i open the window and water was just gushing in the. >> businesses spend the day cleaning up after flash flooding sweeps through the bay area we will take a look at the damage. and sacramento is swamped by deadly flooding, dozens are rescued from submerged cars. the reason the water is so high in this area. >> the previous one we felt a good jolt, this one felt like it rolled on forever. >> that's the police chief in humboldt county or a city is hit with an earthquake for the second time in as many weeks. abc7news at five is next. here. >> to the taillight? >> yeah.

>> one particular part of san francisco it suffered significant damage during yesterday's downpour, we went to city officials to find out why that area got hit so hard. good evening and thank you for joining us. the bay area isg and drying out today after the new year's eve storm dumped near historic amounts of rain. news repte cornell bernard spoke with business owners in san francisco who said clogged storm drains created a raging river in the mission. >> there is an epic happening inside this restaurant on 14th st in san francisco's mission neighborhood this was the eatery before the new year's eve storm. and this was after. the moment heavy rains brought at least three to 4 feet of floodwater rushing in. >> we started noticing the water started to pull on the street and probably within 20 minutes it was coming in the front. >> the owner says and his staff was preparing bento boxes for new year's when things spiraled

into an emergency after wooden floodgates failed. >> we have half of us standing into chest deep water to wade out it was pretty crazy. >> his restaurant was anchored in the street but now as you can see it is up on the sidewalk after nearly floated away. this person spotted floating down 14th st, watch as the floodwater busts through the door of this establishment. this motorcycle storage business was quickly underwater. >> within 15 minutes the garage door busted, cracked and water started pouring in. this place was full and half an hour. >> a big cleanup underway, damage estimates are unknown. rainbow grocery was flooded, a

sign on the door telling customers the store was closed. employees dressed in ppe were cleaning up inside. how would you describe the damage inside? >> i would say this is the worst flood we have seen here and we have flooded before. >> we are sanitizing and doing a lot of deep cleaning. escape. >> the car is totally flooded inside, the under lights were flashing and things so i don't know if it is going to be fixable. >> many business owners blame storm drains for not working properly after more than 5 inches of rain fell in the city but the san francisco public utilities commission telling abc news in this area clogged catch basins were not a cause of the flooding rather this was an extreme weather event that exceed exceeded the capacity of any system. in san francisco abc7news. >> in addition to the flooding

parts of san francisco are buried in mud, take a look at this muddy mess that covered lanes of the highway near sea cliff. the san francisco fire department says the hillside is unstable and rocks continue to slide. the road is closed with no expected reopening date. and another slipping hillside caused a muddy mess i corona heights park, while it does not appear any of the equipment was damaged the park is now closed due to safety concerns. storm damage also shut down the randall museum in corona heights, stone grove and pine lake. no word on when any of those locations will reopen. though the rain has stopped for now flooding the fears remain a serious concern in the south bay, santa clara county officials say their reservoir is likely to over spell by tomorrow morning. they urged people who live downstream to evacuate now. people are asked to avoid the reservoir especially along the stretch of highway 101 think you were right. park rangers spent new year's day inspecting trails creeks and

roads in san mateo county, runoff from yesterday's rain continue to flow downstream and many streams and creeks remain above flood levels. several areas were closed due to flooding including coyote point, unit pero sarah and sawyer pam. people are also being warned to stay away from beaches after sewage concerns, san mateo county has closed all beaches and the county now advises people to avoid swimming in the ocean and bay for at least three days after the rain ends and the water is tested. crews are responding to mudslides, rock slides and road collapses across the bay area today, take a look for half of redwood road crumbled on the hillside in castro valley. storm related issues also shut down 580 yesterday in alameda county. it is now back open but even so it stretches of highway 35 in woodside and fremont were closed today due to downed power lines and flooding.

over in santa cruz county battering rain is blamed for this large sinkhole in glen haven road near soquel. highway nine is closed north of santa cruz after a number of mudslides slept -- swept over the road there. there is no estimated reopening time in the first confirmed storm-related death has been reported in santa cruz for a 72-year-old person died at lighthouse field state beach yesterday after being struck by a fallen tree. we did get to dry out a little today, we saw the sun as well but abc7news meteorologist is standing by saying we should be prepared for rain tomorrow and i think everyone is wondering if it is going to be just as bad as yesterday. >> yeah in fact we have several storms on the way i want to show you live doppler 7. we can enjoy this brief break but clouds are moving in for a system tomorrow. we talked about all the devastation we saw yesterday, yesterday in san francisco we had 5.4 to 6 inches of rain.

that is the second wettest day we have had on record in san francisco. in oakland it would be the all-time record for rain at 4.75 inches and redwood city at 4.7 inches had their third wettest day ever. for tomorrow it is going to be a level 1, light to moderate rain generally less than half an inch for most everybody. but i need to tell you about another atmospheric weather system coming with the accu seven-day forecast coming up shortly. >> we are bracing ourselves thanks. you can also get the latest forecast and weather updates any time on the abc7news streaming app it is available for roku, apple tv, fire tv devices. a second earthquake shook part of humboldt county just two weeks after the area suffered quick damage. a 5.4 magnitude quake h about 10:30 this morning near red crest that is about 30 miles south of rio dell. it is said that shaking is felt as far north as oregon.

the rio dell police department shared this video with us where you can see that lobby shaking during today's quake. power is out in parts of the city which was hit by last month's earthquake. the police chief says they are now dealing with new damage. >> some of the damage i have seen, a couple houses are off their foundations. we have some huge cracks and some of our streets. a lot of windows broken from some of the businesses and homes. and right now we are still assessing the damage for the city. >> today's quake follows a 6.4 magnitude shaker on december 20. you may remember near ferndale, that is blamed for two deaths and 11 injuries, it caused widespread damage to homes and roads and knocked out power and water to tens of thousands of people. the rain was so severe in sacramento that the city is under winter storm state of emergency, rising creeks and rivers are swallowing up roads. we will take a look at some of the rescues and what city officials claim for all of the

from disabled vehicles. the driver of this chevy tahoe was one of dozens who had to be rescued, a fire truck was able to negotiate the floodwaters along twin cities road and bring that driver to safety. a helicopter attempted a second rescue nearby but the pilot decided it was too risky. >> but it could be many more hours before the roads are clear. more than 31,000 customers remain without power this afternoon down from 145,000 after winds toppled trees. rain is forecasted to return tomorrow with another storm expected on wednesday and thursday. one of the founding members of the legendary r&b group the pointer sisters has died, i need a pointer passed away saturday at her home in los angeles where she was surrounded by family. she and her three sisters began

about the snow and the rain, this rowing club braved the ice cold waters of the bay to continue their annual tradition. it dozens of swimmers made the mile and a half trip from alcatraz to aquatic park in san francisco. participants range in age from 18 to 70. everyone had to take part in a qualifier before hand ensuring they are capable of handling the swim. a team of volunteers were also available to make sure everyone made it back safely. this week the state will assess just how much of an impact these storms are having on the water supply. on tuesday the department of water resources will conduct the first snow survey of the season. our media partners at the bay area news group report the sierra is close to the second largest snowpack it has seen in the last two decades. that is with more snow expected in coming days. the snow is measured to forecast the amount of water that will melt and run off to state reservoirs. yesterday's storm has delivered

a gorgeous start to the new year at palisades ski resort in tahoe but it is also delaying business. resort has received 3 feet of new snow in the last two days officials say despite the new snow they expect to be slow to open both palisades and alpine meadows. a message on their website says expect an impact to operations today as we dig out. more on the timeline for us in the impending rain and francis looking at the possible three on the storm impact scale. >> definitely another atmospheric pressure heading our way wednesday into thursday, right now you can enjoy the weather that has been clear and we have some clouds moving in. that is going to increase overnight but check out this beautiful view from emeryville as we look at toward san francisco and across the bay. temperatures are mainly in the upper 50's so it did warm up with more sunshine today and san francisco it is 56, oakland 59 cooler in half moon bay at 52.

this time i'm showing you a view from mount tam because it looks lovely. it santa rosa it is 58 and we see concord and livermore in the mid to upper 50's. tomorrow is going to be very different, we have a cold fast-moving system coming in and on our storm impact scale it is a one out of five it so it is a light storm. the rain will be heaviest midday through evening and generally less than half of an inch for everybody. we could see up to an engine some of the higher elevations so here's the timing of how it plays out tomorrow morning we will wake up to lots of cloud cover. the rain will start to move in, the heaviest rain you see here especially in the north bay at orange and red, that's the more moderate rainfall in the north bay and then we have heavier rain sweeping through the peninsula but noticed it quickly clears and is gone by tuesday. another great day and we have a chance to dry out before the atmospheric river. here are the rainfall estimates for your neighborhood. you can see generally less than half an inch, and san francisco

.43 inches and a little more and half moon bay. in brentwood and young fellow about a quarter of an inch. tomorrow morning we will wake up to a lot of the cloud cover, pretty chilly in the north bay some upper 30's there and lots of low to mid 40's in the bay in the afternoon it will be much cooler and generally we will be near mid-50's for almost everybody, only in the upper 40's. it is going to feel very cold tomorrow and you will want your winter coats out. in addition to that there is a winter weather advisories or not a good time to go to and from tahoe. they will be getting more snow that starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow through 4 a.m. tuesday that will be not a good time to drive it will be difficult five to 10 inches above 5000 feet in about two to 6 inches above 3000 so chain controls are possible and likely. here's the atmospheric river coming in wednesday all the way through thursday. were going to have solid rain thursday at the heaviest will be wednesday afternoon into thursday morning. it rainfall estimates generally
