tonight, power outage problems stretching for nights on end. tens of thousands of bay area p-g-and-e's customers sitting through another night in the dark. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us all of that as we're gearing up for another mix of active weather tomorrow. rain, snow and some danger along the coast. >> yeah, the national weather service is warning of sneaker waves overnight and through the early morning around 4 a.m, those swells can surge farther up the beach and catch you by surprise. >> now for more on what to
11:01 pm
expect, abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking it for you. sandhya. >> yeah, dan and take a look at the beach hazard statement. it is in effect, as you just mentioned, until 4 a.m. tomorrow. that's because breaking waves up to ten feet, those large swells expected to impact the coast. right now, bodega bay is at 12 and point arena at 11, but the weather service is saying, generally speaking, this is what we're expecting a light level one system is headed our way, and as it does, it's going to begin your morning commute with some showers at 7 a.m. rainfall will increase in coverage and intensity by 10 a.m. you will notice some pockets of moderate rain, even brief heavy rain going into the noontime hour. the winds will pick up 46 miles an hour at 9 a.m. along the coastline, still gusty well into the afternoon, 38 miles an hour point arena. you will notice 33 san rafael, so be prepared for the potential for some more trees going down. not nearly as intense as the storm over the weekend, but it is a one tomorrow. rain moderate at times. gusty large swells and the possibility of snow over our

higher peaks. i'll be back with a full timeline coming right up. dan all right, thank you sandhya. >> well, it's been a long few nights, certainly for many people in the bay area. the power outages are affecting everyone from restaurants and families. and now, to those with specialized needs. >> p-g-and-e's says as of an hour ago, nearly 40,000 customers are without power. now it's slowly dropping, since that was in the hundreds of thousands on sunday night. but each remaining outage has many people on edge. >> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez is following the frustration in this is the kind of power outage that needs to be covered. >> this is the kind of situation that needs to be covered. >> diane kelly says her husband is currently on the third floor of a skilled nursing and assisted living center in saratoga. >> kelly says the facility has been running on an emergency generator since sunday. >> the staff is doing the best that they can and they and they do a great job, but without power, how much can you do? >> p-g-and-e's had a crew
11:03 pm
working the outage off saratoga los gatos road tuesday evening. >> when we're able bodied, we can do it. they're not able bodied, you know, and the staff can only do so much. >> reporter a family, an unincorporated scotts valley, have been staying in a hotel after sunday's powerful storm caused a massive redwood tree to lean on their home. the homeowner said after getting the runaround between a utility company and law enforcement agencies, and his insurance company is insurance will help cover the removal of the tree for an estimated $34,000. extreme weather is hitting homeowners already dealing with an insurance crisis. >> it is literally the hardest market i have seen in my 35 years. i've never seen a time where insurance companies don't want to sell insurance. the state continues to see an exodus of big and small insurance companies. >> some companies have cited wildfire risk, inflation and construction costs. some agents say price controls within the state system makes it difficult
11:04 pm
for insurance companies to increase rates. >> i think that this is going to sound scary, but i think consumers need to brace for large rate increases for home insurance. i don't think companies are going to get back in the market until they can get 50 to 75% rate increases in the preferred markets in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news while things dried up today, here much of southern california faced another day of rain. >> los angeles has seen more than ten inches since sunday. homes are barely hanging on in santa barbara and isla vista. cliff eroded, leaving apartment buildings on the edge. look at that. 45 people were forced to evacuate after inspectors evaluated the properties. residents were allowed to return home, so we thought maybe the storm would finished. >> um, uh, yesterday. but it came out with a vengeance again this morning. >> more than 300 mudslides were reported throughout los angeles. officials warn there could be more to come with a smaller storm rolling through tomorrow. president biden and governor newsom pledged to provide

11:06 pm
that julie and alex have had trouble keeping the lights on, either. at one point during last year's winter storm season, they had no electricity for weeks at a time. julie tells me that while she appreciates the hard work that p-g-and-e's crews do, the struggle to keep the power on during weather events has become a seemingly constant worry. >> it's really frustrating to feel like we're forgotten about, frankly, being in a more rural setting and, you know, it's just as hard for anyone in to go day and day. we were without power. the electricity is only one concern, julie and her neighbors have to drive along the road leading up to their small mountainside community. >> and you come across thick mud and heavily damaged roads. remnants left behind from previous storms that alex says are still not fixed. after over a year of waiting, we had a power line go down. >> we had a large tree uh- go down, making our road inaccessible, p-g-and-e's estimates the couple's power will turn back on sometime wednesday evening, but after many disappointing experiences in the past, julie says she's not counting on it.

>> we are expecting, you know, right now that we're going to be out of power for a while and half moon bay time to go to sleep in the dark. >> tim johns for abc seven news. >> asleep in the dark once again, there are still some local parks, schools and golf courses staying closed because of outages and storm damage. we have all of that in one place for you. abc seven news.com. or you can go to the abc seven news bay area app as well. >> and now to the new developments in the city of oakland. in an attempt to cut down on violent crime, governor newsom is calling in reinforcements in the form of the chp. governor newsom will deploy 120 cal highway patrol officers to help tackle crime in oakland and neighboring cities. mayor shengtao says it could happen in as soon as a week. chp officers will help with traffic stops, recovering stolen vehicles and patrolling the hegenberger corridor near the city's airport. that area has made headlines in recent weeks, with the announced closures of the in-n-out and denny's there. we spoke with abc seven news insider phil matier earlier today. >> chp is not bound by oakland
11:08 pm
rules, and that's a quiet little unspoken deal here. when they're on the ground with oakland cops, they can do things that oakland cops can't do, phil says. >> of those things is chasing suspects. oakland police aren't allowed to chase unless it's an extremely violent crime. that's in order to prevent dangerous situations in neighborhoods. in 2023, crime statistic show violent crimes in oakland increased more than 20. robberies went up nearly 40, car thefts. rose 45. and we went to our abc seven neighborhood safety tracker to get more perspective. and you can see it too. we have this tool with full data for oakland, san francisco and san jose on the front page of our website, abc seven news.com uh- teachers union political group, has filed a second lawsuit over the proposed baseball stadium for las vegas. that's right. they are seeking to block the state from spending taxpayer dollars on the ballpark. the legislature approved up to $380 million for the project. >> now, this comes as the mayor

11:10 pm
steer steakhouse. >> not only the oldest steakhouse on the strip, but one with a city by the bay kind of feel to it. >> if you walk into the golden steer, you're going to feel like you're touching and feeling that atmosphere. that was san francisco back in the 60s and the 70s, the leather, the lights, the feel. >> amanda signorelli and her husband run the golden steer, which has been in her family for many years. it actually used to be on san francisco street, and this was in san francisco plaza, now called frisco plaza. pack were regulars along with elvis, who was said to be seen eating burgers at the bar when he first started coming. but the san francisco feel is what likely attracted baseball great, and san francisco native joe dimaggio. here, many, many years ago, joe dimaggio, marilyn monroe here at the golden steer. >> we actually have two joe dimaggio booths. we, as we like to say, we have one joe dimaggio booth for when him and marilyn were happy and one when they were not so much. >> it appears that the who's who

11:12 pm
tonight and this was held at the formula one pad. that's what they call it. that was the staging area. and we have some video for you to show you just what the scene was like, because the nfl throws one of these parties every year. and as you can see, filled with lights and music and they even had robots uh- up on the third floor a lot, a lot going on here. i'll just say uh- it was free food and free drinks. some people had those fancy rum, tequila and vodka drinks and others of us did not. and uh- and a good time was had by all. but really several thousand people were at this event and good fun, good fun in las vegas. as for what we did earlier in the day, both the 40 niners and the chiefs talked about brock purdy. you might be surprised about what the kansas city players had to say about
