cooled it down. the spaghetti models take it between that high pressure system and a trough. it's going to depend on how slow it moves and how quickly it gets up there. what i can promise you, george. starting sunday, big rip currents, high surf all along the east coast. >> it is coming. thanks very much. let's get to rob marciano. let's get more on the thunderstorms and the heat in the northeast. >> reporter: good morning, george. our extraordinary september heat wave continues with not just heat, but oppressive humidity, making it difficult for everyone especially kids who are still in school without air conditioning. there is a cool front, but it is crawling and causing problems popping up storms from the south all the way into the northeast. overnight severe storms slamming the northeast. forks of lightning illuminating the pennsylvania sky. nearly 300 damaging storm reports. heavy rain and hail pounding potomac maryland, just north of d.c. the storms fuelled by that late season heat wave.

newark, hartford and new york city all setting records again. and parts of the south seemingly unable to shake the record setting heat since the beginning of summer. san antonio marking the 71st day of 100 degree plus temperatures, an all time record for the area. phoenix kicking off 52 days this year with temperatures of 110 degrees or higher. the current 53 day record likely to be broken this weekend. the triple digit temps up ending daily life for many americans. many schools sending kids home early. or canceling classes altogether. despite the mayor declaring a heat emergency boston public schools are back in session. >> i wish today they don't have to come to school because it's going to be so humid in there. >> reporter: over a dozen area schools have no air conditioning. and the governor report out that says 41% of public schools don't have proper ac. adequate cooling or ventilation.

my kids don't have it. they're going to be happy when this school week, at least, is over. let's talk about the storms coming through, hopefully breaking some of this heat. we're gonna stretch them into the northeast and into new england. so connecticut up through maine. we had a lot of damaging storms yesterday. stretching down into texas, dallas, shreveport getting into lake charles as well. this front kind of washes out so it will break the heat but the humidity, unfortunately, will stick around through the weekend. >> can't have it all, rob. thank you, my friend. going to turn to a new sighting of the dangerous killer on the loose in pennsylvania. the escaped convict is still managing to escape authorities with the search in its second week. trevor ault is in westchester, pennsylvania, with the latest. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. last night we saw yet another swarm of police activity and even an apparent shelter in place order after this convicted murderer was spotted yet again not too far from here in a place where he's been spotted before. but somehow he continues to slip through the grasp of this massive law enforcement effort.

overnight escaped killer danilo cavalcante evading capture after a confirmed sighing only miles from the prison he fed. late thursday at the longwood garden, pair of text messages going out to residents and staff. one saying please shelter in place at this time. the subject has been spotted in our area. then half hour later longwood gardens is being evacuated. it was the ninth confirmed sighing since cavalcante's escape last thursday. this remarkable video showing his crab walk up the wall from the chester county prison exercise yard. his latest location shows he back tracked in recent days having previously been seen monday night from these trail cameras not far away in longwood gardens. >> that's what the whole territory is, like this. >> reporter: connie lives in the same area cavalcante was spotted tuesday. she says she pointed police to possible trails he could have

used. are you surprised that it's taking this long? >> yes, very. >> reporter: yeah. >> i mean, even with the fbi and the swat team. i just don't get it. i just don't get it. >> reporter: cavalcante was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, and her family, who lives in the area, now has a 24-hour police detail. authorities saying they're too terrified to leave the house. >> he's already murdered two people, one in brazil and one here in a very brutal manner. he's a very dangerous individual and he remains so. >> reporter: the search perimeter has shifted back to what's centered on longwood gardens which says it's going to remain closed until further notice. >> we know you'll keep tracking it. trevor, thank you. overseas to the g-20 summit. president biden is set to touchdown in new dehli, india. high on the president's agenda is the goal of countering china's rise around the world and strengthening support for ukraine. senior white house correspondent

selina wang is in new dehli with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. in just a few hours president biden will be touching down here in new dehli, india, where the world's most important leaders are gathering. president biden has an ambitious goal. to cement america's influence here in asia and also counter china's rise around the world. another key priority is shoring up global support for ukraine. back at home, biden has requested for additional aid to ukraine, but he's facing opposition from house republicans. but this morning treasury secretary yellen thinks she's confidence they will begin congressional support and telling me in a sitdown interview that russia is still suffering from western sanctions. meanwhile, russia's president putin and china's leader xi expected to skip the event sending a powerful message to the world. after this weekend in india, president biden is headed to vietnam for yet another high stakes meeting. the u.s. and vietnam are former enemies and foes, but now they're expected to significantly upgrade that relationship. george?

>> okay, thanks very much. in the courts a guilty verdict against a former top adviser to donald trump. peter navarro is convicted of contempt of congress for refusing to cooperate with the january 6th committee. he is convicted of contempt of congress. he's now the second trump adviser to be convicted on that charge following steve bannon. pierre thomas has the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. peter navarro faces up to two years in prison and fines up to $200,000 when sentenced in january. he's being punished for defying the house committee that was investigating the january 6th attack. the committee subpoenaed navarro for testimony and to put it simply, he refused to cooperate, citing executive privilege. the judge ruled navarro produced no evidence that trump actually invoked privilege on his behalf. the jury clearly did not buy the defense, convicting him of contempt of congress after only about four hours of deliberations. navarro says he will appeal, michael? >> thank you, pierre. going to turn to the latest on the looming autoworker strike. the union responding to gm's counter proposal.

it was not the response the auto giant was hoping for. elizabeth schulze joins us with details. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it was not. a possible strike is now less than a week away. there is still no deal in sight between the united autoworkers union and the big three automakers. gm yesterday offering a 10% pay hike to its workers, calling it the biggest raise since 1999. but it is still far from the 40% increase the uaw members are demanding over four years along with better benefits and more paid time off. the union's president saying gm has come to the table with an insulting proposal. gm either doesn't care or season listening when we say we need economic justice by 11:59 p.m. on september 14th. now, at that time, if there's no agreement and the union's 146,000 factory workers go on strike, gm, ford and jeep maker cilantis could be forced to slow down or stop production altogether.

if the strike goes on, that could mean fewer cars at dealers and higher prices for consumers. rebecca? >> big ripple effect on the economy and consumers. thank you very much. we turn now to the race against time in turkey. a massive international effort is under way to rescue an american researcher who fell ill and is now trapped in one of the deepest caves in the region. marcus moore joins us with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. this is a complex rescue operation one of astonishing depth. we're talking thousands of feet. if you can imagine the height of the empire state building times two. we're hearing that this rescue could take four days to complete. this morning an international effort under way to rescue an american explorer trapped more than 3,000 feet deep in a turkish cave. crews going half a mile down to save 40-year-old mark dickey, a skilled new jersey caver on a mission to map the cave when he fell critically

ill, suffering from stomach bleeding, semiconscious for days. rescuers bringing blood and life saving medical supplies with them. dickey emotional, thanking them. >> the quick response of the turkish government to get the medical supplies that i needed in my opinion saved my life. >> reporter: the chief rescuer on a new jersey team, now being rescued himself by a team of more than 170 workers. >> this is very complex rescue operation. need constant medical care. >> reporter: the rescuers now preparing for the treacherous journey back. >> i'm up. i'm alert. i'm talking. i'm not healed on the inside yet so i'm going to need a lot of help to get outta here. >> reporter: according to the rescue organization dickey works with, demolition teams are working to enlarge the paths of the cave. rescuers are preparing a base camp about 2,000 feet in. fellow rescue expert karl hitemier describing the challenges ahead. >> it involves crawling through squeezes. it's muddy. it's wet. it's cold. everything is hard rock.

>> reporter: george, we're hearing one of the things dickey's family is thankful for. the fact that his fiancee has been by his side in this cave. many people might wonder why they do the work they do. they are explorers and have a passion for learning and mapping these caves. george? >> marcus moore, thanks. we're going to turn to the one chip challenge. the company behind the extremely spicy chip is pulling it from stores after the family of a teen says he died after eating one. stephanie ramos has the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this story is so sad. a teen, just 14, from massachusetts, died after eating that chip. it's not known if the chip itself caused the death of the teen. the family says he did get sick after eating the chip and died hours later after participating in the one chip challenge. now, the single chip came in a coffin shaped box and was made with two of the hottest spices in the world. the company behind the chip encouraged people to eat it and post reactions on social media.

now the company is voluntarily pulling the chips off the market saying in a statement that, while there is a warning, the challenge is meant for healthy adults. we have seen an increase in teens and other individuals not heeding these warnings. as a result, we are actively working with our retailers to remove the product from shelves. now, medical experts suggest parents warn their children not to participate in the viral challenge, as other states across the country have seen hospitalizations due to the chip challenge. guys? >> tragic for that family. thank you very much, stephanie. back now with a thrilling night at the u.s. open for the women's semifinals features some powerful performances on the court. a big delay for one match. and american coco gauff punching her ticket to the final. will reeve is at the tennis center with more for us. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. we were so close to an all-american women's final, but if we know anything about the u.s. open, it's that it's full of unpredictable drama on the

prison until he's 77. that's when he next qualifies for parole. this morning we're learning more about the major celebrities who wrote letters of support but did not appear to sway the judge. this morning a judge sentenced danny masterson, star of "that '70s show" to 30 years to life behind bars, the maximum penalty after a jury found the 47-year-old guilty of raping two women. what's your reaction to sentencing? >> pleased. it was the right decision to make. i know the victims have been waiting a long time. >> reporter: the victims claim the actor abused them in separate incidents between 2001 and 2003 while he was starring on the hit sitcom. >> the teachers like him. counselors like him. everybody likes him. i hate him. [ laughter ] >> reporter: at the time they were practicing members of the church of scientology, the women initially hesitant fearing backlash from the church. the church says it has no policy

prohibiting anyone from making reports to law enforcement and demands all of its members follow the law. but in the packed courtroom, both of them speaking directly to their attacker. one saying when you raped me, you stole from me. that's what rape is. a theft of the spirit. the other sharing, i knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came in contact with. i am so sorry and i'm so upset. i wish i'd reported him sooner to the police. more than 50 people writing letters in support for masterson, including some of his co-stars. ashton kutcher calling him a role model and mila kuniz vouching for what she said his exceptional character. masterson's wife also always by his side during this entire trial. his legal team now vowing to appeal. >> we have great respect for the jury and for our system of justice, sometimes they get it wrong. and that's what happened here. >> reporter: and a judge firmly

disagrees with that sentiment. moments before she handed the maximum sentence, she told him, you are not the victim here. your actions were criminal. guys? >> thank you. we turn now to the parenting influencer charged with child abuse. ruby franke is set to appear in court today. we're now hearing the 911 call that led to her arrest. kayna whitworth has the story. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: it was a call one officer said gave him the goose bumps. they sounded the alarm about a problem in that home last year after several concerning phone calls were made to the department of children and family services. >> 911. the address of your emergency? >> reporter: this morning abc news obtaining the dramatic 9d 11 call that led to the arrest of you tube influencer ruby franke on child abuse charges. >> tell me what's happened. >> i just had a 12-year-old boy show up here at my front door asking for help.

he said he had just came from a neighbor's house and he's emaciated. he's got tape around his legs. he's hungry and he's thirsty. >> reporter: a neighbor alerting authorities when police say ruby's 12-year-old son showed up at their front door pleading for help. the boy's condition, bringing the neighbor to tears. >> he has duct tape around each ankle. yeah. there's sores around them. he has them around his wrists as well. this boy has been -- this kid has obviously been -- i think he's been, he's been detained. he's obviously covered in wounds. >> reporter: dispatchers sending authorities to the utah home of franke's business partner jody hildebrand, also arrested last week there. authorities say they found franke's 10-year-old daughter

we've got a long time. that's by next weekend. so we'll keep updating you. we still have heat advisories from here to boston. it will be humid for one more day. then we'll start to break it apart. hot today in texas. they'll break apart in the east. very hot weekend there with excessive heat warnings in phoenix. rebecca? >> ginger, thank you. we now turn to a warning about the high temperatures for expectant mothers. a new study finds excessive heat exposure during pregnancy could be linked with severe maternal complications. dr. jennifer ashton is here with details. great to see you, dr. jen. you really don't think about this until it happens to you. i had a scare like this a few years ago in a pregnancy. break down the study for us. >> so this is really interesting. you're looking at the area with obstetrics and environmental health, the climate, actually overlap. this study done in california used zip codes, then compared them to delivery records in the hospital. and found that there was an increase risk of complications like sepsis, hemorrhage, clotting disorders that went up

27% when women were exposed to prolonged high temperatures, particularly in the end of their pregnancy. we're talking about 95 degrees and higher for three days or more. so again, time to connect those dots, as ginger and i always say, between what's going on in our climate and environment and our medical health. >> i was towards the end of my second trimester so that makes sense. what are some signs for that heat exhaustion? >> we have to remember this is a spectrum of severity. you start with heat exhaustion, which is kind of the more moderate kind, midway in terms of the effects. heavy sweating. cold, clammy skin. you can have nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fainting. tiredness, weakness. if not treated it can progress to heat stroke. that is the more severe. you're talking about high core temperatures 103 degrees or higher. hot red or dry skin. that's the key. your body loses its ability to sweat. nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness or change in mental status. that is a true medical

killing three of them. this morning we are hearing from the friend of the fourth woman. deborah roberts here with the story. good morning, deborah. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a story that captivated the country. young women going missing turning up dead along a lonely stretch of beach along new york's long island. well now we are speaking with the woman who was the last to see one of those victims alive and who shares a chilling conversation she had with the suspect. >> every time i talk about it -- >> reporter: the women in the case weren't just escorts, as they were labeled at the time. they were also mothers, daughters, each had their own story. maureen barnes was the first of the gilgo four to go missing. maureen barnes was 25 years old when she disappeared july 9, 2007.

becky worley, who grew up on maui, kicks it off with a school where kids are starting to get back into a routine. good morning, becky. >> reporter: michael, good morning. it's just unbelievable. 808, august 8. but 808 is also our area code here. it's really a marker in time, the before and after these awful fires. but today we're here at maui prep school looking at how families are trying to get back to sense some of normalcy. the focus is on the children of lahaina. if tragedy hadn't struck maui, the first days of school in lahaina would have started like any other. now, gray hazmat zone filled with ashes. amongst this community processing the disaster, lahaina's youngest residents. >> the firefighters worked hard and finally put out the fire. >> reporter: homes destroyed, family members missing, classmates among the deceased.

and they're dealing with all that while navigating a complete decimation of their daily routine. >> i just got out of kindergarten and didn't get a chance to go to first grade. >> reporter: all four of the public schools in lahaina closed. miles' school destroyed. the hawaii department of education saying they will try to open three of the schools by mid october pending environmental tests. one private school in lahaina trying to pivot now. sacred hearts. ♪ this is a place i know well or i did before two of its three buildings were destroyed by the fire. second grade was sister mary victor. i started my first communion class here. but now i can see the people of the church, but all around it where there used to be buildings and the school and the families that lived in the neighborhood around, it's just all burned out buildings. just gone. >> they have seen their homes burned down.

their friends have moved away. life has changed instantly for these children overnight. >> reporter: sacred heart's principal and her staff creating a make shift school in the church just north of lahaina. >> they are the future. our hope for rebuilding and healing. this is the best we could do for now until we secure a new school here. >> reporter: and because children often process trauma and grief in nonverbal ways, teachers are promoting healing through art, through new toys and laughter. kids so resilient and the hope of this island. sacred hearts is rebuilding. it was incredible to see those kids just trying to get things back together. the school is fund-raising on their website. i mean, it's just nuts. in the midst of all this devastation, they have their school uniforms on and kids are restarting sports. they really are the hope and the resilience of this island.

it will be great to see. also in pop news this morning we talked about this earlier. i heard you talking about it. made me laugh in the dressing room. the beyonce fan who is crazy in love with her new baby after going in labor at the concert and staying for the whole show because why wouldn't you? sara francis jones had a c section scheduled for next week. so she decided it would be a safe bet to see the show monday night in l.a. but apparently her baby wanted to see the show, too. sara starred to have contractions during the concert. she didn't think they were the real thing so she ignored them. she was not about to miss a single song from her favorite artist. when the show ended and she still felt the contractions she thought, maybe it wasn't the excitement of the show. she an her partner went to the hospital, yes, where she delivered a happy and healthy baby girl named nola. i thought her name would be something different.

>> and ginger. >> you don't miss a africa. >> then we have some spices. coriander, star anise and black pepper. >> it does help to have is a processor. what is that? >> ginger juice. little spice, little acid. jalapeno. this is spicy. and shallot. >> which i love. you like that? >> i love the peanut gallery. here, this is the marinade. we blitz it. the chicken is marinated for 24 hours. we're gonna drop it in. >> that's key. i always wonder can you overmarinate? >> you can. it's like a ceviche. this will eventually cook it. >> oh. >> so when you first started testing it, two hours rubbery. one day perfect. >> how do you get it so crispy? >> the technique, frying is the business. it's fried at two different temperatures. we fry it at a lower temperature. we take it out, rest it and an hour later we fry it again.
