump will also win the oklahoma republican primary tonight. we're also projecting at this hour donald trump will win the tennessee republican primary. he will win the maine republican primary. that result just in tonight. we're also tracking vermont at this hour, where nikki haley is very close to donald trump there in the race. massachusetts, where there is also a very close race tonight in the republican primary between donald trump and nikki haley. we're getting our first look at what the voters are also saying in these exit polls. nikki haley supporters were asked how would they vote come
5:34 pm
november? this is preliminary exit poll data coming in from virginia, north carolina and california. haley supporters were asked in the presidential election this november will you vote for the republican nominee no matter who it is? in north carolina 81% of haley supporters said no. in california 69% said no. and in the key battleground of virginia 68% of nikki haley supporters said no, they would not vote for the republican nominee no matter who it is. that is a potential hurdle going forward for donald trump. we do have all this covered tonight beginning with rachel scott on the campaign trail for us. >> reporter: tonight from massachusetts to virginia, texas to california, millions of voters lining up to cast their ballots. donald trump hoping to nearly lock up the republican nomination with a super tuesday sweep. more than 850 delegates up for grabs. >> we want to send a signal that we're coming, this freight training coming. >> reporter: this could be the last stand for trump's last republican challenger, nikki haley.
5:35 pm
>> it is time for a new generational leader who can leave the negativity and the baggage behind. >> reporter: but today across the country, many republicans voters firmly in trump's camp. from retired teacher deborah pergerson in north carolina -- >> he's conservative. he was pro-life. and i think he did a whole lot for the country when he was president. >> reporter: to joseph hudson in tennessee -- >> trump is a very coarse individual, but at least he knows how to run the country. i think he'll make a strong president again, as long as he stays focused and does not become vengeful. >> reporter: still, in mobile, alabama, charles bolton, who has voted for trump before, is voting for haley this time. >> the guy scares me to death. he is so far off with his comments and his radicalism. >> reporter: president biden on the ballot in 15 states tonight, facing nominal opposition. still biden urging democrats to turn out as a show of strength to kick off the general election against trump. >> i guess the single most important message is that our democracy is at stake. literally our democracy. >> reporter: that message
5:36 pm
sinking in with william brinkert, a retiree from massachusetts. >> i think that the history of trump, the lawlessness he's exhibited, his threats of reprisal if elected i think are serious concerns. i think all of his actions, historically, undermine democracy. >> reporter: in alabama, social worker jessica rush anxious at the prospect of a trump return. >> unfortunately, the racist remarks he has made, the bigotry against women and a lot of people of color, so it -- i'm uncertain with him. he gives me anxiety. >> reporter: donald trump says he doesn't care if nikki haley stays in this race or drops out. he barely even mentions her when he campaigns lately. the former president now focused on the general election and that likely rematch with president biden, david. >> david: a real sign of where we're headed. rachel scott leading us off. former president trump as rachel said focused on president biden.
5:37 pm
president biden focused now on donald trump. so let's get right to our political director rick klein at the big board mary bruce with us as well and rick, the big question is if we are officially undergoing this rematch soon within the next couple of weeks given the numbers we're seeing so far tonight where do things stand between both of these candidates? >> look, if the general election starts now it is going to be a very tight race. this is the latest polling average from our partners at five thirty eight. in the key battleground states the seven states likely to determine the presidential election, and you can see that across these battlegrounds donald trump has an edge, sometimes a small edge, sometimes a bit of a bigger one and that's what makes tonight's results in all of these primaries so important. when you hone in on the places where nikki haley is doing very well, where her supporters are really dug in, those are the independent voters. those are much more likely to be voters that are up for grabs this fall, and if haley gets out of this race they are going to be the target of both trump and biden for the coming months. >> david: which is why it's so interesting, rick, that some of these nikki haley supporters said they're not going to automatically vote for trump come november. bring in mary bruce. because you have new reporting that president biden within the biden campaign has said he with
5:38 pm
need to go much more aggressively after donald trump. biden supporters out there looking at those battleground numbers where trump leads in every one of those states have got to wonder what is this campaign doing? >> the campaign really sees this as a pivotal point as the kickoff for the general election, and we have seen the president really ramping up his attacks against donald trump, taunting him as a loser. the president trying and relishing to get under trump's skin. and the campaign feels that voters really haven't registered yet that this is likely to be a trump-biden rematch, so they want to use this match to outline what is at stake, really crystallize the key differences between these two and of course, david, the president will have a big chance to do that later this week during his state of the union address. >> david: we're back on the air a short time from now. rick klein, mary bruce, our big thanks to both of you. the entire political powerhouse team will be right here with me for abc news live coverage of super tuesday. the races, the polling, where things stand in each of the battlegrounds as rick just showed us, biden versus trump if this election were held today what would we see. we'll break down the numbers pont v tonight. 10:00 p.m. eastern right here on abc. in the meantime we move on
