from emergency crews for those heading out to see the fireworks. thank you and we appreciate you joining us lots going on tonight due to the weather and we are covering all angles for you with life team coverage bay area wide. detailing the many issues people are dealing with, our live doppler 7 is tracking that rain and that is where we begin. with our weather anchor spencer christian and the good news we are drying out a little bit. >> mainly right now the rain is tapered off to a drizzle but still lots of rain falling in other parts of the bay area here is live doppler 7, let us switch over to the east bay where antioch and discovery bay are getting a drenching. down on interstate 680 and 580 and out towards 20 five around the altamonte in livermore it is raining heavily and over on the

peninsula from san mateo to san carlos to redwood city to woodside we have got a drenching downpour and a flood watch remains in effect for virtually the entire bay area. let's take a look at our exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale which indicates this is a level two storm so although it is tapering off in the north bay heavy rain will still fall periodically, widespread flooding will remain after the rain has ended and shallow landslides are possible. i will be back a little later with that timeline on when we can expect clearing and if we will see fireworks later tonight. >> now to the severe and widespread impact of all that rain. so much so it put lives at risk in forcing emergency crews to rescue people from floodwaters using kayaks like in danville. our abc 7 news reporter spoke with a number of families that needed help today, talk about dramatic.

san ramon valley firefighters had to use a kayak to help this mom and her six-month-old get out of her house. >> i felt that we were not going to be rescued. >> her and her daughter just moved to danville this year, she came to pick up the family that will take them to her house. >> he loves the fire trucks. it's an adventure for him. >> nelson says their garage already has flooding, he is just glad he and his family got out when they did. >> this is not what we are expecting whatsoever. i started cleaning out the drains early this morning multiple hours ago and thought i was making a difference for a little bit and then all of a sudden just too much water was coming down.

>> firefighters say several blocks of this danville neighborhood are impacted, this man took video of this suv floating across the street. >> there is a ford excursion one block away that is up above its axles in the water, i saw another floating down the street. even with a ford excursion you are not getting out of this. >> fire officials say this is not typical for danville, the fire chief says there was just too much water for the drainage system to handle. >> any and all creeks right now are over flooded and so anything that was a small creek is now turned into this. >> now the floodwater has recited but you can see another car got stuck on this street and fire officials want to remind everybody if you see flooded roads not to drive through it, you can see two cars now stuck and your car can also stall. reporting live in danville abc 7 news.

>> a great reminder and we are glad to see you dry and safe. some people in were also cut off half moon bay by rising water, firefighters helped evacuate people from flooded homes, calfire says everyone is safe and no one was injured. flooding also a serious problem and leading to roadway rescues across the bay, here is a look at some caltrans camera's showing road conditions today inundated by rain. in san rafael, walnut creek and 101 in san jose. abc 7 news reporter tara campbell joins us in san francisco with information about the flooding and closure of highway 101, this caused quite a mess. >> dion i'm down on the embarcadero right now where in just a few hours the sky will be lighting up with fireworks and the fire department says despite what has been a demanding day the show will go on.

heavy rains creating treacherous road conditions saturday in san francisco, highway 101 blocked in countless spots. >> we are asking the public if you do not have to be driving do not be out on the streets driving your car. >> flares going up at this entrance while water rushes over the road. and at this entrance at cesar chavez a downed tree backing people up. at oyster point floodwaters closing a portion of 101 completely. and captain jonathan baxter says stranded cars like this are cause for some of the most concern. >> how many locations have you been to to rescue people stranded in the cars? >> we have been to hundreds so far. >> one vehicle after another, one rescue at a time. >> when i say we that is collective for san francisco, our fire department, paramedics, police department, sheriff's department, public works department, sewer department, everyone is out.

>> officials asking people to take caution in this wet weather. >> we say turn around, do not drown. puddles of water can be very deceiving and if you drive into a puddle it can quickly overcome your vehicle as we can see behind me and in many circumstances and examples throughout the day. >> if you are planning to drive down here this evening for the fireworks, the captain has another request. do not even attempt getting in your vehicle till at least 7:00 when the storm should be moving out. >> certainly much safer that way. san francisco fire rescued a driver at marina boulevard near marina green today. that incident happened on the 500 block of marina boulevard. officials say that driver will be ok, streets have been blocked off in the area and multiple houses have experienced heavy flooding. you can also see an overflow of water bubbling up from storm drains.

firefighters said the water main broke because there was too much water and fire officials say people can expect traffic delays and should consider taking alternate routes. on the peninsula standing waters continue to impact multiple cities. belmont police rescued a passenger from a submerged car that was stuck under a bridge at harbor and old county. san mateo county sheriffs have closed off the area to vehicle and foot traffic one resident had to clear out nearly 1 foot of water that entered his apartment. san mateo residents were shocked when a creek near arroyo court flooded a car and nearby business. >> we have been living here for about three years and we have never seen this flood. >> redwood city w impacted as workers were seen cutting down a tree to clear a roadway. winslow street from holland to ripple is flooded with half a

foot of water. pounding rain also battered the north bay, our live team coverage continues with cornell barnard in mill valley, that water got a little too close to some homes? >> a day to remember, the last day of 2022 has been wet and has been wet and stressful for many in the north bay with floodwaters rising very fast, >> happy new year. >> it is not the new year's eve rachel and her family planned after floodwater from the storm inundated parts of los angeles boulevard. >> i was woken at about 7:20 with a knock on the door. i was figuring it was pg&e may be a downed power line, it happened to be my neighbor telling me we needed to move our cars immediately. because it was flooding in the front which is right there. >> rachel showed us how close the water came to her front door. in mill valley steady rain brought trouble for storm drains.

>> a lot of water here. >> ted was keeping a close eye on this and other drains overwhelmed by the powerful storm. >> we are on a floodplain and it is a high tack so it's going to happen. whether the drains are clean or not. just bad timing. >> he says he was worried about flooding on armstrong avenue and he was trying his best to clear the debris. >> it's going to get worse. if it keeps writing like this -- raining like this it's going to get worse. it's going to go up the street and up the driveways and we will be flooded. >> in napa county caltrans crews were working to remove this fallen tree on highway 29 in calistoga firefighters say the driver of a car collided with the tree. luckily no injuries. in sonoma county the intersection of 121 and highway 12 was closed it was underwater a detour in place for drivers but greg larson did not mind a bit. he is happy for the rain.

trees are falling across the bay area due to saturated soil, and it a massive tree came crashing down and landed on the contra costa trail. the person who took this video said if it had gone the other direction it would have landed on houses. the city also experienced road flooding, a stretch of walnut boulevard was shut down this morning due to that flooding. this is a live look new york times square as the countdown intensifies. it is the first capacity new year's eve event since 2019. celebrations will kick off with the traditional ball drop in times square made up of 2700 waterford crystals is ready for the countdown. at the stroke of midnight a ton of confetti will rain down >> it is only here in new york city that you see this times square waterford crystal ball and all those people kissing filled with

his role in 2013, it was the first time a pope has resigned in almost 600 years. he said he did not have the strength to lead the catholic church after facing years of scandal and disdain. pope francis will celebrate his funeral mass on thursday, it is the first for a current pope to honor a former one's life. abc world news has been taking a look back on his papacy. legendary news when barbara walters is being remembered this weekend. she died at home in new york last night surrounded by loved ones, she was 93 years old. walters broke barriers with abc news as the first woman to anchor an evening news program. she would later become the cohost of 2020, and launched the view in 97. walters was known for her interviews with everyone from world leaders to celebrities. a special edition of 20/20 airs here on abc tomorrow night at eight and abc news live presents

down where that flood watch has disappeared or ended. here's a live view from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero where it is wet, the rain has stopped for right now. 51 to 52° at all of these locations, oakland, palo alto, san jose and half moon bay. here is a view at the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza, the pavement is still wet and traffic is moving slowly. it does not appear to be raining there right now temperature readings right on the low 50's in santa rosa, novato, napa conch card and 50° in livermore. one more live view from highway 101 and san jose, it is what they're still raining. these are our forecast features, the rain will end in all parts of the bay area this evening and we will have some clearing later tonight, maybe early enough for the fireworks, dry tomorrow as new year's day sunshine will be with us and we will have more storms arriving next week. the abc 7 exclusive storm impact

scale indicates this evening's storm is a level two, heavy rain will taper off and we will expect widespread local flooding after that. a possibility of shallow landslides. starting it 6:30 we think most of the rain will have ended but in the next couple hours we will see skies beginning to clear giving way to clear skies later tonight as we head into the new year arrival. wind gusts will be strong at the coast and inland areas out near the delta through tomorrow with the saturated soil the winds could blow over trees and winter storm warnings are still in effect for the sierra. at low temperatures tonight mainly in the low to mid 40's, highest tomorrow in the mid to upper 50's and here is the accuweather 7-day forecast. dry day tomorrow but brain returns on a chilly storm on monday than a break from the rain on tuesday but more rain will follow into the end of next week. warriors ended 2022 and a happy
