gio, you have been following this. so many questions, but an investigation is under way to try to figure out what happened. >> gio: it's just so sad because we're talking about two people who are dead after a private jet made a crash landing on i-75 near naples, florida. according to the faa, there were five people on board the plane that left columbus, ohio for the naples airport friday afternoon. the pilot reported duel engine failure during the approach to the airport before colliding with a southbound vehicle on the highway. dozens of emergency and rescue teams rushed to the scene searching for survivors. three miraculously making it out alive, but their conditions are unknown right now. the ntsb, of course, is investigating the crash. but as i was telling you, one of the big questions here is why both engines failed. that is very strange. steve ganyard, one of our aviation experts, told us that

that's usually because you run out of fuel but in this case you see those flames right there. so intense and that really does suggest that there was fuel on board. so so many questions to look at here. >> whit: absolutely. we know you'll follow it. thank you for that, gio. also this morning president biden defending his mental acuity after the special counsel's report on his handling of classified documents. his republican rivals seizing the opportunity to use that report to their advantage. abc's senior white house correspondent selina wang joins us now from washington with more. selina, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, whit. sources tell us that the president is fuming over the special counsel's report and the white house is now in damage control mode. they know that the president is legally cleared but any political damage from this could last longer. this morning, the white house on the defense. doubling down on president biden's mental fitness and slamming the special counsel's report. >> do you think the special counsel's report is fair? >> the way that the president's demeanor in that report was characterized could not be more wrong on the facts and clearly politically motivated.

gratuitous. >> reporter: special counsel robert hur declined to prosecute the president for his handling of classified information. >> this is not only misleading, they're just plain wrong. >> reporter: but the report describes the president as a well-meaning, elderly manage with a poor memory, and diminished faculties and advancing age. the president furious at the special counsel's suggestion that he could not even remember when his son beau died. >> how in the hell dare he raise that. frankly, when i was asked the question, i thought to myself, it wasn't any of their damn business. >> reporter: the white house ripping the report for questioning the president's mental acuity. >> that part of the report we don't think lives in reality. >> reporter: but republicans already seizing on the report. nikki haley saying, the white house is not a taxpayer-subsidized nursing home. trump runs about even with the enfeebled biden. he would get crushed by a democrat with a pulse as

democrats rush to defend the president on the campaign trail. >> it was just a smear and cheap shots and just taking things out of context. trump is going on 78, and the president is 81 years old. >> reporter: now the biden campaign, they are brushing off this report. one official telling me that voter views of the president's age are already baked in. their view is that, while some voters may be concerned about the president's age, they care more about the issues he's running on, like defending democracy and abortion rights. janai? >> janai: all right, selina, thank you for that. we're also this morning following two earthquakes felt overnight by millions, first in hawaii and then los angeles. you can see items shaking and falling off of shelves as a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck hawaii's big island. there are reports of people feeling the quake on other islands, as well. officials quickly shutting down fears of a tsunami saying it would not happen, and no serious damage reported. then just a few hours later look at this, a 4.6 magnitude

okay, so there's two big weather headlines i have to put on your radar, number one in the south if you live in san antonio, you could see large hail. tomorrow, new orleans, hattiesburg, mobile and monday the severe weather threat shifts into georgia and the florida panhandle. we could see an isolated tornado and damaging winds. second story, snow, tuesday, 7:00 a.m. we could look at a snowy commute for upstate new england, some spots getting six inches or more into upstate new york and pennsylvania. that's a look at the forecast across the country. let's see what's going on at home.

in place order is now lifted after a shooting last night at uc berkeley's campus. police were called about the shooting just before 9 p.m. outside the student union in sproul plaza. cell phone video you see here from inside the building shows students running for safety. university officials confirmed nine shots were fired before the shooter was arrested. it's unclear what led up to the shooting to the weather now and the chill outside. good morning lisa. good morning stephanie. >> coming out of the 30s in some of our inland valleys and boy, what a gorgeous shot here from our exploratorium camera, where it is 49, in san francisco, 50 in oakland and from sutro. a lot of blue sky to look forward to today. upper 30s still in petaluma. highs today. upper 50s to low 60s. >> lisa, thank you and thank you all for joining us. the news continues right now with good morning america

♪ >> janai: we are back now on a busy morning here at "gma." we are kicking off super bowl weekend with fun both on and off the field with more taylor treats and the latest from las vegas. that, of course, is coming up. but first, some of the other top stories that we're following this morning. the pentagon identifying the five marines killed when their helicopter crashed in dangerous weather flying from the las vegas area to san diego. lance corporal donovan davis, sergeant alex langen, captain benjamin mouton, and captain miguel nava and jack casey.

their chopper going down in the mountains of southern california during a training flight. that crash is under investigation. >> whit: wisconsin recorded its first ever tornado in february. experts say the record-breaking warm temperatures set up the perfect scenario. at least two tornadoes were confirmed and the national weather service is investigating reports of several more. >> gio: and the cdc reporting a slight uptick in the number of people visiting a doctor with symptoms of respiratory illnesses this past week. the good news, though, flu and covid-related hospitalizations have decreased. good news there. >> whit: absolutely. now to super bowl sunday. this year's extra special with my 49ers facing off against the chiefs and thanks to taylor swift young girls and their dads all across the country are connecting over football and that includes me and my daughters. so we all sat down with our will ganss to talk about how the superstar is bringing families together. will, good morning. that was so much fun. >> reporter: so much fun, whit. yeah, get this.

a new survey found 71% of americans plan to watch the super bowl this year which is up from just 66% last year. and 25% of those people, they say that taylor swift is a big reason why including two very special members of the johnson household. taylor swift is in her sports era and her boyfriend, travis kelce -- >> my super bowl era. >> reporter: for the first time so are many swifties. >> is it fair to say that we are in our football era? >> yes, definitely. >> we didn't watch football before taylor swift. >> reporter: viewership among girls 12 to 17 was up 53%, lifting total nfl viewership up by 7% from last season. >> it's fun to gather them and open them up to the football world. >> reporter: dads and daughters coming together on game day, a state of grace that families can't get enough of. we went to the epicenter of the san francisco swiftie super fan

cheese steak sliders. >> super simple. you can make these in advance. you'll take some well-seasoned ground beef and we'll use some sharp provolone. it's going to have that ooze that you get with american cheese, but it's great. >> whit: you're going to put me to work. you'll make balsamic onions. >> you'll pickle these. it's going to bring out that sweet and sourness of the onions. you can just add a little balsamic vinegar. you will add it here and then at home you'll give them a little squeeze. >> gio: this is so good. >> they go right on to those burgers. >> whit: you can get it ready in advance so when the party comes, easy assembly. >> you can put your guests to work. this is great for a crowd. go for it. >> whit: come here, you. >> gio: the flavors are so good. that balsamic is perfect. >> it is great and also has a little bit of -- a little aioli. you can use mayo. take a little garlic, add that.

"such a fun age" got you in. now, just write the book they would have never let you write before. >> janai: that is incredible because i loved "such a fun age," the journey of it. like, i am realizing you wrote that book and i loved it. i really did. so this new book is about three women in different places in life at the university of arkansas. tell us about it.

caregiver role. amelia, in my first book she is a domestic worker and millie is an r.a., a weird baby-sitter and i'm interested in care in both of these books for sure. >> whit: any interesting or fun stories from your time as an r.a. that you can share on national television? >> right, right, usually they behaved themselves but i do remember these two girls came to my room because a flood started from their ceiling, like water was coming in and they're looking at me saying what do we do and i'm like, call the police, i don't know but you have to be cool and do the right thing and call the proper numbers and then we took care of them, okay. >> gio: one great thing you do, you interview people just in your daily life and you take a lot of their stories. >> i do. >> gio: students and coffee shop workers. >> i do. i wanted millie to work at a coffee shop and love normal jobs and wanted to make sure i was getting the coffee scene perfectly. i interviewed my

worker. she was very kind and ended up talking and she told me this beautiful tradition that her family used to have. she is from a family of seven kids and their family had a bus because there were so many and on christmas eve they would drive to the dollar store and one kid would wait in the car while everyone else went and shopped for them then they would switch and she talked about the electric feeling of knowing her brothers and sisters were shopping for her and how alive she felt and that story went right into the book. it was so sweet. yeah. >> gio: so fantastic. kiley, you're awesome. thank you so much.
