flooding in southern california, the santa barbara to san diego, hit hard. los angeles, seeing its rainiest single day since 2004, here in the bay area, we're dealing with extreme damage of our own here. >> panic. >> just panic. we're kind of stranded up here. we can't take our car down this driveway once again. >> california now cleaning up from a powerful winter punch. sure are. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz tonight. >> the damage is staggering. some places have seen a month's worth of rain squeezed into the past 48 hours, and crews have been working around the clock. >> yeah, let's bring in abc seven news. weather anchor spencer christian saying on top of it for us. of course, and whether we might be in the clear tonight. spencer we are indeed in the clear. >> i'm happy to say, dan and emma, we had, of course, as you know, a fierce level four storm yesterday. it was downgraded to level one today, but the rain continued. the showers into the evening hours before they

tapered off. and now we look at live doppler seven. you can see that it is dry across the bay area. there's some moisture in the atmosphere, but we are not experiencing rainfall at the moment. so we are in the clear for a while. so here's your day planner for tomorrow. early tomorrow morning, 7 a.m. we'll have bright skies with just a few clouds around temperatures ranging from 43 inland to about 47 around the bay. then by noon, we'll see mostly sunny skies, 53 inland, 56 around the bay shoreline, 54 at the coast, 4 p.m. still bright, sunny skies, 57 degrees inland and at the bay, 54 at the coast and then going into the evening hours 7 p.m, mostly clear, but there will be a few clouds gathering tomorrow evening ahead of a our next round of rainfall, which i'll tell you all about just a little bit later, then dan ama. >> all right, spencer, thanks very much. well, in terms of the storm's most immediate effects on the bay area, the large number of power outages certainly is at the top of the list. p-g-and-e's live outage map here shows you just how widespread they are. the utility says that right now about 95,000 bay area customers are still

without power. that's a massive improvement, though, from yesterday, when nearly 400,000 customers were in the dark. at one point, p-g-and-e's says in terms of outages, this single day storm was rivaled only by two others. in 1995 and 2008. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez is in san jose, where the outages continue. >> we have to move all of this into the refrigeration car outside, residents and restaurant owners are scrambling for food storage, unsure when the power will come back on. we're at bay with pg and e right now. we're just waiting, hisham abdel fattah, the owner of el halal amigos and willow street pizza in san jose, said his restaurants lost power sunday afternoon. 20 years in the business, i have never had to close a restaurant due to a storm longer than a day. >> on monday, abdel fattah rented a refrigerated van to transport food to another of his restaurants in los gatos. he estimates a loss of $8,000 in inventory and 12,500 dollars in

sales. so far. >> we couldn't run away from the spoilage, so we ended up losing a lot. >> lincoln avenue in willow glen had virtually no foot traffic. businesses had signs posted. they were closed due to the outage. weird very weird. >> i'm used to. this is one of my favorite places to be the dark didn't keep people from grabbing a slice or a drink at bebo's ny pizza. >> the owner said they were fortunate to hook up to a generator quickly, thanks to a customer, so we're able to keep the make line going and kind of keep things rolling. >> we got a little bit of light and the oven is gas, so fortunately we can still cook and as long as we have business and people hanging out and orders coming in, we're going to keep the doors open in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> tonight, president biden called governor newsom about the recent storms and offered federal support in the state's capital city. one family witnessed a large tree collapse onto their home and even caught it on video. the sacramento family says the roof collapsed in and a look inside shows huge

cracks across the ceiling. luckily, no one was hurt. with more on the historic storm across the state, here's abc news reporter jacqueline lee in southern california is still facing a barrage of rain. >> the atmospheric river under relenting as neighborhoods battle mudslides and flooding. los angeles, getting more than a month's worth of rain in 24 hours in beverly hills, at least half a dozen homes were damaged and multiple people needed to be rescued. abc's rob marciano was there. >> so many slides in the hills around los angeles. but this is by far the worst. this home being pushed off its property onto this roadway. everything inside exploding out of it and sliding down this hill, including this piano in ventura county, flood waters trapped this man with fire fighters racing to save him in the beverly glen neighborhood of los angeles, ryan davis and hisfa wg sound around 2 a.m. it felt like a jet engine was started, like right outside of our window. >> and then we look outside and

then there's just mud and debris coming down. up and down the california coast. >> powerful winds knocking out power to thousands and pummeling trees. airports like san francisco international, burbank and lax faced delays and cancellations. in santa barbara, the airport closed until 1 p.m. local time due to a flooded airfield, the highest rain totals in southern california include ten inches of rain shattering records in some areas. the national weather service issuing a rare hurricane force wind warning in the bay area, with wind gusts over 100mph. the storm is expected to last through tuesday. jacqueline lee abc news, santa barbara two schools in san jose, several schools in sonoma county, as well as cal state east bay main campus are all closing again tomorrow because of power outages. >> the best way to stay on top of these updates is with the abc seven news bay area app. that is where we are keeping you on top of live updates from the storm, as well as full forecast. just make sure to enable the apps

notifications when you download in the north bay, a frightening incident at a high school in santa rosa has a lot of people worried and asking questions about school security. >> police say someone in a ski mask showed up with a knife at montgomery high school this morning, the latest in an alarming number of incidents at school. abc 70 reporter tim johns is here in the newsroom. tim, you've been talking with people who think all of this is a call to action to protect kids and teachers. yeah >> dan, you know, safety at montgomery high school as well as at other schools in the santa rosa district has been a major topic of discussion recently. the school has seen a substantial uptick in violence and gang related activities. so much so that back in december, santa rosa police were stationed temporarily on campus for the two weeks leading up to the winter break. now, just today, authorities say that around 8 a.m, an intoxicated 16 year old male suspect wearing a ski mask was trespassing on the montgomery high campus. police tell us that 16 year old was checking door handles at the

school and approached several students after being escorted off of school grounds by staff, police found the suspect at a nearby grocery store, where they detained him at some point this morning. officials say that suspect also flashed a knife at one student and threatened to stab him. amid this uptick in violence at santa rosa city schools district leaders say student safety is their top priority. >> it is essential to acknowledge that schools alone cannot bear the entire responsibility of tackling the root causes of youth violence and gang affiliation. the entire community must come together to support our students and address the underlying issues. now up until 2020, the district had school resource officers who were responsible for keeping campuses safe. >> now there's discussion over whether they should be brought back full time. some experts who deal with youth youth violence believe a multifaceted approach is the best way to ensure student safety. >> community based organizations that's in the neighborhood are even close by. that's work with

these individuals that the school can tap in with, because sometimes these kids won't talk to the school folks, but they will talk to the cbos. >> and that 16 year old suspect was booked into juvenile hall on four different offenses. he is not a student at montgomery high school. in the newsroom tonight, tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you so much. now we are just a few days away from the lunar new year. the holiday is on saturday this year, ushering in the year of the dragon. today, san francisco leaders and police held an event at chinatown's dragon gate to talk about safety ahead of this year's festivities. they encourage you to be aware of your surroundings. if you see something, say something. >> there has been some reports of situations where some of our elderly folks in the community have been scammed. >> so again, just be aware if someone's coming up to you or approaching you about blessing your, you know, money, jewelry, so forth, to be aware that this is typically a scam, that they'll try to swap out your

goods and steal your items. >> san francisco's board of supervisors is set to vote wednesday on a measure to expand the city's community ambassador program throughout chinatown during lunar new year celebrations. >> owns costco, wants to build a new store in san jose, but some neighbors aren't very happy about it. the new costco would be located in this shopping center you see on the map. lower were invited to a community meeting tonight to talk about it on top of the list, noise and increased traffic in the neighborhoods nearby. one person says there's a student petition going around addressing some of these concerns. it's been circulating for three days, apparently with a couple hundred signatures so far. latoya factory will no longer hold its roots in northern california after five decades. >> the mexican packaged food company is relocating its santa rosa plant to moundridge, kansas , next month. it was founded by the tamayo family in 1977, according to the press democrat food group says it would cost too much to expand in this region. they say the goal is to

to 5 degrees cooler in most locations, 13 degrees cooler in novato. so let's take a look at our current temperature readings. it is 51 degrees in san francisco right now. also low 50s at oakland, hayward, san jose, san mateo, and 46 at half moon bay. up in the north bay and over to the east bay we go. it is down to 39. in petaluma, 45 at santa rosa and napa, 49 livermore and low 50s at fairfield and concord. and these are our forecast headlines tomorrow. a mix of sun and clouds, lots of sun tomorrow will be happy to see that. wednesday and thursday lightrillionain and showers. and then through the weekend we expect sunnier, drier and warmer weather coming our way, which we will welcome with open arms overnight. a few clouds around, but lots of clearing as well. overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the low to mid 40s, some upper 30s in our coolest inland locations. tomorrow mainly sunny skies, high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s and we still have some flood concerns. the ground is saturated, high tides tomorrow could produce some coastal flooding around the bay shoreline and north bay shoreline, and up in the inland inland valleys of the north bay.
