francisco today closes its doors for good. abc 7 news at 6:00 starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> the water, because of the rain, is so clean and clear this year, it is unbelievable. dion: a hotspot to keep cool in the bay area reopens just in time for our summer scorcher. it looks refreshing. thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. let's take a live look outside at the beach. parts of the very area -- bay area are sweltering today. this is the hottest day of the year so far. let's get to your accuweather forecast. spencer is standing by with how hot it is going to get. spencer: it is still over 100 in some spots. let's take a look at the 24-hour temperature change. you can see it is so much hotter today than this time yesterday.

yesterday was a pretty hot day, but it is 16 degrees warmer in san francisco and hayward. 10 degrees warmer in most other areas as well. 105 fairfield, 101 concord, livermore. up in the north bay, 105 cloverdale, 103 ukiah. numerous locations have temperatures in the 90's. los gatos with a temperature reading right now 102. temperatures are slowly coming down, but this heat is not going to recede anytime soon. we have at least another date of weather almost as high coming up. dion. dion: thanks. our team coverage of the heat on is now focusing on dealing with the elements. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is live where this heat has people searching for ways to keep cool and has fire crews on alert. hi there, cornell. cornell: yeah. a really busy day for

firefighters. there was so much dry grass. we were here when crews jumped on a grass fire right across the road and stopped it into toddy -- in cotati. the heat sent a lot of families straight to the beach. >> a vegetation fire impacted two infrastructures. cornell: this cotati ranch of west sierra avenue was saved from a fast-moving grass fire which broke out saturday, on one of the hottest days of the year. the fire was stopped at one acre. >> it is hot, it's dry. there's a lot of people are out. you know, just be careful making decisions. mow early. cornell: on friday, crews battled flames from the ground and the air, putting out this 24 acre grass fire in petaluma near san antonio road. firefighters say they are bracing for the heat and ready for fire season. >> we had some very cool periods to an immediate warm period.

the temperatures are in the 90's, up to 100, so keeping the crews acclimated and keeping them hydrated. cornell: cool water at the russian river was too good to pass up when temperatures were sizzling. hundreds of families made the trip to memorial beach for some relief. >> this is the perfect timing. we are getting up to the near 100's. it is exciting for all the families here locally, and, you know, from the bay area. cornell: this popular swimming spot is reopening for the first time in four years. the pandemic and drought prevented the summertime dam from being built here, but now it is back in time for the july 4 weekend. >> it feels nice. we have been waiting forever for the hot weather to come. it's perfect. the kids love it. look at all of them. jim: it's nice to have it back up, and the water, because of the rain, it is so clear and so

clean, it is unbelievable. cornell: families grilling up some amazing food under the hot summer sun. a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. how did you end up behind the grill on this hot day? >> daddy duties. that's just how it is. cornell: so many people there today. park rangers expect 2000 people will be there at memorial beach on july 4. as for today's fire, calfire says it is under investigation. we are live in cotati, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. dion: thank you. a medical emergency led to a helicopter rescue at marshall beach in san francisco. sf firefighters were initially called out. the helicopter was then called into flight of the beach around 3:00 this afternoon. it is unclear what led to the emergency, but authorities say the man had to be helped off one nearby trail because of his condition. over in the east bay, beaches are packed hundreds of visitors, as you can see, doing their best to keep cool at crown

beach in alameda. many of them hit the sand early, trying to get a good spot before the temperatures spiked. jeanette: it is so hot. i did not take my shoes off. but it is hot. >> just preparation for the summer. dion: parts of the east bay are getting the hottest temperatures, but the breeze off the they are keeping temperatures a little bit cooler over in alameda. calfire is getting 24 additional firefighting aircraft. 19 will be provided by gavin newsom's administration. the additions include three large air tankers, each designed to carry up to 4000 gallons of retardant. last week alone, calfire responded to over 300 wildfires. as those summer temperatures continue to increase across the state. in the south bay, dozens of cooling center locations are now open to help people escape the

will not reopen after it locks its doors at 8:00 tonight. old navy says it is working to identify new locations in downtown san francisco, but the closure is a blow to the once bustling union square shopping area. banana republic, whole foods, saks off fifth, and nordstrom have all announced shutdowns in recent months. all right, notice something? the outline is all that remains of the san francisco pride pink triangle atop twin peaks. organizers say more than 700 volunteers helped transport, build, and lay out 175 bright pink tarps to form the shape of the triangle. it went on display two weeks ago, and this morning it was disassembled. the pink triangle was once used to brand people suspected of being gay in nazi concentration camps, and now it a symbol of protest against homophobia. san francisco is the only city in the world with a giant pink triangle hovering over the city during its pride festivities get

dion: thousands of employees in the bay area got a raise today. minimum wages went up in six cities, and thishows where . emeryville now has the highest cal minimum wage at $18.67 an hour. all are higher than the state minimum wage. also starting today, we will pay more to cross the golden gate bridge into san francisco. taking a live look outside right now, where it is hot, for drivers with fastrak, the increase is from $8.40 to $8.75. golden gate transit bus and ferry rates also went up today. another price increase went into effect today. east bay mud customers will notice higher rates on their water bills. it will cost the average single-family home an extra $.19

a day. rates will go up another $.21 in july of next year. the agency says the increases are needed to fund critical investments in wastewater infrastructure. "twitter down" trended today, as thousands of users were limited. owner elon musk says the site is temporarily limiting the number of posts people can read. he changed the limits three times a day. those maximums are 10,000 for verified accounts, 1000 for unverified, then 500 limit for unverified accounts. people without an account cannot even see any content. musk addressed changes, what he called extreme data scraping and blamed companies behind ai technologies for that change. some visitors to yosemite are leaving disappointed. it seems the national park has a popularity problem this summer. the impact a huge crowd rush at

dion: some visitors trying to get into yosemite national park are being forced to reconsider their plans. huge early summer crowds are facing wait times about two five -- of up to five hours just to get inside. this is the first peak tourist season since the pandemic, but yosemite does not have a reservation requirement. that policy change was announced in november. since then, record amounts of rain and snowfall have led to road closures and repairs that are limiting where visitors can go in the park. celebrating women and celebrating representation. just some of the topics being discussed today at the essence festival of culture in new orleans. day three kicking off with thousands once again filling the new orleans convention center,

[laughter] dion: i think that pretty much sums it up. spencer: we cannot get away from it, can we? today's high temperature, we got up to 108 in fairfield today, seven livermore, santa rosa was actually higher than 101. this is the reading at sonoma county airport, but the city of santa rosa was higher than that. even fremont, 101. pretty warm all across the bay area. right now we have a live view over sutro tower, looking out over san francisco, where it is 76 degrees, 77 oakland, palo alto 86, 61 at half moon bay. golden gate, lingering clouds. finally the sky has become blue there. map 88, 1 05 f fairfield, 101 concord and livermore. looking down to the bank, from mount tam, these are our

forecast headlines, a thin marine layer tonight. it will have minimal cooling. heat persists tonight. a much cooler pattern beginning fourth of july. nonetheless, we have this heat advisory in effect until 11:00 tomorrow night for virtually all of the bay except the immediate shoreline and the coast. heat illnesses are possible at high temperatures range from the low and mid 90's to about 105 degrees tomorrow in the hottest area spirit we have a beach hazard statement in effect until 11:00 tomorrow night, because the sea surface temperatures are a bit colder than normal, so it is possible to have cold water shock when you going into that water, especially if you go from very warm air. temperatures under mainly clear skies will range from the mid-50's to the mid 60's, so it will be pretty mild overnight.
