day brings the u.s. open. hope you guys are having a good start to your holiday. >> rebecca: it is a labor of love here at gma and it has been a weekend of wild weather from coast to coast. you are looking at new york's rockaway beach tropical storms bringing dangerous rip currents to the east coast as many people head to the water today. this as millions across the country face that extreme heat. we will have the forecast. >> michael: but we will begin with the scene at burning man. tens of thousands of people trapped at the event in nevada over the weekend told to shelter in place. monsoon rains flooding the roads and blocking the access. chief national correspondent matt gutman is in wadsworth nevada with the latest. good morning matt. >> reporter: good morning michael. not only were they told to shelter in place, they were told to conserve food water and fuel. typically ahead of burning man the concern is for excessive heat or sand storms. this time it was thunderstorms and the situation got so muddy and possibly so dire that the white house said it had to brief president biden about it.

this morning, thousands still stranded in this remote stretch of desert at burning man, the annual gatherings in the black rock desert of nevada after a storm turned the festival into a mud bath. >> we have thousands of people trying to leave right now. >> reporter: on friday parts of the desert got 2-3 months worth of rain in a matter of hours. >> many hours of rain. >> reporter: shutting down the road in and out, festival goers told to shelter in place after major flooding shut off the main gate way for vehicles and emergency crewsment one person reported to have died. the shoves investigating the death saying it occurred during this rain event adding the family has been notified. authorities now investigating. people stuck in the deep clay, the founder of bulletproof, dave asprey seen duct taping his friends's shoes. >> looks like there may be rain coming. >> taking this video of yet another storm rolling in. portable toilets out of service,

journey before hitching a ride with a fan. with temperatures warming today, the weather hopefully drying out. in the meantime organizers also urging burners to share with fellow neighbors if they have enough. >> people are taking care of each other. we have food, we have provisions. we have shelter. so it's really just kind of a group effort to get through this until the roads dry up. >> reporter: organizers say take they hope to be able to burn that sculpture of a man which is where burning man gets its name. it is a been postponed two nights in a row because of weather. they also say they hope this road opens up and they're able to allow people to leave. now in a typical year traffic here can be terrible, 12 hours long, but now there are concerns that it will be catastrophic. still, the weather seems to be holding, so folks are hoping they can get out of there as soon as possible. michael? >> michael: matt, all right. thank you so much for that. >> now we're going to go to meteorologist leslie lopez from our los angeles station kabc

will join us now with the latest on the conditions now as well as the soaring temperatures for millions of americans. good morning lesley >> leslie: good morning. quite the labor day. let's talk about it. we are looking at, yes, drying taking place in some of our desert areas, it has been chilly overnight. so if you think about all the there, cold weather. if you know anybody, the good news is things are drying out. so finally going to see some drier and warmer weather through the desert communities and most of the rain is going to be moving out towards the east. then we talk about the heat on this holiday. the heat is happening all across most of the center of the country to the northeast, and we are looking at some record breaking heat. washington dulles broke a record, 99 degrees, duluth minnesota also broke an all-time record and then as we get back into some of the record highs we're expecting today, we look at abliene san antonio looks like detroit and washington, dc back to you. >> george: travel home from the holiday weekend, millions will be flying, victor oquendo is tracking the it all from lax. good morning victor. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. as we wrap up this

record-setting summer travel season, another major test for airlines this labor day with millions of americans set to take to the skies. this morning, labor day travel in full swing. airports from coast to coast bracing for another crush of passengers monday. one of the busiest days to fly over the holiday weekend. new york, miami, atlanta and los angeles jam packed. the tsa saying they expect an 11% increase in passengers this weekend compared to last year, adding this summer has been the busiest on record. >> we were already ahead of 2019, last year's volumes which was out aides of 2019 volumes and this year will be record breaking as well. >> over the holiday period the tsa anticipates screening some 14 million people leading to longer lines at security. and for the millions more hitting the roads triple a forecasts plenty of traffic nationwide today. saying the worst times to drive almost all day long from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the best time to avoid gridlock, after 7:00 p.m.

and the national average for a gallon of gas $3.81 up slightly higher than last year. bottom line if you're flying or driving today, make sure to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time. rebecca? >> rebecca: oh, yes, exactly wa we intend to do and never quite squat on in my family, victor. thank you so much. we turn now to the dangerous rip currents, rough waters up and down the east coast with multiple rescues and one death erielle reshef joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning rebe rebecca the national weather service has been warning the rip currents could turn deadly over this holiday weekend as several tropical systems churn off the coast of the atlantic and sadly that is what happened off of the jersey shore this weekend, a 24-year-old man died after he was swept out by a rip current, several other swimmers trying to form a human chain to save him. and in another part of the coast, half a dozen swimmers had to be rescued. three of them taken to area hospitals. officials are warning that these

rip current threats will continue as we reach the peak of hurricane season. michael? >> michael: all right erielle thank you for that. definitely be safe out there. turning now to the search for an escaped murderer on the loose since breaking out of prison late last week. jay o'brien joins us now with the latest on the search. good morning jay. >> reporter: michael good morning. this man hunt now stretching into its fifth day putting people in that area on edge. one homeowner even telling abc news it feels like it is a surreal, like he's in a movie. this morning, pennsylvania officials concentrating their man hunt for convicted murderer danelo cavalcante to a few miles from the prison he escaped five days ago. this black and white surveillance video taken around 2:00 a.m. saturday and released by the chester county district attorney's office shows what officials say is cavalcante outside a home not far from the county prison. local, state and federal law enforcement now asking for the public's help in tracking down the 34-year-old, who escaped

before being transferred to a state corrections facility to serve a life sentence for stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in front of her children. >> every tip is important and we're following up on every single tip that comes in. >> reporter: locals in this rural area describing tactical teams walking through back yards. >> look out the kitchen window. >> i'm out putting together a soccer goal for my daughter and a state trooper that has a machine on-like i guess the tactical gear on with a machine gun walks through my front yard. >> reporter: police believe cavalcante who's also wanted for murder in his native brazil may have already tried to bra i can into at least two homes in the search area. >> possible sighting of the prisoner, a male subject walking northbound. >> reporter: warning locals to be on the lookout this holiday weekend. >> people may be out of town. it's very likely that the suspect could attempt to break into one of those homes. >> reporter: residents urge to call 911 if they see cavalcante, but not to approach him. he's considered extremely

>> reporter: earlier this summer, aerial images like these showings sharks just two miles off the shoreline prompting them to close the beaches to swimmers. >> here at jones beach we probably closed half a dozen times this summer. being able to put the drone up in the air within a matter of minutes is a game changer. >> reporter: and surveillance isn't just happening from the air. these life guards are also monitoring by jet ski. >> that gives us a different and additional, you know, vantage point to be able to see what's geeing on in the water. >> reporter: recent videos here in new york of shark swing alarmingly close to humans has gone viral. experts say bait switch move closer to the shore as the waters off the atlantic coast have gotten cleaner and clearer in recent years. so far the stratte jib seems to be working. no shark encounters or shark attacks have been reported at jones beach this summer. but that's not the case for several others nearby.

in july, a long island teen was bitten while surfing near fire island and just last month, a 65-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition after being bitten by a shark in the back of her leg at new york city's rockaway beach, the first one in the area in decades. officials say they can use all the help they can get to help us safely share the beach. >> sharks are supposed to be in the ocean, and, let's also remind ourselves that we do share the water with these amazing, beautiful creatures. >> reporter: and life guards at jones beach tell us that if they spot a shark within 300 yards of the shoreline, which is the equivalent of about three football fields, they will shut down the beach to swimmers. they know swimmers aren't usually out that far but they're not taking any chances. and while the regular layings are different at different beaches, life guards tell us it is vital that people heed the warnings they hear from life guards. guys? >> michael: better to be safe than sorry right?

dr. e death sanchez from presbyterian hospital and dietitian and nutritionist maya feller. >> michael: welcome you three thank you very much for this. because these parents that send their kids back to school knees need a lot of advice as much as they can get. i want to start with you, when they get this they hit the ground running with education. what can parents do to help facilitate their kids' learning. >> one of the things we're seeing in the helped lines is a real drop in reading scores. that's a by-product of covid, the way we teach readings, phonics versus other styles, reading wars. we don't need to get into that. what parents need to know if you think your child is struggling with reading, be proactive. get involved early talk to your teacher and figure out what the problem actually is. in order to do that you may need some outside help. one suggestion for parents is just to really push any and all books. i used to go to the library and get a stack. doesn't matter what you want them to read, it's what they

want to read so doesn't matter if it's a graphic novel, can book or dr. underpants. that got my kid. >> michael: reading is reading. >> reeked is reading. >> michael: any tech that can help. >> let's move to middle school because so much learning is done on laptops or chrome books. you may realize from last year the chrome book doesn't work, that's what happened in our house or maybe you just need one. you don't have to buy new. you can buy one refurbished often it's cosmetic with the box or device, or secondhand, a site i like called blackmarket.com. i found one refurbished for nib originally priced 249. they beat it to debt anyway so you might as well get secondhand. last thing for teens in high school, if you do one thing to help them establish a routine to get that phone out of their room every night at bedtime and, if possible, ought mate it by using

the screen time controls so it automatically turns off. ours go off at 9:30 and that's a -- mom! nope. >> rebecca: the sound track picks up again. george just sent their daughters off to college, my daughter's 4.5, we spent all last year dealing with sickness colds coughs everything how do you keep your child health. >> right i have a two year old in day care the issue is close to my heart. first you want to do good amount of sleep good nutrition, those things are always so important. people forget. so you want to start the night before. kids of school age need to get at least ten hours of sleep. that definitely happens if you set an early bedtime, a healthy routine. electronics out of the room. remember, phones are a privilege, they are not a right. if you want to make sure that you're getting good nutrition, as i said and you're up to date with your medical care, right? so prescriptions, all the forms that nurses at schools need to

give those prescriptions, parents often forget and glasses and dentists you don't want to forget. >> rebecca: can you walk us through that privilege versus right? >> right? i know. just saying that. [laughter]. >> so every time teens see me in my practice i always say that in front of the teen and in front of the parents. because i say to the parents please make sure the phone is with you by 8:00 or 9:00. and the teen is like what? you guys remember, that is a privilege not a right. >> rebecca: you're a good doctor. i would like to visit you some day. >> anytime rebecca. >> george: more about nutrition you have some models of healthy meals here. >> yes. so one of the things i like to remind folks is that adults and care givers are the ones who decide what, where, and when and the kids decide if and how much. so when we're thinking about packing lunches, i love to say the most nutritious lunch that your child will eat is the one that you should pack.

if the kid is in a lunch room situation, i know there's so much excitement there, that's the time of day when they have all this autonomy. that can be a conversation between the adult and the child about how to navigate that lunch room situation. what is your plan for eating and what's your plan for socializing. but, again, they're out of our eyesight so remember, the kid is going decide if and how much. that's hard for us to step back and say oh, my gosh they're not eating. they will eventually deep breaths for the parents out there. >> george: how about snacks. >> i think snacks are a great way to bridge the gap between meal times. i love to see nice sources of protein especially for plant and animals. for kids who eat meet meat sticks are wonderful i also love to see fruits and veggies lots of vitamins and minerals, things like cuties and halos super papable, berries nuts and seeds for kids with no intolerances. >> question from layla one of our writers about lunchtime. >> yes. >> my daughter just started

kindergarten and she's not eating all of her lunch. when i asked her why she said it's because she doesn't have enough time. how can i get her to eat more during her 20-minute lunch window? >> layla, that is a fantastic question. it's something that comes up in my practice all the time. what i like to remind parents is that this is an opportunity for continued conversation. talking to your kid about what they want in their lunch as well as what their plan is for navigating that situation. if your kid is like, i want a sandwich then pack the sandwich you know they will like. it's not a time for new introductions or things that are foreign. give them what they want to eat and if they don't eat it let them have it after school. >> michael: i like that. don't experiment on your kid. good time to do a book. so i can explain to people how i handled an addiction in the family, a death from the addiction in the family, and how, how we all got through it. >> george: what do you hope people will get out of that? >> well, i hope people will know they're not alone. i have seen and know about many parents who take on a -- just a huge guilt and shame when one of their children becomes addicted and has this problem, and dies from, this was fentanyl, and more and more this is happening. >> yes. >> and it's still, you know, even -- it can happen in any family. there is no -- but the guilt and the shame that so many take on, what can i do? did i do enough? did i do too much? what was -- should i have raised them different. all this stuff can really stop

your own life. and your loved one, i know beckett doesn't want me to stop my life. he doesn't want, you know -- when i talk about spirit, i believe in a non-physical and a physical. and i believe that there's a spirit that we all are, that we're all connected to. and i will see him again. and i believe that that beckett wants me to be happy. >> george: did writing about it help you? >> oh, absolutely. it's such a -- it always has, it's such a great healer. to get it out, to then move on from it, you know, not to just tell it over and over and over but to move on and say yes, this happened, i have learned so much. i learned how much i you know, learning that can be so exhilarating. wow, i loved that much that it hurt that much and i love being human. >> george: you're going to be our neighbor here on broadway,

together, whisk that together. >> okay. >> mix, mix, mix, mix. >> rebecca: you tell me what to do. >> flava philadelphia international airport, mix mix mix get in there. so we have that mixed up i ask you to power this on. you can use any cut of chicken i like the thigh i'm a thigh girl. you a breast girl. >> rebecca: it stays juicy. >> you know it. this is the chef's choice. we're going to marinate. sometimes i like to stick this in a plastic bag because then you can massage it in, give it a deep tissue shiatsu massage right? marinate this and then up to four hours up to overnight you want to get all that flavor in there. >> rebecca: what's the shortest amount of time if you think of it too late and then start. >> 20 minutes 15 minutes. >> rebecca: okay. >> this is so full of flavor you're going to get there it won't disappoint especially if you keep basting. now we put a little march tornado, just about a cup, reduce that down. okay? so that's going to be some extra sauce on the side. >> rebecca: glaze. >> glaze. you have to have something on the side right? >> rebecca: then bring it to our grill. >> bring it to the grill you want to throw those on.

>> rebecca: shire. >> i like boneless because it cooks faster, little oil on the grill but if you want it on the bone that's fine extra juice on the bone but we're always on a rush so a little bit of boneless. i like to keep the skin on too but if you don't like the skin that's fine, it adds a little bit of juiciness and of course we have corn. have to eat seasonally and local, jersey corn i had some yesterday. >> rebecca: your mom would be proud. >> this is her recipe definitely. so put some more glaze on top. >> so you do the glaze once it's cooked down you put the glaze on top. >> yes, base base base, you cannot put enough of it on, flip as you need to and then once the corn is grilled, we've got another umami packed butter so this is either with miso or tangup korean's version of mace 0 full of umami great rich complex ingredient and the moment i saw this i thought of my daughter because she loves a popsicle and these are adorable.
