here at the desk with me. >> stephanie: great to be with you. good morning, everyone. >> gio: it's a good morning, indeed. whit johnson, you were there at the u.s. open where coco put her name in the history books when she won that women's singles championship. that was just incredible, whit. >> whit: right, gio, amazing, and it all happened right here. it was 19-year-old coco gauff's first victory at a grand slam event, overflowing emotion. that special moment when she searched out her father in the crowd and embraced him in front of the world. gauff later received a phone call from president biden congratulating her, inviting her to the white house. we'll have all the highlights, the history made here, and we'll also look ahead here to today's men's singles final, plus, my interview with tennis legend billie jean king 50 years after the open became the first grand slam to offer equal pay for men and women. that's all coming up. so much excitement from right here at arthur ashe stadium. for now, we'll send it back to you, gio. >> gio: oh, we are so looking forward to that. we'll check back in with you

very soon, but right now we are going to turn to morocco. here all eyes on that urgent rescue effort following the massive earthquake. thousands dead and injured. >> stephanie: abc news foreign correspondent tom soufi burridge is live on the scene of that disaster on the ground in marrakesh. good morning, tom. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, guys. the death toll from that powerful quake constantly rising. more than 2,000 people now known to have been killed. as you can see here in the medina or old city of marrakesh, there's damage, but in hard-to-reach rural areas near here, there is utter devastation with entire communities flattened, and this morning, we're in a vital phase of an urgent search and rescue operation. this morning, a desperate search now under way after the deadliest earthquake in morocco in more than 60 years. rescuers in remote, mountainous areas in a race against time, digging through the destruction for signs of life, working on top of now flattened concrete walls, searching for people

trapped beneath. many buildings here made from basic materials, standing little chance against powerful tremors. rocks littering mountain roads, hampering rescue efforts with morocco's military deployed to help. in some villages, they are already burying the dead. morocco beginning three days of national mourning. so far more than 2,000 people confirmed killed with a similar number injured according to moroccan officials. but amid such widespread devastation in hard to reach areas, the true number of missing and dead is still not clear. the epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude quake in the high atlas mountains, about 40 miles south of marrakesh. an ancient city packed full of tourists. one woman capturing that moment and the frightening force. >> i'm really scared. >> reporter: violently shaking a restaurant. people running out of buildings

with panic on the streets as the earth shook. then the aftermath with buildings destroyed and this mosque in marrakesh badly damaged. just outside the city, furniture and belongings covering the streets. buried underneath the destruction. morocco's king mohammed vi promising his officials will accelerate the rescue operation and evacuations, as well as addressing the supply of drinking water, food, tents, and blankets to affected areas. usaid saying it will send a small team of disaster experts to assess the situation and work with morocco to identify unmet humanitarian needs, and countless homes that are still standing across this region are now not safe. in marrakesh, we found people spending a second night out on the streets. guys, the extent of the human cost from friday night's earthquake is not yet clear. president biden saying this

weekend the u.s. is ready to provide any necessary assistance. we're hearing reports of entire families being killed. the priority for the authorities here right now is to get to the most isolated, affected areas near here up in the mountains where people could still be alive and trapped under the rubble. gio? >> gio: oh, that is just so tragic. tom soufi burridge there in morocco for us. tom, thank you. we turn now to hurricane lee maintaining its strength in the atlantic and likely to cause trouble on beaches all along the east coast this week with rip currents and rough surf possible. abc news meteorologist greg dutra from wls is on the beach there in far rockaway new york, with the forecast. good morning, greg. >> greg: good morning, whit, and check out this wild ride. from inside of a hurricane hunter, this going through lee, a c-130 going through and doing its reconnaissance runs, and what they have found is while lee has lost strength, it's still a really strong hurricane right now, and going to make its way off to the north.

so category 2 hurricane goes up to a category 3 and 4, and again, as it makes its way into cooler water and a little bit more wind shear, it does lose some strength, but i don't want you to think this won't be a strong storm. going up toward nova scotia, and it goes around the high-pressure system, and this is the big deal here, waves that are 15 to 25 feet close to the core as it makes its way to nova scotia, and along the jaliscos, 5 to 15, and that will create those dangerous rip currents starting today, a moderate risk there along the coast of florida and into georgia, and then all the way up through maine from bar harbor to miami. that is a big stretch of coastline, whit. >> whit: all right, greg. thanks so much. now back to the u.s. open, and the stunning finish. american coco gauff making history. the first teenager and youngest american to win the u.s. open in nearly a quarter century, taking home the title in a thrilling three-set match. >> ladies and gentlemen, your 2023 u.s. open women's singles

champion, coco gauff. >> reporter: making history at just 19 years old, american coco gauff is now the women's singles champion at the u.s. open. >> nice. >> reporter: gauff fighting hard for her first grand slam win against the incoming number one female player in the world, aryna sabalenka. >> sabalenka has had a very good start, and coco's just got to weather this storm a little bit. >> reporter: in the first set, gauff struggling with her forehand while sabalenka came out swinging, besting gauff, 6-2, but gauff came roaring back in the second set, crossing the court to slam down this backhand winner, but sabalenka wasn't going down easy. the belarusian keeping gauff on the move. >> oh, my goodness. perfectly played. >> reporter: still as the match progressed, gauff got better and better, winning the second set.

gauff seizing the momentum, taking a lead in the final set. >> coco for the championship and the title. >> reporter: in the end, gauff serving for the championship, and then that special moment, winning her first major title, gauff collapsing onto the court in tears. the crowd's cheers deafening. the youngest american to take the title since serena williams in 1999. gauff hiking up into the stands to hug her father and mother, overwhelmed with emotion. >> you did it! >> you believed in me from the beginning. i have been coming to this tournament. my dad took me to this tournament, sitting right there watching venus and serena compete, so it's really incredible to be on this stage. >> reporter: and here she is all those years ago, just 8 years old, dancing in the stands at the u.s. open.

we caught up with coco after the match where she thought back to what she'd tell that little girl. >> so ten years later, carrying this is crazy, and i think the biggest thing i would tell her is, keep dreaming, and keep believing because they're very possible, and they're very within reach, closer within reach than you believe. >> whit: and she's already becoming such an incredible ambassador for the sport. after the match, coco told us that she would celebrate overnight with her family by going to a sports bar, finally sitting down, and eating a burger. the sweet taste of victory, you could say. we'll have much more from the u.s. open coming up right here, and also you could see novak djokovic take on daniil medvedev in the men's singles final at 4:00 p.m. eastern on espn. for now, stephanie, back to you. >> stephanie: thanks so much, whit. what an incredible game. thank you. to president biden now arriving in vietnam overnight for talks there following the g20 summit in india. abc news senior white house correspondent selina wang is in hanoi with the president.

good morning, selina. >> reporter: good morning, stephanie. president joe biden's visit to vietnam is a big deal. the u.s. and vietnam are former wartime enemies that only established diplomatic relations in 1995, and now vietnam is elevating the united states to the highest diplomatic status that is only given to a small handful of countries. they're announcing new partnerships in education, technology, and business, and the driving force behind all of this, stephanie, is china. vietnam and china share a border, but they have a tense relationship because of longstanding territorial disputes in the south china sea, but the u.s. and vietnam relationship is also a delicate and tricky balance because vietnam has for years had close relationships with both china and russia, but this is a really important meeting because vietnam is also a one-party communist state, and this is a difficult relationship to build. president biden, however, has been criticized by human rights advocates for being willing to grow closer to a regime that is continuing to crack down on

dissent in civil society. during this trip to asia president biden has shown that he's willing to grow closer to autocratic leaders. when i pressed a senior white house official about whether biden is compromising on his ideals, he said that biden will be bringing up human rights during these meetings in vietnam, stephanie. >> stephanie: selina, thank you so much. looking forward to those details from those meetings. now to the race for the white house. all eyes are on iowa this weekend as the leading gop rivals make their case to voters in the hawkeye state. abc's senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is in des moines with the latest. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: hey, stephanie, good morning to you. well, the big iowa college football rivalry game the latest battleground in this republican primary. former president donald trump has visited this state far less than his rivals, but his commanding lead was on full display at that game. the former president bouncing from one tailgate to another, flipping burgers at a frat house, tossing out footballs and then being swarmed by supporters as he made his way into that game.

this is a race that has been dominated by donald trump and his legal troubles, but the former president did not want to talk much about any of that. i asked him if he's concerned that his former chief of staff, mark meadows, would flip against him after meadows lost that bid to move his case in georgia to federal court. trump brushing it all off telling me he is ahead by a very large margin, and, he is. four months to go until the iowa caucuses, and his rivals are still struggling to catch up to him. just a few feet away from trump was his next closest rival, florida governor ron desantis, he was making his own pitch to voters, telling us that he believes voters in this state want someone that can deliver on the issues and that isn't focused on all of the drama, but, again, four months till the iowa caucuses, trump's lead not only holding firm, but growing. >> stephanie: many voters just dismissing the indictments. thank you so much. tune into "this week" later on this morning. jonathan karl talks to secretary of state antony blinken about the g20 summit and the powerful earthquake in morocco.

plus, he'll speak with biden ally, senator chris coons, and new hampshire's republican governor, chris sununu, about the state of the 2024 presidential race. gio? >> gio: all right, stephanie. and now to that urgent manhunt for the escaped convicted killer in pennsylvania. the search area growing overnight. morgan norwood joins us now for more from phoenixville, pennsylvania. good morning to you, morgan. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, gio. danelo cavalcante managing to slip through that massive police presence over in longwood gardens. overnight, spotted here in phoenixville, pennsylvania, more than 25 miles away. officials also say that he has a new look. he's changed his appearance overnight. take a look at these new images from a ring camera in this area overnight showing him clean-shaven wearing a hoodie and those prison pants with a ball cap. police say somehow he managed to get ahold of a white vehicle. they're not sure of the model, which could further complicate the search, but making that dash for phoenixville just hours ago after surrounding longwood

gardens for ten days where he was spotted at least a dozen times. it's been more than a week since the 34-year-old convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend made that daring escape from the chester county prison by scaling up the prison yard walls, and, of course, with cavalcante on the move, officials continue to stress that he is extremely dangerous, urging residents in this area not to approach, instead to call the tip line or call 911. back to you. >> gio: all right, morgan. thank you. just incredible he's changed his appearance. all right. thank you. now to that looming strike against the big three automakers. 150,000 autoworkers prepared to walk off the job this week. maryalice parks has been speaking with some of them about why they're ready for that drastic step. >> reporter: the united autoworkers union and its 150,000 members still threatening to strike if the so-called big three car manufacturers do not meet demands for significant raises. >> it's not that we're looking to strike. it's just that we're looking for a fair contract. >> reporter: a mother of two, she hopes to buy a house. >> there's no house that would

fit me and my two children that is affordable right now with the wages that i make. >> reporter: the uaw is demanding help with inflation costs, guarantees for future union jobs, and a 40% raise increase for most workers over four years. it's the latest in a growing trend of unions flexing their muscle and demanding double-digit raises for workers. this last year, u.p.s., part-time workers, american, and delta airline workers, and west coast dockworkers have all demanded and secured raises over 30%. marcy pedraza, an electrician of almost 11 years, is a single mom. >> if the members' demands are met, it would make a huge impact on quality of life for all working families. >> reporter: friday stellantis offered over 14% raises telling employees, the offer, quote, protects the company's future ability to continue to compete globally in an industry that is rapidly transitioning to electric vehicles. in a recent statement after

making their latest public offer, general motors says their goal remains the same, to achieve an agreement without a disruption. both ford and stellantis have talked about the pressures of a changing industry. ford saying they're committed to looking for creative solutions to reach a deal. it's hard to gauge any potential economic impact right now. it would depend on whether the strike is against one or all three of these car manufacturers. the white house trying to stay optimistic. we are told the president is closely monitoring the situation. stephanie? >> stephanie: hopefully they can all come to an agreement this week. thank you so much, maryalice parks, in washington for us. now to that mass shooting just across the u.s./mexico border. seven people including at least one u.s. citizen rushed across the border checkpoint in roma, texas, for emergency treatment. jaclyn lee is in dallas. she has the latest. good morning, jaclyn. >> reporter: hey, stephanie, good morning. a handful of people are recovering after a very scary attack.

at least 20 people were traveling in a caravan in the early hours of saturday morning. it included u.s. citizens, lawful permanent u.s. residents and mexican citizens. they were traveling from the u.s. when they were attacked by armed civilians in miguel aleman in mexico. three people were injured by gunshots, and six people suffered panic attacks. those that were injured arrived in mexican ambulances at the port of entry in roma, texas, around 5:30 in the morning saturday. they were processed by customs and border protections officers. now, for context, the truck used in that attack is often used by cartels in the area in the surrounding cities and are dealing with a wave of violence as criminal organizations continue to operate. as it relates to this case, u.s. officials are deferring all questions to mexican authorities. gio? >> gio: all right, jaclyn. thank you so much there in texas.

>> reporter: good morning, stephanie. don't get used to these stable gas prices. that's the message this morning. that's from oil experts. drivers have been enjoying slightly lower prices at the moment despite a recent uptick in the price of gasoline's main ingredient, crude oil. aaa says the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.82, about the same as a month ago, but 2 cents away from a year ago. we are a week away from switching to the cheaper blend of gas. experts warn that there are several factors that could send prices higher. drivers in the midwest are already feeling the pain. in minnesota gas shot up 40 cents a gallon overnight and the gas app gas buddy predicts prices could climb even higher. we're in the middle of hurricane season, which could threaten gulf coast oil infrastructure, and last week, the biden administration banned oil drilling on millions of acres in alaska. now, saudi arabia and russia also extended their oil production cuts until the end of

mapping the vast morca cave when he became suddenly ill, suffering gastrointestinal bleeding. the rescue operation under way as dickey has begun his ascent from 3,000 feet below the surface inside that turkish cave. turkish rescuers now using explosives to blast open passages of the cave to safely rescue dickey. officials saying he's being pulled up on a stretcher with a doctor and three to four others to assist every step of the way. >> by now they've encountered vertical pitches. >> reporter: dickey appearing to be in good spirits, sharing a laugh as he waits to be rescued. officials say they have split the cave extraction into seven sections based on depth with one rescue team responsible for each layer. on saturday, the initial operation began to move dickey about 1,000 feet. >> if you take their goal for today and take how far he is, it would be five days. i suspect it's going to take longer. >> reporter: dozens of special rescuers from across europe racing to help, providing dickey with life-saving care.

back on the field after that frightening health scare. >> well, i think everyone witnessed something that you don't want to witness in an athletic event, especially in a football game. i think america along with the buffalo bills were playing for hamlin. you can't say enough about the first responders, how they got to the scene, and obviously when he went back to play his first game, we all i think as americans and in football fans smiled. we were all smiling, the fact that he was back playing again. that was a good sight to see. >> gio: yeah, absolutely, and quarterback aaron rodgers has moved from green bay to wearing jets green. so, what do you make of the move? how will he do? >> well, i tell folks all the time, you know, when he decided to leave green bay, there was a couple of places that obviously he could have went. he chose the jets for a reason. outstanding defense, and has some really good players on offense. he brings two of his receivers
