announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: >> liz: the video of officers beating him when he was pulled from the cart with a traffic stop. it shows him repeatedly screaming for his mother as he is punched, kicked, and upper sprayed. peaceful protests across the country, including here in the bay area. thank you for joining us. i'm liz kreutz. people across the country reacting to the release of the body camera footage showing memphis police officers beating 29-year-old tyre nichols.

besides the body camera footage, surveillance video capturing kicks, punches and baton strikes. five officers have already been fired in face several charges. this morning, two sheriffs's have been suspended while the actions during the beating are investigated. there been numerous protests in response, including some here in the bay area. tim johns reports from san francisco. tim protests sweeping the : country following the release of video showing the final moments of tyre nichols life. from the hometown of memphis to the streets of san francisco. many protesters with the same chant -- >> the racist police. tim following the release of the : footage, his parents out down, with abc news why they wanted the public to see the video. >> this justifies our thr son , showing that he was no threat

to them. tim: this once again sparks debate about policing the united states. >> i'm concerned because here we are again. liz: lisa hill is a professor at cal state east bay and believe s the problem is multifaceted and more complex than a few bad individual officers. >> why is a police officers feel that they are able to treat citizens inhumanely? tim: data shows killings at the hands of police are far higher countries and hill things greater oversight is needed to help reform the system. >> i think there are definite laws and policies and procedures in place that would prevent these actions. tim protests are expected to : continue over the coming days and despite all five of the officers a people are still expecting more. , >> i think there needs to be

an acknowledgment that these action have been taken against a particular demographic. i think people are looking for transparency and honesty. tim until that time comes, his : family says they won't stop >> i feel like my son was sent here on an assignment. his assignment was fulfilled and god took him home. tim: tim johns, abc 7 news. liz: hours before the video was released, his family and their attorneys came for chemist to call for reform and the creation of tyre's law which will officers get involved if that see injustice from another officer. >> it is justice for all of us. she wants reform. >> more importantly, we want peace we do not want any

disturbance. liz: they are also urging police to disband the police crime unit saying there were other cases of misconduct, including claims that were ignored, suggesting this could have been prevented. in the east bay businesses in , oakland were not taking chances. windows were boarded up from 12 street to mcarthur. at last check, the city has been relatively quiet following yesterday's release of the video. there is a protest planned tomorrow. the killing of tyre nichols has shaken the sacramento community. nichols is a sacramento native and lived there before moving to memphis two years ago. a huge part of his history in sacramento was skateboarding, where he and his tiled hood friend met. ryan talked about the impact nichols had on his life and how skating brought them together. ryan we had so many of those : days where we would just be skateboarding all day and talking about our future and what we want to do with our

lives and where we want to be. liz: a vigil will be held in regency park in s tyre used to skateboard this sunday at 6:30 p.m. the community in half moon bay came together to show its strength and support following the mass shooting monday that left seven dead and another injured. according to the san mateo district attorney's office, the suspect told investigators he was angry over a $100 equipment built for damage, and he told investigators it was not his fault but was apparently on a list of things that angered him. last night was about the victims hundreds of people showed up for , a vigil. amanda del castillo reports. ♪ amanda: gripping onto candles, grieving as a community, in downtown half moon bay friday, several hundred people gathered

for a vigil to honor the seven killed this week and to support the sole survivor. many of the crowd admitting in the aftermath every detail released has been eye-opening. >> it is so sad that it takes a tragedy like lost lives to see what is in the community around us. amanda: thi resend say had no e farm less than livable wages paid. this unknown reality only compounding the community's pain. >> it's hard to see that here where we had such affluence and wealth that there is people living less than a mile away with very little in terrible conditions. >> how anyone could let someone that worked for them live like that i do not understand it. ,amanda: the mayor spoke with reporters ahead of the vigil. sharing she was unaware chinese migrants were part of the local farming community. among the victims killed, two

bay area. this has been a for the asian american community, with two mass shootings ongoing during the lunar new year celebrations. our abc reporter takes a look of the trauma and mental health concerns the community is facing and help that is available. >> whether you are older younger like this high school student. >> we definitely don't talk about it, especially in my household. mental health is not an issue they talk about. two shootings have made it painfully clear for many in the community. he is with the development center in san francisco. >> folks are struggling with grappling with what it means that the shootings happened and what it means that they were perpetrated by elderly asian
