announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> a large dark fire burning lake berryessa. dozens of boats and jet skis up in flames sending plumes of smoke into the air. and from the wind to the snow it has been a wild week of weather. we are tracking the power outages, road closures and what to expect. good morning. i'm liz kreutz here with lisa argen. let's check on the weather. a little calmer today. lisa: we are still seeing high elevation snow showers lingering but we are not done with the

wintry weather throughout the weekend and early next week. live doppler 7 and still rain and snow mixed in the higher elevations of the north bay. taking you over to american canyon and vallejo, it is chilly. the rain will be on and off the next couple of hours verrilli sparse -- but really sparse. 41 novato look cloud cover hanging on today. cloudy skies with a ra afternoonw. we timeout your sunday system, a stronger monday system and more snow expected. liz: thank you. developing overnight, a large fire at a dock on lake berryessa in napa county. you can see the dramatic images of the dock engulfed in flames.

calfire 12 houseboats. >> the crews tried to attack it from some other boats using pumps to suppress the fire. it is going to be a while before we can get a good grasp on the number of boats that burned. liz: this happened at markley cove. nobody was injured and no word on what may have caused the fire. new this morning, the bay area cartoonist that created the comic strip "dilbert"'s facing backlash after racist comments on a podcast.

he said black people were a hate group and he "does not want anything to do with them." " dilbert" has been around for more than 30 years and now newspapers are pulling the strip because of these comments. on twitter today adams doubled down on those comments, writing a lot of people are angry with me but he has not heard anyone disagree. we will keep you posted. happening today, police are urging jewish communities to be vigilant, warning neo-nazi groups may be planning a national day of hate. they are monitoring online chatter from anti-semitic groups. the antidefamation league posted in response saying, "the nationwide extremist day of hate this saturday is meant to divide us, but we will remain united in our kindness and positivity." police department the new york said they would step up their presence as a safety precaution.

happening now, power is slowly coming back on after this week's wind and snow brought trees and power lines down across the area. you are looking at pg&e's map showing the outages. we are seeing the largest amount of people without electricity in the santa cruz mountains as well as the north bay. as of last night nearly 8000 people in the bay area are without power. now to the snow that took a lot of people in the bay area by surprise. up in the north bay it has made things dangerous along highway 29 that it could be closed throughout the weekend. it starts at tubbs lane and goes to the lake county line. tara campbell was there and found a lot of people heading to the hills to check out the snow. tara: the sound of a not so familiar sight in napa county. >> i feel good. play with the snow. i am really happy. tara: the snow covered hills seen from miles away, drawing

people in. >> enjoy. tara: the sleds coming out and smiles too. the young and the older flocking to higher elevations for a frolic and some fun. >> we are just coming to see the snow from santa rosa. [laughter] tara: just down the way a sibling snowball fight. they're making their way all the way from napa. >> we live where it is really sunny so we do not get snow. tara: her brother says he has never seen anything like it. >> really weird. this is never happened. first time in my 18 years of living i have ever seen this. tara: the best part, says his sister -- >> throwing snowballs at my siblings. tara: mom and dad happy to watch from their vehicle. while plenty of people are busy having fun with the snow others have been busy trying to clear it. >> we have been out working, clearing roads and trying to

help get around this apocalyptic snowstorm for us. tara: nine inches of snow dropping in napa county over 24 hours. piling onto roads, the tracks lefteh have you ever seen anything like this? >> a couple of times. tara: when was the last time you saw it like this? >> never quite this bad in my lifetime. tara: tara campbell, abc 7 news. liz: mother nature also brought a rare sight of snow to the east bay. residents of oakland hills, over into an berkeley hills got the best of it. regional park caught heavy snowfall yesterday. big, white flakes were seen falling on the road for a short time. some came together to make a snowman while others launched snowballs at each other. it was a delightful experience for residents, some calling it a winter wonderland. don says it has been 30 years since he has seen snow in the area. >> it is snowing more heavily than i have ever seen in berkeley. i have lived here 30 years. liz: other areas like grizzly

peak and joaquin miller park also saw snowfall. happening today, congresswoman barbara lee will hold her first campaign event for u.s. senate hoping to replace senator feinstein. it will be held at laney college museum in oakland at 12:00 p.m. she is the third high-profile democrat to jump into the race alongside katie porter and adam schiff. if she wins, she will be the third black woman to serve the u.s. senate. i spoke to her this week about the significance of her campaign and why she believes her age should not be a factor. >> to do nothing has never been an option for me. liz: congresswoman barbara lee says she is running to replace senator dianne feinstein. we met up with her hours after that announcement. >> i think the senate needs a champion like myself who is a progressive woman, progressive african-american woman, who has

fought for progressive causes all my life. liz: lee has served in congress since 1998. she said the court issues of her campaign are the climate crisis, housing and public safety. if she wins, she will be the only black woman currently serving in the u.s. senate. do you believe voters should be factoring race and gender into their decision? >> i hope people, voters especially, factor in the uniqueness and the perspective of diversity. not having a black woman the challenges we faced in this country and still we rise, as dr. maya angelou said, that type of fight, that understanding of what it means to be shut out. not only for people of color but the lgbtq community, disabled community, our seniors. i have had many challenges and have had to break through barriers. liz: she said she has let on issues like -- lead on issues

like cannabis reform, introducing the first marijuana justice act to address high incarceration rates. it is going to be a tough race. field. a competitive field. why should voters choose barbara lee? >> barbara lee has had a history of fighting for progressive causes. i have been resisting so much. liz: in her campaign video she shares a story from growing up in los angeles where she fought to become the first black cheerleader. >> when my high school said cheerleaders could not be black i took them on. liz: she was the only member of congress to vote against giving the president brought authorization for military force in afghanistan after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. >> in the face of countless death threats, i was the only no vote. liz: she is 76 years old and

would be in her 80's after serving a six-year senate term. one question is her age. how do you respond to people who have questions about your age or believe it is time for the next generation to be elected into office? >> first o you look at what i h, my energy level, my experience. i think voters will understand i am not ashamed of my age. i have been working at this all my life. i am glad to talk about my age because with age comes experience. liz: i also asked the congresswoman about a recent report that said she saw herself as a transitional candidate. she denied that and would not commit to only serving one term. she said the only thing she would commit to his winning the election and getting things done. let's get a check outside as we had to break. lisa: snow level is about 1500 feet to 1700 feet. you can see from this camera it looks like the snow is really

[horn honking] liz: this was the streets of oakland overnight. this truck was going in circles near the bay bridge. some people even hopped onto the back of the trailer during the stunt. cars were seen doing doughnuts at two other locations, including across from the coliseum and on the northbound freeway. developing in san pablo, all interstate 80 lanes have reopened after a deadly crash. this happened around 5:00 a.m. on the eastbound side. chp has yet to clear the scene and one car was flipped onto its roof and the driver unfortunately was killed. it is unclear if anyone else was

hurt. we know that multiple cars were involved. a string of lawsuits claiming san mateo probation officer sexually assaulted boys who were under county supervision for decades. the chronicle reports 10 civil complaints against the former deputy officer were filed in san mateo county. according to lawsuits, he threatened to increase the boy'' time and confinement if they did not comply. the plaintiffs claim "unlawful sexually abusive conduct happened for 22 years." the officer died in 2020 and cannot be held criminally or civilly liable. tomorrow a bay area community will show their support and raise awareness following two attacks on street vendors in san jose. they're hoping to raise awareness of the cookout tomorrow. amanda del castillo has more on what to expect and we want to warn you some of it might be hard to watch. amanda: following two separate

attacks in san jose last week activists are mobilizing to bring a san jose street vendor buy out sunday. organizer alex said -- >> during these times it is dric. have. deave.that anda: a process he found successive with crowds coming out for a similar event in support of a san diego vendor who was harassed by a group of college students. back in san jose video shows vendor carlos sanchez being taunted and threatened by a man with a baseball bat. days earlier this video was captured of the spender being brutally attacked and being knocked unconscious. >> money.

amanda: they will both serve as visitors at the site where sanchez was attacked along old bayshore highway in san jose beginning sunday at 1:00 p.m. until they sell out. >> people are going to show up, dry food, there will be music. you can get to know them and have a celebration. amanda: supporting two men whose traumatic experiences were caught on camera and quickly went viral. the shock still settling in for many, including veggielution, that runs a training program for east san jose residents. >> a lot of the entrepreneurs are women. this is definitely an issue that comes up. if they were to go out on their own to be selling their food, what kind of risk does this put them at? amanda: the man of accused of attacking sanchez has been arrested and put out a formal apology. he hopes to soon can be said

about the man who assaulted him. >> the only thing i say is there is a lot of crazy people on the street. we do not know when we are going to find one. amanda: amanda del castillo leo, abc 7 news. liz: on the peninsula drone view 7 captured this scene after snow covered the ground. news reporter zach fuentes checked out the impact from the storm, fun and serious. zach: snow like this is a site we so rarely get to see in the bay area. so rare that locals wanting to sled down the hill had to improvise by using boards meant for the ocean. this 2.5-year-old, not knowing what to make of his first time in the snow eventually warmed up to it, and the temperatures did too. to enjoy. lk at snow anatheho now we go home and cos.like thed

student who did undergrad in michigan shock to see the snow followed him here. >> we came to the bay area and was like, no way are we going to see snow. zach: although it has been mostly fun and games it did not cause without hiccups. as we drove on skyline boulevard we came across several broken trees, down to branches and fallen power lines. >> it was pretty crazy. trees were falling. we actually thought we were going to get locked up there. zach: caltrans urging everyone to drive safe. >> this is very rare for us in the bay area to receive such beautiful snow. but we have to be safe when we are out on the roadways. pay attention to the road, pay attention to the signs and use caution. zach: crews have been working steadily to keep the roads safer people to continue enjoying the weather. >> our crews are on the highways now doing the best they can in clearing falling trees out the

roadways and the ice or snow in various areas. zach: right now, all are taking in as much of the snow as they can while they can. >> we are going to look around and look at this scenery. zach: zach fuentes, abc 7 news. liz: lisa, let's get a check on the forecast. so fun to see people reveling in the snow. do you remember a time we have ever gotten this much snow? lisa: no. definitely flakes over the years but every talks about 1976. between now and then nothing so substantial. and this was generous. the system continues to bring rain and snow to the central coast, southern california getting hammered as we get closer. live doppler 7 picking up on the wraparound moisture that just wants to keep going. 1500 feet rain-snow mix, some sleet and out toward the coast, it has been showery and cold.

over around mount hamilton where the temperature is at 40 degrees. not a whole lot of moisture from mount tam you can see that accumulating snow. nice look outside at the golden gate bridge. 45 half moon bay and the cloudy skies around san francisco with 40 santa rosa, 42 concord, zephyr cove 20's, three to five inches of snow. this will pick up again on sunday and going through wednesday. the wintry mix ending locally. then we are looking at mostly cloudy skies today and tomorrow slightly warmer. then we go back to lower snow levels on monday. here's the rest of today. dry with a breakthrough the evening and then for sunday getting into the wet weather by 8:00. that line of heavy rain pushes through. we get a break overnight into

monday but in time for the commute. mid it is a stronger system. we get heavy downpours, very low snow levels once again. it takes us through the day on monday and behind that cold air. thunderstorms again on monday into tuesday. this is monday night and you can see the accumulating snow. we are going to add up the totals the next couple of days. tomorrow is about one third of an inch. we add into monday and tuesday and we are well over one inch. boy, that is not the whole story. this is an amazing snow maker. the series of cold weather systems through the sierra nevada thursday with 5, 6, 7 feet. 90 inches. a few light sprinkles. upper 40'to aut0's.the snow mayd where temperatures are only in the 30's. but if it melts, another opportunity not so much tomorrow but monday and tuesday. the accuweather 7-day forecast featuring the wet weather to end february.
