the most significant area of brief downpours is actually pushing through san francisco and arlington bay and will be right over oakland in the coming minutes. through tomorrow, we expect more. of rain. they will be sort of widespread, but they will be rain. the forecast animation shows the next wave is likely to come in just before the morning weather heay we start to get more areas of rain and downpours and maybe some more snow. i'll have more in the seven-day forecast. the on: -- the sea are being wiped out by snow. the snowt h ofuscalurries.ed this was the view from highway 89 going from truckee into

are targeted just for your area. download now and be able to enable those push notifications. we are moving on now to new details in that tragic sunday hike in the south bay. a mother hiking with her son and his boy scout troop killed after a tree fell on her this morning. it happened at about 10:00 a.m. in the cupertino/los altos area. j.r. stone spent the afternoon there and has more. >> that's terrible. >> i would never think it's possible. jr: south bay hikers in a bit of shock sunday after learning that a woman died when a tree fell on her here at rancho san antonio county. >> iterble tragedy. i h srdea whe husitbaasnd and son, so it is a horrible tragedy. >> emergency crews uae tvse't's d to get to these hikes on the trail.

those with the boy scouts of america confirm the woman who died was the mother of a scout participating in the hike. >> bystanders attended to remove the tree and unsuccessful. when our firefighters arrived on scene, they were able to extricate the person from under the tree. they attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful as well. >> hikers say it is concerning to hear this, but not the first time a tree has come down recently in this part. less than two weeks ago, a small tree fell on a nearby bridge. that situation, though, pales in comparison to what happened sunday. >> it is really pretty shocking. i've been hiking here for 20 years with my son. this park is really awesome. they are constantly trimming the trees, constantly taking care of it. i feel really bad that happened and>> i think most people are jt enjoying the flora and fauna of the park and not really paying

attention to -- you know, looking up and saying that tree is at a bad angle or go somewhere's. it is a horrible tragedy. jr: the trail where this happened is now closed off to the public. as for family members, they are ver what happen ,d dion students at montgomery high school in santa rosa are planting a walkout -- planning a walkout to demand better safety after a deadly classroom staffing. three police officers will be at the school as students return for the first time since the wednesday incident. a 16-year-old was killed. police believe the stabbing happened during a confrontation between multiple students. the 15-year-old freshman accused of stabbing him as well as another student have been arrested. santa rosa's police chief will attend an upcoming listening session on school safety tuesday at the friedman event center.

oakland police say the department has additional resources on the streets this weekend crackdown on illegal sideshows. officials that anyone who takes part in a sideshow could have their vehicles towed and seized 30 days. tonight, those iconic lights along the bay bridge have shimmered for the very last time, at least for the foreseeable future. let's get you a live look from the south beach camera right now. as you can see, a little bit depressing there. no more dazzling display. today is the 10-year anniversary of the light installation, but due to need of repairs and lack of funding, tonight was the finale. here's the moment those 25,000 led lights turned off at 8:00 p.m. there is a path for these lights to come back on again. a massive fundraising campaign is underway. >> it was the area bridge that did not ggeet.y a

dion: once again on storm watch, we are taking another quick look at live doppler 7 as we get you ready for another busy weekend ahead. lots of green, the smattering's of it. spencer christian is standing by and has his full forecast for tomorrow. 11:00, scary moments on a southwest light to florida today. check out all this smoke in the cabin. in a statement to abc news, south west says the plane took off in havana, cuba, and had reports of words striking. the airplane nose and -- reports of birds striking the airplane nose and engine shortly after takeoff.

the pilot to one passengers to cover their nose and mouth. passengers had to get off through the emergency inflatable slides. the good news -- everyone was ok and later flown to their initial destination in fort lauderdale. florida governor ronti made the trip to southern california to speak at the ronald reagan presidential library. though it did not come without protest. graffiti was sprayed on the library before he even arrived. one of the entrance signs reads, as you can see, ron defascist. it was removed before he arrived. he spoke with more than 100 attendees. though he has not officially entered the 2024 presidential race. experts do see his visit to the reagan presidential library as an addition to gop voters in california. before his arrival, about 100

protesters also reportedly gathered at the entrance waving pride flags and president biden flags. a house fire poses challenges for crews in san francisco today. flames gutted the home on 40th avenue in the richmond district. crews also had a dangerous live wire that was down in front of the house, and people living nearby were told to stay inside until the fire was out and the wire d energized. >> the wires you see around our area, we have to get our firefighters to the roof. we have to get those superheated gases out of the building by cutting a hole in the roof. this is what we train for. we cannot just stop working until that is safe. >> some 70 odd firefighters responded to the scene. flames spread to a second building, causing minor damage as well. one person will now have to find a place to stay. no one was hurt. later in the day, and e-scooter battery is being blamed for

francisco from central tower. 45 in the city. low 40's in palo alto, san jose, and santa clara. 39 at half moon bay. the view at emeryville looking westward, almost all in the 30's. 42 at what a beautiful sky over the bay looking from our exploratorium camera toward the bay bridge. a little bit of clearing and a little bit of clouds, and just a nice balance of texture in the picture. wintry mix of precipitation with us tonight, though not very widespread and into tomorrow, this unsettled pattern continues into midweek. below average temperatures will be with us much of the week. this storm, such as it i as a level 1. we expect periods of rain, some may be brief downpours, breezy. a slight chance of thunder. forecast animation starting at midnight shows that by about

3:00 a.m. or so, we will see the next wave of widespread and steadier rain beginning to push on shore and maybe some brief downpours higher elevations. that will sweep through during the morning commute, so it will be a wet morning for many out on the roadways, but that will be out of here by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, giving us a few hours of quiet weather before mid when a few more widely scattered pockets of rain spread to the area. that will continue through early tuesday morning. generally under .2 of an inch for most areas. we are talking mid-30's in most of the inland areas, upper 30's to around 40 on the bay and coastline. highs tomorrow not very high at all. mainly 51 to 54 degrees for most of the bay area, and we still have a storm warning in effect for the sierra. 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. the snow will be heavy, but the additional accumulation will not be very high.

dion: once again, taking a look at the live doppler 7 where you can see, yes, there is green on the radar indicating precipitation. that forecast still very unsettled for the week ahead. we have spencer christian standing by with your final forecast coming up in a little bit. our storm certainly walloped tahoe, and these cameras to show us why. interstate 80 was closed this morning and chains are required on highway 50. there's also possible danger from backcountry avalanches at all elevations. suzanne phan has a look at the impact of all that snow. >> this stuff is light and dry. this isn't, like, heavy snow pack. suzanne: kevin cooper has plenty of snow to be thankful for. >> i live in the snow capital of the united states right now.

suzanne: all the fresh snow he is seeing is great for the sierra, the ski resorts, and the snowpack, but there's also a lot of danger in the mountains right now. >> right now with that light and dry and the wind we are experiencing, the avalanche danger is upwards of high to extreme. suzanne: at heavenly mountain resorts, cruise have been working on avalanche control. part of highway 50 has been closed off and on because of that. >> i was at the top of the mountain this morning and it was just a white out. suzanne: as caltrans works to clear the roads. >> we are out there clearing snow as quickly as possible, but it has building up. suzanne: ski resorts also have their hands full dealing with that fresh powder. >> we are at 40 feet for the season and there's more in the forecast. suzanne: except records to be broken in the next couple of days. >> we had a big winter i 2016-2017, but i think we will

surpass that. we could be reaching record snowpack by the end of the week. >> this has been one of the most consistent and best snowpacks we have seen in at least 30 years. suzanne: experts say don't rush to resorts until things clear out. >> we've got plenty of snow. we are going to extend the season. don't worry. dion: now to the new developments in ohio and the cleanup of yet another norfolk southern train derailment. yesterday's incident in the town of springfield was not carrying hazardous materials, but it only inflamed skepticism after the recent disastrous toxic derailment. mona kosar abdi explains us the norfolk southern ceo will testify before congress this week. mona: dashcam video shows the moment a norfolk southern train derailed. >> i looked up and there was all kinds of debris and metal shooting out from under the train cars. mona: norfolk southern saying 28

of the 212 cars derailed, including 4 empty tankers with residual amounts of diesel exhaust fluid and common industrial products. >> once we got cruise in there, we noticed there were no hazards leaking, no spillage. mona: ohio's epa director looking to reassure residents in the area. >> there was no release of any chemical or hazardous material to the soil, air, or water. we were, of course, tracking that closely. mona: there were no reported injuries, and the cause is under investigation. this is the third derailment in ohio so far this year. >> this train is over 200 cars, which is 50 more than the east palestine train, so the railroad has a lot of questions to answer, and they really have not done it for a while yet. mona: that derailment in east palestine causing a massive toxic spill. new studies indicate elevated levels of acrylate, which can cause skin, respiratory, and

mucous membrane irritation. most common symptoms people are reporting are headaches followed by anxiety, coughing, fatigue, and skin irritation. >> our data and epa data shows there's need for further follow-up to show that concentrations of various pollutions are going down to a level where they would be not potentially harmful to people's health. mona: norfolk southern saying this today -- >> safety is our number one priority. as i stated earlier, our mainline derailments are on the decline. dion: ogre driving goal here at abc 7 is to help build a better bay area, and one of the biggest existing issues is the city of san francisco's drug crisis. more than a dozen local leaders are in new york city to see the city's first ever safe drug consumption site. san francisco is hoping to open three by the end of the year,

but there are legal hurdles. tara campbell has the story now. tara: there are three -- there are two safe consumption sites in new york city. one of them is right here behind me. both are operated by a nonprofit called on point. >> we are putting in an oral hour nasal airway, make sure the oxygen we are pumping in gets to the right place. >> the pace is fast and the purpose is clear -- save lives and connect drug users to services they need from treatment to medical care, shower, and laundry. on point is operating the first sanctioned safe consumption sites in the u.s. one location in harlem and the other in washington heights. and more than a dozen of san francisco's local leaders are taking note, from city supervisors to the san francisco fire department, public health, and nonprofits hoping to cooperate on safe consumption sites in san francisco.

>> i think the biggest take away is how intentionally everything is done, right? this is not a fly-by-night operation. this operation is very intentional. it is very skilled, and the people here really know what they are doing. tara: sam rivero is executive director of on point and says properly trained staff is key. >> we are not there just letting it happen. we are really tough on how we operate these services. >> four milligram naloxone spray. i'm sure you are all aware of this life-saving drug. tara: since opening nearly a year and a half ago, staff has overseen more than 55,000 drug injections or inhalations and reversed more than 700 overdoses. it has also connected more than 2200 people to treatment. >> we know that an opioid

tara: and overdose prevention specialist. >> 80% of the overdoses, all we have to do is put on an oxygen mask connected to an oxygen tank. start rub, -- sternum rub a big breath, that's all we have to do. >> i prepared already in the needle. tara: sam says he feels safer using his drugs under supervision. >> it is cocaine with heroin mixed. >> you are going to inject >> yes, inject it here. there's no other better place than here. >> how often do you come to the center? >> every day. >> where would you go otherwise? >> basically in the bathroom by myself. tara: another point of interest

f the safe consumption sites. how is it impacting the local neighborhoods? they will be getting a look at that as well. >> what's going on inside is really important, and i think is saving lives, but that's not going to work if it is creating ms outside. tara: supervisor matt dorsey noticing clean streets and very little open air drug use. >> one thing that really through here is this organization running the overdose prevention centers in new york is absolutely committed to being a good neighbor and a good partner with the new york city police department. >> it i you look around here, you see drugs everywhere. there would be needles everywhere. tara: fred is battling addiction and depression and says he does access the safe consumption sites and that they have also changed the streets. anything.an go tohe par

it was not safe. people were dying. you would pretty much walk over a body here. tara: and since the safe consumption sites? >> it has changed a whole lot. tara: safe consumption sites are illegal under federal law, but the new york model could provide a path forward. these sites are funded by private donations, not public dollars, making the city in theory less liable. how do you and do you think this will move the ball forward in bringing sites to san francisco? >> i do. we now have a group of advocates from san francisco who have seen these centers in real life and have proof that they not only save lives but improve neighborhood conditions. dion: tara travel to north america's first ever safe injection site in vancouver, canada, to see how it works. you can watch "injecting hope"

civil rights marchers as they attempted to cross the edmund pettus bridge. today, president biden said voting rights are still being threatened. >> the right to vote, to have your vote counted, is the threshold of democracy and liberty. with it, anything is possible. without it, without that right, nothing is possible. this fundamental right remains under assault. conservative supreme court has gutted the voting rights act over the years. dion: the president urged congress to pass the john lewis voting rights act and the freedom to vote act. both measures are currently stalled in congress. all right, one last check of the weather now. this strange pattern does not seem to be letting up. spencer: very, very strange. very unseasonal, we say. fortunately, right now, we don't have much in the way of reciprocation. we have the color of bit. we have patchy areas of light

rain. the storm still ranks level one on the storm impact scale. through tomorrow, we will have more periods of mainly light rain, maybe an occasional brief downpour. breezy. snow levels way down to under 2000 feet. the next wave of rain will sweep in during the overnight hours and continue during the morning commute, so it will probably be a wet morning commute in many locations. more smaller waves of rain coming in the afternoon tomorrow and that pattern continues into late tomorrow night and early tuesday. on we go to overnight conditions, low temperatures dropping into the mid to upper 30's inland, upper 30's around the bay shoreline, and it will get colder as we head toward the middle of the week. we will dry out a little bit wednesday and thursday, but thursday shaping up to be the coldest morning of the week and we may have some record low temperatures developing. then rain and milder weather will arrive next weekend. dion: cold but at least drive. will take the trade-off. thanks. once again to larry beil and a

but you guys are playing better of late. what are the positives you will take away from this game? >> in the second half, try to get that flow with stefan out there and andre coming back, this meant a lot of time with a have not been out on the court. we just got to figure it out, and i think we responded well, like we have been doing. i think the biggest thing for us is, you know, coming out stronger. chris: can you describe what that is like, to have staff -- steph missing for about a month? do can you describe how hard it is for you guys? >> he makes it easy. he's so unselfish, and he wants other guys to be aggressive, and he knows when to take over. i think he did it in the fourth quarter. he started picking us back up. we don't have to stress about shots. he's so selfless it allows us to just play our game. chris: did you see that in his

eyes? what is it like when he is activated like that? >> he knows how to correct again, knows how to respond. it is great to see him at their confident, moving well. chris: do you guys see things trending the way you want to cap in the playoffs, you need to win at least one hour two to get to the series. >> for sure. tonight i think we played three good quarters of basketball. we just have to, stronger, be locked in on the road. we don't have the fans at chase center behind us. chris: larry: the warriors get steph curry back, andre back, and loose on the road to the lakers. the road woes continue, but you've got to feel good you have steph curry back. >> there's no question. he's one of the best players in this game, and what is amazing about him is that he gives everybody confidence around him when he's back.

being there and doing that for so many years, i think this is a good start. larry: coach, how long before steve kerr can get his rotation set? steph curry is back. andre is back. at some point, andrew wiggins and gary payton ii. >> he clearly have to figure out how to win on the road. you have to do that on the playoffs no matter what position you are in. if there's any comfort when you are feeling down, steph can overcome that for you, but going on the road is going to make it uncomfortable. got to figure out the rotation set. chris: if you games on this stretch, suddenly you could find yourself gang up at the plate in the western conference you could find yourself going up at the play in the western conference standards. >> if we are being honest, the

defense the warriors have been playing is not nearly the defense we know they comply. what are looking for is bringing up that intensity to playoff level. chris: what's the remedy? >> score more points. that's how the game works. but defense travels, it alw has, no matter the sport. when you want to get on the road, you have to hit some stops and lock in. if you are steve kerr, you have one choice like a favorite son. it says a lot considering how good steph curry is on offense, but i think dream on on the defensive end is more important than steph curry is on offense. larry: that's a good question. score more points than the other team. he's not the best analyst in the business. still undefeated on the abc 7 coaching staff. thank you. worry us in okc on tuesday.
