what a weekend. 660 some severe storm reports in just the last 48 hours. each of those blue dots which is mostly damaging winds showcases that you have a wind of 60 plus miles per hour. imagine having more this month than we've ever seen when it comes to wind damage. and yet another day to go. this morning a bit of relief for millions of americans as severe storms helped bring an end to the first official heat wave of the season for parts of the northeast. a powerful line of storms swept through virginia, washington, d.c. and maryland saturday. gusts up to 84 miles per hour, knocking out power to more than 230,000 customers. streets littered with fallen trees. >> it was a lot of wind and rain just pounding for, i don't know, at least half hour straight, i would say. >> a tree in the nation's capital, shattering the windshield and crushing the roof of this car. and this soldier standing guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier through the storm at the arlington national cemetery never leaving his post.

police in that state investigating a possible storm related death of a 43-year-old man reportedly killed after a tree fell onto his home. another tree falling onto a house in easton, massachusetts the work of an ef-1 tornado. >> my wife was actually on the porch filming the rain. she turned her camera off. within 15 seconds that tree came down. >> and the extreme heat still scorching the south. more than 70 million americans under heat alert. ambulances rushing to back to school events in georgia, bringing ten people suffering heat related injuries to the er. fire personnel treating ten more on the scene. >> people started actually passing out and what have you. >> now the desert southwest, phoenix, el paso, getting a break. i put that in heavy air quotes. they're finally breaking the consecutive records of 110 plus and 100ly. austin should break a record of 100 plus degree days by this friday, having 28 in a row. that ridge just centers back over east texas and new orleans,

who's in an excessive heat warning, feeling like 109. you could see it feels like this week up to 115. it is not breaking for little rock either. michael? >> thank you so much for that, ginger. we're going to turn to former president trump potentially about to be indicted on a new case as we learn more about how he is paying for his defense. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is tracking it all from the federal courthouse in washington. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. the grand jury is expected to convene here again early this week as former president trump waits to find out if he's going to be indicted in a third case. this morning a decision whether to charge former president trump for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the january 6th attack at the capitol is inching closer. special counsel jack smith has already added charges to the indictment about trump's handling of classified documents, alleging he sought to have security camera footage destroyed, knowing the fbi wanted to see it.

campaigning under indictment, trump spent the weekend lashing out. >> these are ridiculous indictments. they want to damage the leading candidate, by the way leading by far, i have to say. >> reporter: while the criminal charges appear to be costing trump no political support, defending them is costing the political action committee trump uses to pay his legal bills. sources telling abc news a campaign filing coming today will show the running tab is already more than $40 million. and to cover similar bills now piling up for some ally, the sources say trump's team is creating a legal defense fund. trump's legal defense is his campaign case, and his rivals for the republican nomination in 2024 are still looking for an effective line of attack. >> i don't think that was a good use of the money. we need to be focusing on using our energy on resources on defeating biden and the democrats. >> we need a new leader. i think he was good then. i don't think he's going to be good moving forward.

>> reporter: and really nothing seems to be working. a new new york times poll out shows trump crushing his republican rivals. on the legal front the updated indictment in the classified documents case charge the property manager at trump's palm beach estate. today he's due in court, accused of helping trump obstruct the government's investigation. whit? >> we're going to talk more about that right now, aaron. as we await that possible new indictment, former president trump's property manager at mar-a-lago is set to appear in court to face charges in the secret documents case. victor oquendo is in miami with the latest on that part of the story. victor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the newest player in the alleged cover-up, carlos deoliviera, the property manager at mar-a-lago set to appear here in miami. the details are stunning. the 56-year-old now facing two charges of obstruction based on allegations that he, along with former president trump and personal aide walt nauta

attempted to delete footage at mar-a-lago in june of 2022. de oliviera is also charged with making false statements to the fbi in a volunteer interview in january. classified documents were removed from a storage closet at mar-a-lago. the special counsel saying trump, nauta and de oliviera were trying to destroy evidence of that taking place. the indictment says de oliviera allegedly said the boss wanted the footage deleted and asked how long it kept footage. that employee responded saying he didn't know how to do that, but de oliviera pressed the employee, not taking no for an answer asking, what are we going to do? all of this allegedly taking place after the subpoena for the security footage had been sent to trump's attorney. so far no comment from de oliviera or his attorney. whit? >> victor oquendo in miami, thank you. robin? another weekend of deadly gun violence in america. manhunts across the country as police search for assailants who

opened fire. alex perez is following the latest developments from chicago, where multiple shootings took place. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, a violent summer weekend, with incidents across the country. dozens injured by gun fire. this morning the epidemic of gun violence is surging. over the weekend across america, in indiana, a deadly shooting at a large party. officials say 19 wounded, one killed. >> we have multiple gsw victims and multiple fights breaking out. any available weekends to clear. >> reporter: in lansing, michigan, a chaotic scene as first responders arrived at this shopping center after a mass shooting. three people injured, two in critical condition. three suspects in custody. on the west coast, seattle police say they have now recovered the most guns ever in nearly 15 years. this after a shooting near a community event left five injured and two in critical condition.

all of the victims in their 20s. here in chicago this weekend, police say at least 47 were shot, 5 fatally. one of those shootings, police say, injured eight women and killed a 21-year-old female. authorities say a group of women were gathered outside an event when a black jeep drove by and opened fire. and, unfortunately, the number of mass shootings continues to climb. at least 418 so far this year compared to about 259 at this point last year. robin? >> all right. thank you so much. michael? >> thank you, robin. now to new concerns that china's hacked critical u.s. infrastructure in the search for malicious computer code systems that control american power grids and water supplies. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more for us. good morning, martha. >> reporter: the fear is that hidden malware in infrastructure like power grids and water supplies are meant to disrupt possible future military operations,

especially those that could involve taiwan. the new york times quotes an official saying that chinese hackers have what is essentially a ticking time bomb that could allow china to stall military deployments by cutting off power communications or water supplies at u.s. military bases or even beyond those bases to those of just ordinary citizens. it was just back in may that microsoft said it detected malware associated with china in guam, saying it could disrupt critical communications, infrastructure between the u.s. and the asia region during future crises. the biden administration saying only they are working relentlessly to defend the u.s. from disruption, while urging public utilities to step up their cyber defenses. michael? >> thank you. whit? now to the war in ukraine and deadly missile strikes hitting the home town of president zelenskyy. the attack follows ukrainian

drone strikes in moscow for the third time in a week. ian pannell is on the ground in ukraine with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. we're in president zelenskyy's hometown at the site of russian attack just a few hours ago. as you can see, it isn't a military target, but a residential apartment block that was struck early this morning when many people were still inside. we know that a number of people have been killed and over 40 have been injured, including a number of children. the attack here happens just one day after that dramatic drone strike on moscow sunday. video circulating online showing the moment the one uab exploded in an office used by the russian government. it was the third strike on moscow in the last week alone. russia blaming ukraine. president zelenskyy simply saying, gradually the war is returning to the territory of russia. here on the battlefield inside ukraine, more advances for the ukrainian armed forces. perhaps a sign russia is starting to feel the pressure.

the former russian president repeating threats about using a nuclear weapon if kyiv's counter offensive is successful. whit? >> another major concern there. ian, thank you. michael? renewed pain at the pump. gas prices climbing to their highest in eight months right in the midst of the summer driving season. trevor ault is live at a gas station here in new york with the numbers. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. you know, for months and months we had been enjoying gas prices falling. at least for the time being they are back on the upswing. national average for a gallon of gas is $3.75. that's up $0.16 from just last week. you mentioned it's the highest it's been in the past eight months. a big factor according to experts is this heat. it's supressing production at oil refineries, places like texas and louisiana. so hot that they cannot operate at full capacity. what that means is our oil reserves are the lowest they've been in eight years.

the price for oil has gone up. also this time of year naturally a bit more people are driving. means demand for gas is going up. all of those factors mean you are probably going to pay more at the gas pump. for some perspective, we are still about $0.50 cheaper than we were for a gallon of gas than we were this time last year. >> i guess that's one way to try to make you feel better about it. trevor, you're following another major headline for us that could impact americans. one of the biggest trucking companies in the u.s. is shutting down? >> reporter: yes. so this is a trucking company called yellow, michael. it is a giant company, nearly a century old. they're expected to file for bankruptcy as early as today. yellow's got nearly 30,000 employees, 12,000 trucks. they have major customers. we're talking about wal-mart, home depot. they do a ton of the shipping. the government deemed them so essential that they gave them a $700 million covid relief loan to keep them functioning. now they're expected to be the largest trucking bankruptcy in u.s. history. what that means for you is that experts estimate this means delivery costs a p

this morning lori vallow daybell set to learn her fate after being convicted of murdering her children. >> answer, guilty. >> reporter: facing the possibility of life behind bars without parole after a jury unanimously found her guilty of first degree murder for the deaths of 16-year-old tylee and 7-year-old jj. and conspireing to kill the wife of her lover and now husband, chad daybell. her estranged brother, adam cox, speaking with abc news before her sentencing. >> we're all, you know, hurt, devastated. it was one of those things that you never think will happen to your family. it's been torture, i know that. it's been rough. >> reporter: tylee and jj were last seen in september 2019. prosecutors say lori and chad, a doomsday author, claimed her kids were zombies and killed them. then months later, the couple

seen dancing at their wedding on this beach in hawaii. it was there east idaho news captured the moment police served vallow daybell with a court order to return the children to idaho. where are your kids? >> no comment. >> no comment? >> reporter: footage obtained by fox 10 phoenix showing the moment she was served a court order to prove her children were still alive. >> do you need something? >> any questions? do you have any questions for that? no? okay. >> reporter: just one piece of evidence that jurors sat through as they made their decision to convict vallow daybell. abc news speaking with one of those jurors shortly after the verdict. >> as the case progressed, as the evidence came to light, testimony was shared, it was harder to look at her. growing up, you talk about good and bad, god and evil.

i think for the first time in my life, i put a face to evil. >> reporter: jj and tylee's remains were found on an idaho property belonging to chad daybell after a months long search. lori's legal team blaming chad for their deaths. he has pleaded not guilty. her family now hoping the sentencing will bring some closure. justice for tylee and jj. they didn't deserve anything. especially what happened to them. my brother alex is already dead. chad is in jail. lori is getting sentenced. they need to be in jail the rest of their lives. >> reporter: this unbelievably tragic and complicated saga. after today's sentencing is over, the state of arizona hopes to extradite lori vallow back to arizona to face charges for conspiracy to murder her fourth husband charles vallow an conspiracy to murder her niece's ex-husband. her current husband, chad

daybell, has his murder trial set for next year. he, of course, has pleaded not guilty. michael? >> so much, matt. thank you for bringing this. hopefully, this brings some closure for the families. thank you. robin? urgent search for a new hampshire woman and her young daughter reportedly kidnapped in haiti. stephanie ramos has the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning. the humanitarian aid organization the woman works for said she is a deeply compassionate and loving person who considers haiti her home. the haitian people her friends and family. the woman and her daughter were kidnapped as they worked near port-au-prince. this morning concern is growing for an american mother and her child kidnapped in haiti while working for a christian humanitarian aid organization. confirming alex, a nurse from new ham hire and wife of the director was abducted thursday morning with their child while serving in their community ministry near the capital of port-au-prince.

increase. for women it was almost 15%. >> wow. what may be causing this? >> number one, short and simple, women are simply drinking more than their counter parts. physiologically women, when we digest alcohol, digested with an enzyme. women typically have lower amounts of this enzyme, therefore exposing them to more toxic effects. i'm talking about liver disease, heart failure. beyond that, earlier menopause, lower rates of fertility, increased risks of colon and breast cancer. >> what should you do if you think you have an issue? what are the signs we should be looking for? >> i talk to patients about this all the time. if you're finding you're craving alcohol. if you're finding you're having irritability or anxiousness when you're not drinking, your tolerance is high compared to your friends, these are all warning signs that you should seek attention and help. talking to your provider. if you don't have access, calling the national hotline,

scarlet suffering from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. morgan posting this video of their family in the emergency room writing, we had a crane at our house to remove our broken hot tub. asher, axle and scarlet innocently stood on the front step to watch the action which resulted in them getting carbon monoxide poisoning due to the lack of air flow in our drive way, landing them in the er. >> it can happen in an outdoor setting. it's much more rare and less likely but you also have to remember that poorly ventilated areas, which usually we tend to see more often inside, but poorly ventilated areas are higher risk for carbon monoxide accumulation. >> asher, what's the crane doing? gonna bring us a hot tub? >> reporter: morgan telling gma the kids were outside for about 30 minutes. everything seemed normal when they went down for their nap. shortly after, she said asher was crying, complaining of a stomach ache. soon she describes him as barely responding.

then rushing to the hospital. according to the cdc, the most common symptoms of co poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. the miller family calling this a freak accident. morgan telling gma, i can't even really put words to it. it's just as a parent, being aware of something like that would not be my first instinct when they're outside. and the activity is seemingly so innocent. it landed them in the er. over the weekend, both parents happily reporting asher, axle and scarlet are home and doing well. morgan writing, thank you to everyone for the love, kindness and well wishes. and a huge thank you to the nurses and doctors for their quick thinking. these three are full of smiles. and morgan telling us her children were on high flow oxygen for over four hours in the er. her advice to other parents, trust your instincts. she knew something wasn't right and she's so glad they went to the hospital immediately, guys.

the country that are helping their communities in big ways. first we are headed to chicago for some unique sweets. >> unique sweets is more than a bakery. unique sweets is a community. >> a community born from a mother's love. just five years ago single mom of two lisa ferreira created a baking business as a way for her son sebastian, an autistic adult and his friends to bridge the gap between high school graduation and entering the work force. >> wow, this is hard. >> we started in the kitchen. none of us had any experience baking. the first couple of cup cakes were either really burned, really raw. the alarm in my house would go off all the time. jack, what are you doing? baking was a great tool because it was a means of practicing all of the different skill sets that we need so that we can be successful and independent.

>> little weak. >> little weak but the heart is strong. we're back now with mississippi strong, checking in with the community of rolling fork as they rebuild after the devastating tornado that ripped through the area four months ago as the community comes together to help one another. one local hub is providing relief in many, many ways. amid a small mississippi town still reeling from unimaginable tragedy, a life line emerges. >> paper towels, tissues, anything i could use. >> this is the sharkey county distribution center, open eight hours a day, five days a week. >> it started out of a need for everybody that lost everything. >> it's a vital flow of supplies for local residents in need after a devastating ef-4 tornado decimated rolling fork more than four months ago. >> it's been a blessing. we only have one store and they

run out of things. we can get the things we need. >> local stores, multiple restaurants and laundromats all flattened, impacting a county where 35% of the population lives below the poverty line. >> we are seeing about 50 to 75 people a day. some people we see once a month. some people we see every day. >> now in a transformed gymnasium at south delta high school, a stock pile of nonperishable food, baby products and hygiene items. nearby, a cafeteria full of unused clothes for men, women and children. all of it accessible through the drive-thru. >> it is a goal to keep this place open until we get every survivor back into the town of rolling fork. >> the hub fueled by donations, sharing requests on their needs for rolling fork facebook page. today those basic needs are greater than ever.

>> donations have slowed way, way down. we're gonna wind up running out if that doesn't step up. people are still really wanting cleaning supplies. food supplies, hygiene supplies and watered. >> this past week, the mississippi food network answering their call. a short term solution on the long road to recovery. >> bless you. >> the center's driving force, a small group of dedicated volunteers like rebecca hey. and people like antonio joyner getting back to work with the national dislocater worker grant program. >> it's about getting our community back together. >> the program offering him a $15 per hour wage and giving a purpose to his home town. >> we're just a big family. >> a beacon of light in a community emerging from the dark. >> everybody that comes through this line, i want them to have smiled at least one time.

that could be the only smile they give today. there's got to be the bright light somewhere. and we like being that. >> we know our viewers have been so generous and the outpouring of support has been what's kept this community going, from strangers to locals. volunteers even leaving their own jobs to offer services to the distribution center. their hope for their neighbors to return to rolling fork so they can continue to rebuild. i remember after hurricane katrina, there was a church seattle university presbyterian. they had members of their congregation in the area for an entire year down there helping. you just have to know that you have to continue to think. i know you were on the ground there in rolling fork. >> i was struck by the people there. there was one business open downtown. it was a bank. they came back to work. they had families and friends who lost their lives, their homes. they said downtown was the heart beat of that community and they had to keep it open and keep it going.

it up with more ingredients. i like the sound of that. >> very simple. >> we don't need to mash it too much. we have some, right? when i think about avocado, i think about cilantro. >> yes, yes. >> you think about other things. you're talking about different herbs you use. >> i'm trying to mash it. it's a little hard. in terms of the herbs, i like to add -- >> exactly. >> talking about the herbs. lots of herbs there. >> what i like to do is not add it into the avocado. i feel like it masks it too much. i always like to stress the greens. mint, flat leaf parsley. whatever you have going on, thyme. whatever you have going on in the garden, it works. put a little guac on the tostada. by the way, they are baked in the oven, not fried. i'm looking out for everybody's waist lines this summer. >> looks like we have boiled egg. >> hard boiled egg. put some of that over the top. there you go. then the greens. putting this over the top.
