cars all towards 3:00 in the morning. >> we have a sanctioned red light district on cap street. dan: night has fallen in san francisco but in one neighborhood, the activity is only getting started. there's a reason it's only getting worse. but first -- >> the guy looked like he had malice in his eyes, like he wanted to hurt me. ama: shots at a san francisco synagogue. the video inside has the fbi looking for the man with the gun. dan: thank you for joining us. one man seen on video fire in what appeared to be blanks inside a jewish center last night. ama: no one was injured and the synagogue was not damaged. anser hassan spoke with witnesses who were there. >> this rabbi wants to send a

strong message. he said what happened at his synagogue was an act of terror and a crime. he has surveillance footage to prove why and they are lucky that no one was injured. >> terrorism does not have to involve killings. in my mind, what he did was he came and he did a terrorist attack. he came to terrorize people. anser: this junior rabbi and vice president of the jewish center in san francisco. surveillance video shows on wednesday night, a man enters the room, rex's gun and fires several rounds. >> the action is terrifying to have a stranger come in and start shooting in your place of worship, in your place that you should feel safe. anser: the small synagogue serves mostly russian-speaking jews. this man was there wednesday night. >> looks like, i ask do you speak russian, said yes. come join us. i did not hear what some people

said, i'm going to show you something. anser: he says that's when the suspect pulled out his gun. many believe the man shot blanks since no one was injured. he says the reason people were slow to react was simply because they were stunned. >> we all stopped. could you imagine like you invite somewhere, a friend, start shooting? unprepared. everybody was stopped. anser: the rabbi left before the suspect came but he is adamant that this is a hate crime. he says as the suspect leaves, he waives and makes reference to the mossad, israel's secret intelligence agency. >> i believe as he left he said say hello to mossad for me. he was harming mossad by scaring the jews in america in this one synagogue. i think the person is mentally unwell. anser: any statement, the san francisco police department says the suspect matches the description of a man who flashed

a gun at the nearby balboa theater earlier in the week. the rabbi says he is worried about the nearby jewish school. >> two weeks ago, someone drew a swastika at the school down the block. i don't know if it's this person, a different person. what if this person next time comes with a real gun with real bullets or with a knife? anser: the rabbi says they only called the police thursday morning because those who were there wednesday night feared retaliation. they plan to have extra security for friday's shabbat, the jewish sabbath which runs through saturday. the fbi is also involved and asking for help to identify the men. in the newsroom, anser hassan, abc7 news. ama: let's go outside now. we are going to take a live look from our east bay hills camera. after that long break from the rain, it is coming right back and it looks like it will be here to stay this weekend. dan: let's get to sandhya patel

that's what's the weirdest part about it. ama: the pentagon is tracking a suspected chinese spy balloon over the u.s. defense officials ordered a ground stop at the airport in billings, montana to make way for the launch of military f-22's. they eventually opted not to shoot the balloon down, saying it does not pose a risk because it's a t a higher altitude than airplanes fly. this comes as anthony blinken has a scheduled trip to beijing in eight few days. dan: we are hearing from the boy's dad who got attacked by a mountain lion in san mateo county. this video shows a mountain lion family last night. the group believes one of the cubs in this video was involved in the attack on the child. they believe the cub reacted because it was startled by the boy. they do not believe the cup is vicious. the five-year-old's father put out a statement, "we are going to give our son all the love and

care he needs and then when he is absolutely ready, we will start hiking again because that is what we do. we are an outdoor loving family and this experience will not take that away from us. i think it's important to not be afraid of mountain lines but to take care and be alert when they are in their habitat." tonight, neighbors and one area of san francisco are begging the city to step in after an uptick in alleged sex work in the neighborhood. many are reporting gunshots, fights and solicitation keeping the neighborhood awake at all hours. luz pena spoke sfpd on what they are doing to tackle this issue and this is a story you will see only on 7. >> hiding at home and documenting what happens out their window has become a nightly occurrence. >> it is friday, january 27 on cap street. and it's about

two girls in the middle of the intersection. >> alleged sex workers on san francisco's cap street in almost every driveway. >> a girl there, there's two more there, there's six writer. -- six right there. and i pan around this way and i can see another two down there. >> we have a sanctioned red light district on cap street. >> we see women walking down the middle of the streets pretty much naked, the line of bumper-to-bumper cars all towards 3:00 in the morning. it looks like the las vegas strip. >> fed up with what they say is a lack of action by city officials and sfpd, five residents agreed to share their stories. they fear for their lives and asked to remain anonymous. >> i am scared. i am scared of the pimps. >> i know that a lot of women are not there voluntarily.

cap says they've made multiple arrests but they are limited in what they can do. governor newsom signed a state law from scott wiener decriminalizing -- that appears to be sex work. >> -- in an effort to kind of address the johns that are coming in, the customers that are coming into the district. unfortunately, there have been some recent legislation that has been passed by our state senator which has now made loitering for the purpose of prostitution no longer a criminal offense. so our hands have been tied. >> the supervisor visited cap street last friday night and is now making this her top priority. >> i just have never seen this situation so dangerous and so out of control. >> supervisor ronan says she would like san francisco to legalize sex work in designated butthe ti-he future. >> next week, we are going to put up barricades on cap street between 22nd and 18th street.

it will close off the street to through traffic but the neighbors who live on the streets will be able to get into the street. >> for now, these residents say they are trapped inside their homes until something changes. >> it's like every night, pimps and prostitutes come and take our street hostage and neighbors are shut in. >> in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. dan: this is not just an issue on cap street in san francisco. our reporting from the i team's stephanie sierra documented similar activity outside of a catholic grade school in east oakland. when she asked scott wiener about his newly passed state law of loitering, he called it a copout from police to blame his legislation as a contriving problem, adding officers are well allowed to arrest the john's and the pimps. the entire investigation is one you will find only on 7.

the oakland hills tonight. cruise knocked a house fire earlier today. firefighters say it appears to have started by accident. three homes are impacted on next door to each other. we heard the fire began in one of the garages then spread to the house. at this time, investigators say, as i mentioned, it appears accidental. no one was injured. one pet was rescued safely. dan: the oakland zoo is set to reopen tomorrow after those strong winter storms created that big sinkhole that wiped out the main entrance road. the zoo had to shut down entirely on new year's day to make repairs. after more than a month, things are almost back to normal. sky 7 flew over today and saw cruise still on site making some final touches to the work. the zoo is planning to reopen at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. ama: we all love our dogs but what if we got to love them for much longer than we do now? that's the mission of a veterinarian medicine company in san francisco. tim johns went to find out what they are doing to give dogs

the storm for tomorrow morning is a level one. light to moderate rain, slick and slope for the morning commute, and it is going to be gusty at the coast and the hills. we already see the winds picking up over the hills. 3:00 in the morning, you will hear that rain pounding the pavement. 5:00, light to moderate rain across most parts of the bay area, which means your commute might take a little bit longer, so plan accordingly. scattered light showers at 7:00. this system is out of here. it's going to be a fast-moving cold front. rainfall totals will range from about 6/10 to about 13 hundredths of an inch in brentwood. in the mountains, winter storm watch is going up because a second storm will bring the potential for heavy snow. this is 4:00 p.m. saturday until 10:00 p.m. sunday. travel could be difficult. snow level from about 6000 dropping to 4000 feet, 6-28
