>> good friday morning, everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> happy friday i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the increasing danger that law enforcement officers in this country face every single day on the job. >> the latest example, local officials serving an eviction notice in missouri. and then shots rang out in the kansas city suburb of independence, missouri. a procession of police officers escorted the body of one of their own to the medical examiner's office. the latest american police officer killed in the line of duty. >> our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families and this entire community that has been devastated. the tragedy unfolded yesterday afternoon when a court employee tried to serve an eviction notice at this home. >> that's when police say someone inside opened fire, killing drexel mack. a civil process server in his early 40s. the suspect then opened fire on first responders, killing 35 year old police officer cody allen, a father of two. officer cody allen, uh, served this community not once but twice. >> um, as an independent police

officer, he is a hero. >> the suspect was taken into custody with minor injuries. investigators have not said what led up to the shooting. but our kansas city affiliate, kmbc, reports the property had delinquent taxes with more than $28,000 due yesterday. the incident, similar to a recent shooting in minnesota, the thousands gathered in the minneapolis suburb of burnsville wednesday, paying their respects to two police officers and an ems worker, shot and killed while responding to a hostage situation on february 18th. the number of police officers shot on duty in the u.s. has hit a record high 378 were shot last year. that's a 62% increase since 2018. back in missouri, the two other police officers who were shot are expected to survive. police, meanwhile, have not released any more details about the suspect, but a suspect is in custody after a deadly shooting at a dentist office near san diego. >> one person was killed, two others were injured. police do not know a motive or they're not saying at this point they're not

saying if the suspect and victims knew each other either. they say the 29 year old shooter fled in a u-haul truck, but was later arrested overnight. >> now to the southern border, president biden and former president trump visiting texas, promising voters that they will address the migrant crisis. biden focused his message on congress while trump focused on crime. abc's perry russom is here now with more perry. good morning. andrew. >> good morning, president biden and former president trump are focusing on very different solutions to address the migrant crisis. and that was clear during their visits to the border on the same day in the same state, very different messages from the president and former president addressing a top issue for voters, the historic surge in illegal border crossings under the biden administration. >> so instead of playing politics with the issue, why don't we just get together and get it done? >> biden urging congress to reconsider a bipartisan border security bill killed by house republicans last month at trump's urging, the bill would have boosted funding for more border patrol officers and immigration judges. >> a desperately need more resources, need more agents, more officers, more judges, more

equipment in order to secure our border. >> trump, joined by the governor of texas, promising to begin mass deportations and build more border wall if he's elected. he focused on crime singling out the case of lincoln riley, the georgia nursing student allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant. joe biden will never say lincoln riley's name, but we will say it, and we will remember it. >> we're not going to forget her. it's been just a horrible story. >> later on fox news, trump repeating his concerns about migrant crime, citing statistics without providing sources millions and millions of people. >> and they come from jails and prisons. they come from mental institutions and, you know, a step above that, the insane asylums and you just it's just hard to believe while crime is a concern, a recent study found america citizens are two times more likely than undocumented immigrants to be arrested for violent crimes and are four times more likely to be arrested for property crimes. >> we're like a the sidelines of a parade and you guys are the

end result. >> the border patrol union supporting the bipartisan bill touted by president biden. but at the same time, the union faulting biden for his administration's policies and for visiting the border only twice since taking office. >> the timing is a little off. he could have been here a couple of years ago, last year, three years ago, but at the same time, you know better late than never. >> with that border bill stalled, the president is considering taking executive action to tackle the crisis. and that could include tougher asylum laws. an announcement could come at the state of the union next week. rhiannon. all right. >> thank you for that, perry. security is tight for the funeral today for russian opposition leader alexei navalny, two weeks after he died in prison. the funeral is being held at a church outside of moscow. his supporters have been urged to pay their respects, even though authorities may try to block them. officials denied a request to hold a public memorial, citing covid restrictions, and hearse companies were reportedly threatened not to provide services. hamas claims at least 112 have died after a chaotic stampede and shooting in gaza,

while aid was being distributed to desperate palestinians, israeli defense forces, acknowledging firing into the crowd which surrounded the trucks carrying food. >> hamas calls it a massacre, but israel says it fired only warning shots. president biden says the violence could stall negotiations for a ceasefire. >> ever since hamas attacked israel and israel invaded gaza, there has been a disturbing rise in anti-semitism, especially on college campuses. now more students are speaking out, saying the hatred and fear must stop this morning, jewish students are demanding action from washington. they say they're living in fear on college campuses. as the war rages between israel and hamas. >> here's the context. it's open season on jews on our campus, a congressional committee yesterday hosted students from nine schools, including harvard, mit, columbia and stanford, who implored lawmakers to hold their universities account.

football star this week is a stark reminder of the toll the disease is taking on younger americans. >> here's abc's andrea fujii this morning. >> friends, family and fans are remembering craig roe. a former star linebacker for the university of michigan, losing his battle with colon cancer. >> michigan has forever been defined by guys stepping up every year. >> he was just 33. roe was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer last year. his death part of a troubling trend. colon cancer is now the deadliest cancer for men under age 50 and the second deadliest cancer for women under 50. doctors say obesity and lifestyle can play a role. >> what we're concerned about clearly are food or environmental exposures that may be there, but it's hard to know. what we do know is this that for people under the age of 50 diagnosed with colon cancer, about a third of them have some remarkable family history that
