5:01 pm
list of storm damage keeps getting longer added this morning the fallen tree in san francisco and the rain isn't done with us yet today. we could even see a thunderstorm spencer is watching it all and spencer no longer. have you downgraded this to a one? it's a level two again. that's right. the united started as a level three this morning a powerful storm and now it's still got a lot of punch to it. so let's take a look at what's going on. you mentioned thunderstorms. we have a batch of thunderstorms that just developed offshore and suddenly started pushing inland one right over the golden gate right now as a matter of fact, so around that area lower marin county and parts of san francisco. we've got downpours and a thunderstorm moving through the area over. on the peninsula from redwood city and san mateo. we had some downpours moving across the bay right now. you can see right over the bridge there a san mateo bridge and widespread downpours in the east bay. this is now a still moderate storm a so for tonight more scattered showers with brief downpours and possibly more isolated.
5:02 pm
storms we expected to weaken later tonight, but at the moment it's still a storm to be concerned about. i'll have more details and the accuweather 7-day forecast a little bit later. yeah. all right, we will watch it closely spencer. thanks now speaking of packing of punch in the north bay the storm toppled trees triggering mud and rock slides causing flooding and power outages abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us live in novato. now where people are adjusting to coping with the aftermax of aftermath of all of this rain cornell. yet deon. i think we're getting used to this but you know, it was a wild weather day for sure all eyes on creeks and rivers. this is nevada creek. it is still rising very fast. and flooding is a concern here and you know today it was definitely a storm to remember. the house shook a little bit and the there was a pretty big explosion from the live wires hitting and a flash. that's what gail coppinger heard
5:03 pm
and saw saturday morning the moment her 150 foot tall cypress trve hay 1 closing the road and knocking at power to a wide swath of west moran is your power out. oh, yeah. i'm gonna go to town against mice most point race station was in the dark for hours, but the bovine bakery found a way to stay open my co-worker he for for and the register, so we had the register going the storm was fierce with heavy wind and rain. check out the intersection of highway 12 and 121 in sonoma. it was closed after runoff from a nearby creek transformed it into a raging rivers a cal fire crew came upon this rock slide on deer park road in napa county and this mudslide closed portions of stage gulch road near petaluma the chp telling drivers. in novato
5:04 pm
flooded roland fewet got stuck trying to drive through. i guess the car just got so wet. it's it stopped. the motor quit running and i couldn't restart it. big trees came down in sonoma county blocking roads around sebastopolt and occidental and this large tree fell in mill valley closing marion avenue first responders say after the rain stops, flooding and mudslide issues may continue. so all the runoff is going to continue to increase water flow. and so that's always a concern within the 24 hours after you know, a significant rain shower like we have the upside of all the january storms plenty of waterfalls and a few rainbows. yeah, well that rainbow didn't stick around very long more showers right behind it. we just learned that power is still out to portions of point race station. the fire department just texted me said it could be midnight
5:05 pm
before power is back on in west moran for live in novato tonight cornell bernard abc 7 news. hey, even with that rainbow lasting just a little bit. we will take that glimpse of happiness when we can. all right, nice stuff cornell thank you. over in san mateo county main road near pescadero is closed after a mudslide take a look at this cal fire posted this amazing video showing part of stage road in your pompano creek. just crumbling in progress down the hillside. there is no estimate on when it'll reopen the good news. nobody was injured. on the peninsula all parks and trails in belmont remain closed tonight for safety concerns belmont police say several trees fell today in heavily wooded twin pines park. over in the east bay heavy rainfall has caused a large tree there to topple onto highway 13 in oakland. now at first the tree was blocking all lanes heading in both directions late this morning there were some delays but that tree has already been removed. and in berkeley parts of claremont avenue were shut down
5:06 pm
today because of several down power lines. you can see a tree just created a big tangled mess and knocked out power to nearly 700 customers. this is at tanglewood road. pg&e says they have restored power in that area. santa cruz county has issued multiple evacuation orders as nearby waterways continue to rise mandatory evacuation orders are issued for low-lying areas and socal village and felt in grove the sheriff's office issued a new evacuation order for areas surrounding cliff drive in aptos and parts of watsonville deputies are going door-to-door now to warn residents to evacuate immediately residents can seek shelter at cabrillo college and the santa cruz county fairgrounds. check the san lorenzo river briefly edged above major flood stage at big tre in the santa cruz mountains according to the national weather service.
5:07 pm
the river reached the major flood stage of 21.8 feet at noon time the river then quickly receded below it by the next reading 15 minutes later. it is currently below the moderate flood stage also here no word on any damage. and a reminder you can always track the rain wind and flooding forecasts on the abc 7 bay area streaming app. we have the latest outlook and live doppler 7 there the abc 7 bay area app is available for your roku apple tv fire tv and google tv devices. right to the other big story the niners have advanced to the nfc divisional round after a wildcard test against the seattle seahawks abc 7 news sports. anchor chris alvarez joins us live now at levi's stadium with the highlights of the 49ers victory chris. i'm surprised you're not jumping up and down with excitement. dan i don't want to slip in the rain, i mean think that's the biggest thing right here the niners actually trail by one at the half and all was a little bit scary and then it was all 49ers.
5:08 pm
they made some big second half adjustments. let's roll the highlights from a somewhat dry levi's stadium during most of the game, but those fans were ready to rock and roll niners trailed, but turn it on and this is a huge play in the game the defense making a play a strip sack and nick bosa recovers defensive coordinator damiko. ryan's loves it and brock party in his first nfl playoff start through three touchdowns this one going to debo samuel 74 yards down the sideline. they score 25 answer to put things away in the second half niners win 41 23, they'll host of playoff game next weekend right here at levi stadium. so the niners will play if the vikings beat the giants tomorrow, they're playing minnesota here obviously date time to be announced later this weekend and if the giants win will be the winner between the cowboys and bucks game, you'll see that on abc 7 on monday. so a little bit to be played out but much more coming up here from levis including reaction and longer highlights from this 49ers win, but a fun day and i'm a little bit under the stadium. so i'm a little dry. yeah, as long as you're not
5:09 pm
under the weather then you know that kind of weather chris. thank you. coming up next governor newsom visits the central valley as the latest atmospheric river hits the state. let's get through this we will get through this and we'll come out the other side more resilient. the governor tries to lift the spirits of people affected by the series of storms and hazards on the coast residents who live near the coast remain anxious. wait. you're a night manager and mom and birthday cake baker? so adding “and” student might feel daunting.

5:12 pm
make smart choices when driving in flood waters newsome also warned people of another atmospheric river in the future. the reality is this is just the eighth of what we anticipate will be atmospheric rivers. we're not done. city and state crews reinforced parts of bear creek in merced yesterday to prepare for today's rainfall. there's been over 22 trillion gallons of water that the state over the past couple of weeks. well happening now the national weather service has issued a beach hazard statement through nine monday morning for the entire central, california coastline north of santa rosa south to big sur. people are warned about storm debris in the water and dangerous waves abc 7 news reporter gloria rodriguez tells us that pacifica today dealt with a triple threat surf wind and flood. the waves have been very intense out here in pacifica a high surf warning was issued this morning
5:13 pm
warning people that say out of the water not to swim or serve because of life-threatening conditions. some still enjoying time outdoors during a break in the rain heavy wind and rain this morning in pacifica as another store moved in. our news truck even shaking at one point and waves getting up to 30 feet tall the first floor of david and distinct chamberlain's home by the pier flooded last week and they were on edge with saturday's storm a lot of trepidation and we're very anxious. we've been watching very carefully. we've sort of been holding a visual here for the waves. we've been watching out the window. it's been nice having a sense the community and local pacificans. whoever neighbors people. we don't know just helping us, so it's really appreciated some parts of beach boulevard near the pier close because of this muddy mess in pacifica, gloria rodriguez abc 7 news.
5:14 pm
well just ahead. don't go to tahoe for the martin luther king holiday weekend. that's the recommendation from the national weather service. and this is why just ahead the main highway that is now closed due to whiteout conditions. i'm spencer christian. we still have some storing weather coming our way this evening before things begin to calm down. i'll have the accuweather forecast in just a moment when abc 7 news at five continues. demi, i'm so proud of you and how you have persevered through your cancer diagnosis. never forget those who loved you so well and know that you have the responsibility to give back. love, dad.

days like today. you can actually hear the soundtrack of the bay area echo from the golden gate bridge the bridge homes, whenever northwesterly winds pass through railings installed in a 2020 wind retrofit project. moving on driving in the tahoe
5:17 pm
area is downright treacherous tonight conditions are so bad a stretch of interstate 80 was even closed take a look people were warned not to drive to the sierra this weekend and some apparently did not listen. we have seen some serious traffic jams and caltrans has closed eastbound 80 at colfax and westbound 80th state line due to those whiteout conditions and you can see or maybe not see zero visibility. there is no estimated reopening time, you know heating the warning is so important as a matter of life and death. it really is people need to take these warning seriously. so this winter storm warning will be an effect until 10 o'clock monday night. we expect three to six feet of snow 36 feet and with the strong gusty winds you mentioned and the whiteout conditions. it's almost impossible to drive there. so just stay home. stay cozy find a fireplace if you can here's the logo what's happening right here in the bay area right now. we've got why spread showers and even some thunder lightning mixing in right now this all developed right rather suddenly
5:18 pm
in the last half hour, so and we had a thunderstorm sell passing right over the golden gate just a moment ago. you can see it is pouring in southern marin county and down into parts of san francisco as well and all around the bay area right now. we have some scattered down for us. so only exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale this storm now ranks level two a moderate storm. it was an even stronger storm level three this morning. so for this evening, we expect more showers, brief downpours isolated thunderstorms are possible. here's the forecast animation starting at 6 o'clock this evening notice. this is going to this current wave will pass through rather quickly by eight nine o'clock or so things will seem a lot calmer, but we'll still have scattered showers and the possibility of more of them developing is who get into the late night hours, so it's not over yet. just be prepared if you're going out the flood watch that has been in effect for so long for the bay area remains in effect until 4 pm monday the is just so saturated any bit of rain we get can of course produce more flooding now. we had a wind advisory earlier today that has been canceled
5:19 pm
now, however, we still have some pretty gusty winds at places like sfo nearly 30 miles per hour 20 miles per hour at san mateo and 25 mile per hour gusts at hayward in the sierra as dion and i were just discussing we're to storm warning in effect until 10 pm. monday heavy snow. not only possible but likely we're expecting totals of three to six feet wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour difficult or impossible to travel there. here's a live view from the exploratorium camera looking back at the skyline of san francisco current temperature readings in a very narrow range mid-50s at san francisco oakland, palo alto, san jose, santa clara 52 at half moon bay and the view of the golden gate where the rain drops are obscuring our view on the camera lens there, but it's wet at the golden gate right now other temperature eatings in the low to mid 15 santa rosa novato napa fairfield conquered and a little more and here's a view from our ro camera looking across the embarcadero where it's also wet as most places are right now for this evening. well, this is actually our
5:20 pm
forecast headlines beyond this evening scatter showers downpours this evening another round of showers tomorrow sunny or dryer pattern beginning monday overnight lows will be mainly in the mid-top for 40s highest tomorrow. generally the mid-50. he's not much of a range there and here's our forecast animation picking up sunday morning notice another wave of rain coming in sunday evening into monday morning then a little bit of a break but as you get later into the week, we get lots of clearing so that takes us to the accuweather seven-day forecast which shows that we have some sunny days coming our way beginning midweek and certainly going into next weekend but a few rounds of rain will move in one on martin luther king jr. day monday and another brief one on wednesday. at their son we can get we're gonna get a lot near the end of next week. thanks. deon c niners kickoff super wild card weekend here on a rainy saturday at levi's and after a slow start. it's a second half surge. they put seattle to sleep night night sports is next.

chris alvarez welcome to levi's stadium and super wild card weekend the 49ers hosting the seahawks looking to beat them for a third time this season and get their 11 straight win. overall. remember they close out the regular season with 10 in a row to the highlights brock party looking become the first last pick in the nfl draft at quarterback to start a playoff game. niners can run the ball during the regular season in seattle today. no different christian mccaffrey the third longest run in 49ers playoff history 68 yards and into the red zone and they

finish that drive when brock purdy extends the play and then finds cmac for the touchdown 10 of the niners in a hurry, but seattle would respond and they would do so with geno smith up top to dk metcalf on third and three seattle the 17-6 second quarter push to actually lead by one at the break seattle and never lost a playoff halftime lead under pete carroll, but things would change because the niners made adjustments responding in the second half get it to debo samuel in third and seven 21 yards tempers flaring that niners longest drive by time this season 7 minutes 45 seconds cap by that pretty sneaking an end 2317 san francisco and then the defense stepping up seattle was moving the ball. well until charles omena who strips sack and there is nick bosa give him defensive player of the year right now though faithful. we're jumping seahawks fans the 12s they were stun in suing dry pretty to elijah mitchell who's gonna high step it. ends a look at purdy's elusiveness to get away from the

tackle third touchdown past the day they went for two 31 17 and then purdy finding debo who's in a jet down the sidelines 74 yards the longest play of his career and for the niners offense on the day 25 unanswered points to put things on ice niners win 41 23 we don't want today to be our last day with this team and but that is the reality of the playoffs. she all you got guaranteed is three and a half hours. once we clinched earlier this year up there, you know, we knew we were guaranteed the playoffs. so those kind of the first feeling that we've had in a while like well if we don't handle our business this week this week, so the season's over and we love this team for a number of reasons, and i'm glad we got another week. so that's the thing about the nfl playoffs dion. you have a bad day. you're seasoning can end. the nighters is moving on. we'll wait and see who they play will find out later this weekend deon. yeah, he just never know. all right, chris. thank you, and we are counting down to monday nights nfc wildcard game between the buccaneers and the cowboys like
