river brings yet another round of life-threatening conditions. in orange county, fast-rising waterways, swift water rescue teams rushing to save a woman desperately clinging to a tree. the woman rescued by helicopter pulled from the fast-moving water set down safely. in santa cruz neighborhoods flooded. >> that's pretty deep down here. >> reporter: this man driving through feet of water to see the damage left by the heavy rain to his home. and in the mountains, heavy snowfall bringing traffic to a halt near lake tahoe. visibility near zero. >> i mean, it is pretty tall. >> reporter: and in soda springs walls of snow with up to three feet more forecasted. now, the good news is right now california in a lull. the bad news is another storm system will slam them later on tonight into tomorrow. look at this, ten states under flood, wind and snow alerts this morning. and that has expanded east. here's the latest timing. we've got that one storm system pushing east bringing rain to the middle the country. another storm system coming into california slamming it with rain and snow.

then as we head into tuesday, the rocky mountains get a lot of snow. the northeast begins to get rain, and by wednesday that storm system strengthening in the middle of the country. we'll talk more about that coming up, eva. >> all right, thanks, danielle. now to the latest revelations about documents found at president biden's home. abc's maryalice parks is at the white house with more. good morning to you, maryalice. >> reporter: eva, good morning. once again the white house is correcting the record and revealing that they have, in fact, found even more classified pages than previously disclosed. on thursday morning the white house put out a statement confirming that a small number of documents have been found at the president's home in wilmington in the garage and just this week on wednesday night one additional document had been found in a room adjacent to the garage. now the special counsel to the president, richard sauber, is telling us that, in fact, hours after that was released, an additional five pages with classified markings were found in that adjacent room next to the garage.

now, the discovery of these new five pages was made apparently while sauber who has security clearance was with officials from the department of justice transferring that one page that had been found by the president's lawyers. now, bob bauer, biden's personal lawyer, put out a statement yesterday too trying to defend this confusing lack of communication. he said there were limitations on the information they could publicly disclose, quote, necessary to protect the investigation's integrity, but big picture, all week at every stage of this, there have been serious questions about the transparency or the lack of transparency from this white house. why were they confirming some batches of documents and not others when they knew that other documents had been found? eva. >> maryalice, thank you. there's a lot to talk about here. let's bring in jonathan karl who will be hosting "this week" later this morning. all right, jon, this slow drip, three disclosures in a week. two of which we know weren't fully complete when they were shared. i mean, just how damaging is this? >> i mean, the white house has

not handled this in a sterling matter, and it clearly is a problem. counsel investigation. ecial - we've seen how those can really suck up a white house's attention and become a major distraction, but you're right. the drip, drip, drip, the first documents were discovered on november 2nd. that was six days before the midterm elections. we didn't learn about them till earlier this week, and then you had the subsequent revelations. documents in the garage, documents in the room next to the garage. more documents in that room next to the garage. the white house says they are simply being transparent, but, again, the transparency didn't seem evident when they didn't tell anybody about this back in november. >> you mentioned that midterm election. we're about a year away from another presidential election. already we have two of the leading candidates under separate federal investigations into handling of classified documents. what are the implications as we head into the next election cycle?

>> well, in some ways there is -- these cases are entirely different. you know, president trump did not voluntarily turn over the documents. he didn't turn them over even when they were subpoenaed when the fbi visited mar-a-lago. one of his lawyers signed a form saying that everything had been turned over, of course, when the search warrant was executed. we saw more than 100 more classified documents that had not been turned over, so the situation is very different. biden seems to be cooperating as this goes along, but it does muddy the waters for a campaign. i mean, the bottom line is that both men seemed to have taken inappropriately classified documents when they left office, biden as vice president, trump as president. >> okay, let's bring maryalice parks back in. the president, he's trying very hard to stay on topic and keep the focus on his priorities. now he's staring down a newly

divided government and a ll ihis afcten e that says it agen? what are you hearing from behind closed doors at the white house? >> reporter: yeah, they're trying to carry on. he travels today to georgia to mark martin luther king day. but, of course, everything they had going last week was overshadowed by this and know the republicans have launched two investigations into the documents alone. the white house is very aware of how politically vulnerable this makes them. but like jon was just saying, it could also be tricky for republicans who have spent a lot of this last year defending president trump's actions with and mishandling of classified information, so if they go too critical on biden, this could backfire for them, as well. eva. >> it will be interesting to see how it plays out. maryalice and jon, thank you both. catch jon later on "this week." he has exclusive interviews with don bacon and adam schiff with more on that discovery of classified documents at president biden's home and office and jon speaks with senator raphael warnock after his runoff victory last month. gio. overseas now to the war in

ukraine and deadly new russian air attacks on an apartment building as western allies promise more tanks and artillery for kyiv. abc's matt gutman has more now from dnipro. matt, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning, gio. civilians killed in attacks across the country, but the strike that all eyes are on in ukraine right now is that apartment block behind me. it is believed that there are still dozens of people missing there. they hope that some of them might still be alive. regardless, this might turn out to be one of the deadliest strikes on a civilian target since the war began. this morning, the desperate search for the missing. sirens wailing throughout ukraine saturday, an all day barrage of russian missiles. a single 13,000-pound missile say ukrainian officials obliterating this entire apartment block. fire roaring from the crater and in the blackened cord yard, you can see cars crumpled by the concussion wave and hear the screams of the wounded and the terrified.

the death toll rising to at least 21. more than 70 wounded and dozens remain missing this morning. a drone zooming over the wreckage, 72 apartments destroyed. hundreds damaged. as night fell, we arrived on the scene. six hours later you get a sense of the power of that missile taking down this entire apartment block shattering the buildings on either side, and still it is smoldering. but in the smashed concrete, glimpses of hope. this young woman crouching with her phone in her destroyed bathroom. another holding a stuffed animal being brought down on the ladder. this entire courtyard which is actually large has been turned into a moonscape. the buildings and every single window, hundreds and hundreds of apartment units, completely shattered. garbage cans flung like they were toys, and right here, that pile there, still working on it. you can smell how acrid that smoke is, and dozens of workers still hoping to find the living in there.

and early this morning, an enforced hush on the search site. rescuers on the pile hearing a voice zeroing in on a survivor and eventually officials say the woman pulled to safety. brutal fighting continuing in the east of the country over the contested towns of soledar and bakhmut, that's considered the bloodiest battle of the war so far, and in a major development, the uk now saying it's going to deliver to ukraine main battle tanks, the first western ally to do that, whit. >> yeah. they've been asking for those tanks for some time now. matt gutman, thank you. now to breaking news. a deadly plane crash in nepal carrying 72 passengers and crew happening in a town popular with tourists. dozens killed and new details just coming in. abc's lama hasan is following the latest from london. lama, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. well, this is undoubtedly one of nepal's worst aircraft disasters with authorities saying at least 68 people are now dead. we're getting dramatic video showing the plane flying low.

and as it's coming in to land suddenly it appears to fly out of control and crashing in a populated area bursting into flames. you can see the aftermath of the crash. thick, black smoke billowing in the air. the prime minister launching an urgent search and rescue operation. here's what we know about the flight. the twin engine 72-seater plane was operated by yeti airlines and carrying 72 people on board. 68 passengers and 4 crew members. the majority were nepalese. there were also a number of foreign nationals on board as well. we know the plane took off at 10:32 from kathmandu. it's just a 25-minute flight and just seconds away from landing at the two-week-old international airport in a resort town. it came down. early data shows it was 15 years old. equipped with an old transponder. so far no details on what may have caused the crash. an investigation is already under way. eva. >> lama hasan for us, thank you.

now to the crisis on the border with mexico. the democratic mayor of new york city traveling there today as he pleads for more federal help for migrants being shipped north. abc's phil lipof joins us with more. good morning to you, phil. >> reporter: good morning to you, eva. mayor adams landed in el paso last night. his trip short but message will be clear. the federal government must fix a broken immigration system. now stressing cities like new york thousands of miles away from the southern border. this morning, new york city mayor eric adams touring the southern border in el paso and asking the federal government for emergency funding for new york city. the mayor speaking this week with caribbean power jam radio. >> i really believe it's irresponsible that we have not had a real national response to what's happening at our border. >> reporter: and new york city ismong o cities asking for similar emergency help. governors from texas, arizona, florida and colorado have been busing migrants out of their states. adams says he can no longer afford to shelter more migrants,

40,000 coming to new york city since the spring, a record 800 in one day, 3,100 last week alone. shelters in new york city at their limits. so this 28-story, 1,300-room luxury hotel is being used to house migrants. some seeking asylum. still, adams says more is needed to house, feed and educate migrants. he says it will cost the city between $1.5 billion and $2 billion and he's only received 10 million in federal aid. >> the strain on our infrastructure is just immense. >> reporter: president biden visiting the border last week meeting with el paso's mayor amid a crisis now not just in border states but across the country as well. as for his schedule today adams plans to visit several spots along the southern border including a known border crossing and an area where migrants sleep. back here in his own state, governor hochul continues to

pledge to help the mayor but wasn't clear with what that means financially. >> thank you very much. we turn to the outrage over a public school student who allegedly wrote a kill list a year ago and is now being sent back to school to join former classmates. abc's em nguyen has more. >> we are calling you to be responsible and do the right thng. >> reporter: this morning, shock and outrage from boone county parents learning a student who allegedly made a kill list is back in their children's school. >> well, i couldn't believe it. my worst fear is that one day after my daughter gets dropped off from school that i get a text over the phone of the school has been locked down and that there are casualties in the school. >> reporter: officials say an eighth grader allegedly made threats last year against several students when he was at conner middle school. at that time superintendent matthew turner and the school board decided to expel him. and now one year later, the student is back in the classroom

at conner high school. a room full of parents voicing frustration at a recent school board meeting. >> it is completely negligent to face a student exhibiting these red flags with our students at conner high school. >> reporter: turner defending his decision, telling abc news, the kentucky constitution guarantees the right to a public education for every child without prejudice. public school districts are not legally permitted to permanently expel a student. we have no reason to believe there is any threat to students or staff. according to a state statute, local school boards can expel students who make threats against others for not less than one year. >> yes, you have to provide a free education, but that does not stipulate that it has to be right back at conner high school. they have plenty of options. >> reporter: parents are on edge especially as k through 12 school shootings have recently skyrocketed. 58 reported in 2017 according to the k to 12 school shooting database. in 2022, there were 302. there are a number of school districts out there that also impose a minimum of one year expulsion for similar incidents

but overall no exact protocol for all states. many school districts have a range of punishments that can range on a case by case basis, whit. >> em nguyen for us, thank you. let's get another check of the weather with danielle breezy. we were taking about the storms out west and rain and flooding but snow a huge part. >> a huge part especially in the sierra. this is mammoth, california, and this is video from there, as you can see. wow, look at that snow coming h ever on retwo tot to mention two to four feet in the rockies. now we're also watching for rain out to the east. we are going to see rain showers that are passing showers along the east coast as we head into tuesday afternoon. but more impressive rain totals coming thursday from that storm system and maybe even a little snow up in new england. we're talking about a widespread probably one to two inches with a bull's-eye of two to three

-- unveiled a moving tribute to dr. king and his family and racial equity in the form of a massive sculpture. abc's mona kosar abdi is here with the details. good morning to you, mona. >> reporter: eva, good morning. making this moment that much more special, the late dr. martin luther king had many notable connections to boston, he met his wife there, he preached there and led a civil rights march right to that very spot where his sculpture now stands. this monument like the iconic figure making history. nearly 60 years after dr. martin luther king jr. addressed thousands at the boston common, the city unveiling a sculpture commemorating the reverend and his wife, coretta scott king. the 20-foot-tall and 40-foot-wide bronze monument, the largest in the u.s. dedicated to racial equity. hank willis thomas is the artist behind the sculpture, affectionately titling it, "the embrace." >> he's hugging her, and you can see her literally holding him up, and it was something that

was so special. >> reporter: thomas is known globally for his work honoring diverse historic figures. >> i'm really excited to be highlighting this very important moment in 1964 when dr. king was awarded the nobel prize because that was really a culmination of over a decade of incredibly hard work that not only dr. king did but mrs. king. >> reporter: the famed king couple's love story began in boston. he was a theology doctoral student at boston university. the $10 million sculpture celebrating their life and the 30-foot tall mlk memorial on the national mall. dr. king's 14-year-old granddaughter honoring her grandparents' legacy. >> i also see the love and stength and unity in these hands and how they symbolize a beautiful marriage and partnership, and it was one that changed the world.

on the field, off the field, on the field, off the field, all the trials and tribulations. we got a strong group. a real family over here. welcome back to "gma" on this sunday morning. damar hamlin making an amazing comeback after suffering cardiac arrest on the field less than two weeks ago. espn posted this photo of the 24-year-old smiling and talking with his fellow teammates at a bills facility yesterday. this is for the first time since his release from the hospital. the bills preparing to face the miami dolphins in a wild card playoff game today. so coming up, we'll have much more on all the super wild card action with espn nfl analyst matt hasselbeck. so great to see hamlin. what a recovery. you can only imagine the bills taking the field today with that extra bit of confidence he is doing well.

let's take a look at the other big stories we're following on this sunday. happening right now, china announcing 60,000 people have died from covid-related illnesses since december when strict pandemic restrictions were lifted nationwide. that number is in sharp contrast with the 37 deaths that had been previously reported. international health experts have accused china of underreporting the severity of the outbreak. also right now, prince harry coming second to no one when it comes to book sales. harry's tell all, "spare," is the fastest selling nonfiction book of all time. the explosive memoir selling more than 1.4 million copies in the u.s., canada and uk on its first day out. harry broke barack obama's record. president obama's book, "a promised land," sold 887,000 copies on its release day. and the "avengers" star jeremy renner updating fans on his recovery by posting this video from his hospital bed while being wheeled into a room saying, i wish you all a special night.

renner's sister telling "people" magazine he is crushing all the progress goals as he recovers from that new year's day snowplow accident. >> so good to see that. >> yeah. all right, and we're going to start this half hour with the lapd releasing body camera video of officers using a stun gun on a man who later died. now, he was related to one of the founders of the black lives matter movement, and abc's faith abubey is in los angeles as his family demands answers. faith, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, gio. keenan anderson was a father and a d.c. area english teacher who was visiting his family here in the los angeles area for the holidays. one relative tells me that she's never seen him as scared as he looked in that police body cam footage. this morning, the family of keenan anderson outraged calling for the los angeles police chief to step down after the 31-year-old english teacher died following this tasing incident with los angeles police.

>> you're trying to kill me. >> reporter: the edited footage released by the lapd begins after a multicar crash. anderson seen walking away from the crash scene and witnesses say he caused it. an officer catching up with him telling him to get out of the st ahe >>an to. >> reporter: p complied with the officer's commands but was, quote, exhibiting erratic behavior. >> your legs crossed. >> don't try to kill me, please? >> who is trying to kill you? >> i had a stunt today. >> reporter: a few minutes later anderson saying he wanted to make sure people could see him. >> i want people to see me. >> sir, okay, you can stay right there then. >> reporter: as more officers arrive, police say anderson attempts to run away. >> turn over on your stomach right now. >> reporter: the lapd says officers tried using their body weight, firm grips and joint locks to subdue him. >> don't george floyd me. >> reporter: but they say anderson kept resisting. >> stop or i'm going to tase

you. >> reporter: the officer eventually discharged the taser. >> i'm going to tase him. >> reporter: using it multiple times. paramedics reportedly treating anderson at the scene before taking him to the hospital. more than four hours later, cardiac arrest while still in the hospital. >> mr. anderson's specimens both tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. >> reporter: law enforcement experts analyzing the police body cam video say the responding officer did try working with anderson. >> i do think he went about it in a very positive fashion. he asked him time and time again to stop and then asked him again to stop resisting then it continued. he did it again each time. >> reporter: a 2017 reuters investigation found that more than a thousand people died across the country after they were tased by police. black lives matter co-founder patrisse cullors who happens to be anderson's cousin calling for the lapd officers involved in her cousin's incident to be held accountable. >> we're supposed to be a

the dolphins/bills game today? >> i kind of think the bills are a team of destiny. the dolphins are dealing with some adversity now, but watch what the buffalo bills have done. they have's come together, and the dolphins team playing without their starting quarterback or running back and i don't think that maters. the bills, they've sort of rallied around their teammate, damar hamlin, who had a scary incident recently and done it on special teams and have one of the best defenses in the nfl and have one of the best quarterbacks in josh allen. if he's not one of the best, if he's not the best quarterback he's at least the most fun to watch, great thrower, can throw it a mile and great runner as well but i'm looking forward to seeing those fans in buffalo clear on their team. >> this last one, don't have much time left, cowboys/bucs. tom brady has never lost to them in his entire career, the cowboys? >> not only has he never lost to to the dallas cowboys. he's never lost to dan quinn,
