good morning, america. this morning, will this be the worst day yet in the historic heat wave? that epic heat dome is going out with a bang, causing flooding, high winds. sending your food prices soaring. and today could be the hottest of them all. our ginger zee is all over the story. walking free. george zimmerman is once again a free man this morning, released after posting $1 million in bail. where did he get all that money? tom's side. tom cruise's lawyer going public for the first time. what does tom think about the sudden divorce? and we get our first glimpse of his strategy to keep custody of 6-year-old suri. and the comeback. will serena williams go from the bottom of her career -- >> i literally almost died. >> -- to a big win at wimbledon this morning? can she take the top prize?

♪ the comeback ♪ you're liking the music this morning. >> that is one of my favorite songs, our executive producer, matt, picked that song. kudos to you. welcome back, bianna golodryga. >> thank you. happy to be back. >> nice to have you back. >> a quick vacation. man, i've come back to a lot of news this morning. a lot of news this week. >> yeah. >> hello, everybody. it's saturday, july 7th. disappointing jobs numbers yesterday. another disappointing number we had. 69,000 created in may. 80,000 last month. it's jump-started the race for the white house. both sides coming out swinging. analysts saying these numbers could be the defining turning point of the race. we're going to get further into that coming up. >> tough dynamic for the president. plus, it was one of the most sensational trials in recent history. the case of scott peterson. they made made-for-tv movies about this case. he was convicted of killing his wife and their unborn son.

this morning, a big new development. there could be a round two in this story. we have all had heated political discussions over the dinner table with our families. for brad pitt, those fights are going public. his mother coming out against president obama and gay marriage. she's not mincing words. directly challenging a lot of what her son is championing. it's a fascinating story you're going to want to see coming up. >> he cannot be too pleased by these developments. first, this morning, just as we're running out of ways to say it's hot. just as normally mind-blowing maps like this one have become blaring reminders of the blazingly obvious. the end is finally in sight. now, we have new problems, including this -- violent storms and rising food prices, of all things. abc meteorologist ginger zee, who has been on this story for eight days straight is once again melting in central park. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, dan. the other thing we keep doing is getting bigger thermometers as the days go on. i can't handle another day, i won't be able to hold it.

the temperature here if central park already above 80 degrees. this is the actual observation, close to 80. i've gotta tell you. it's not the heat. it's the added humidity. it's the swampy feel that makes the difference. i'm not one to overblow a story. but this is going to be legendary. a summer scorcher and severe storms from the rockies to the south. torrential rains flooding denver streets. a thunderstorm lighting up the sky in minneapolis. and in florence, alabama, a wind storm ripped the roof off this high school. with heat warnings and advisories in 22 states this morning, 115 million people are baking nationwide. in pittsburgh, at a campaign event for president obama, over a dozen people were treated for heat exhaustion. >> i know it's hot. >> reporter: near linwood, wisconsin, firefighters battling a brush fire passed out. more than 4500 record highs have

been broken in just the past 30 days. in washington, d.c., 95 for the ninth straight day on friday, the longest streak ever recorded. st. louis, 102 degrees. their ninth straight day at 100-plus. that's the second longest stretch in history. and chicago, three straight days above 100. first time since 1947. still, eight days later, no relief from the heat for the 150,000 without power following last week's powerful storms. another casualty, our nation's crops. only 48% of the country's corn crop is in good or excellent condition. that sent corn prices soaring. 37% since june 16th. food and commodity prices are expected to rise as much as 3.5% beginning late this year. what that means to you -- higher prices for things like meat, dairy, cereals, and baked goods. a lot of statistics for you.

the man charged with killing trayvon martin made bail thanks to online donations. the rules have changed since last time he was out on bail. matt gutman has the details from florida. >> reporter: that's right. the judge imposing the million-dollar bail and stricter restrictions on zimmerman. laying it out in an eight-page ruling. saying that zimmerman cannot leave the county. he cannot go anywhere near the airport. must wear a gps device at all times. all of this will make it more difficult to secure him. you saw him wearing the bullet-proof vest. underneath that suit the other day. all this still as money coming into his defense fund, $20,000 since the judge's ruling. the judge saying zimmerman hid $150,000 from the court and the fact that he had taken out a second passport, all leading the judge to believe that george zimmerman would have attempted to flee the country and prosecution had he only been given the chance. jim? >> matt gutman in miami, thank you. afghanistan is officially a friend of the united states. the diplomatic language is major

non-nato ally. secretary of state hillary clinton arrived in kabul this morning to make the announcement. it's a statement of support for afghanistan's future and promising military help after combat troops are withdrawn in 2014. clinton says progress is coming slowly but surely to the country. new details in the death of robert kennedy jr.'s estranged wife, mary. an autopsy revealed she had three antidepressants in her blood when she committed suicide in may, but no alcohol. her family says she fought depression her whole life. she married robert kennedy jr. in 1994. he filed for divorce two years ago. in medical news, another reason to enjoy parenthood. a new study finds that having children may boost your immunity to the common cold. parents are about half as likely to be sick when exposed to viruses as those without kids. researchers are not sure why. but there is some fine print, so

you can start sneezing, bianna. a parent still catches as many colds overall because those children bring more viruses back into the house. >> i'm trying to figure out if those are actors or -- >> i'm getting sick watching the coughing montage. and finally, paying off your mortgage must be a good feeling. i'd like to do it one day. for one massachusetts man, it's especially memorable. thomas dagle made his final bank payment in pennies. 62,000 of them, weighing more than 800 pounds. he got the idea when he bought his house 35 years ago. he's been collecting copper ever since. his only concern was he would die before the big payoff. that, of course, is a reason to live. >> oh, good for him, what a fun story. >> in an age of anger at the banks, this is a good way to get back at them. a mass movement. >> a lot of pennies. thank you. we turn to what may be a turning point in the race for president. it's "your voice, your vote." and those new jobs numbers adding a lot of fuel to the campaign. the u.s. economy added only 80,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.2%.

the president on the defensive. david kerley is following it all from washington. good morning, david. >> reporter: hey, bianna. it sure didn't take long for romney to come off vacation and go on the attack. the president tried to make the case that despite the serious slowdown in jobs, the economy is still adding jobs. it didn't take long for the two candidates to respond. or use the new jobs report. >> it's still tough out there. we have to grow the economy faster and put more people back to work. >> we have seen the jobs report this morning. and it is another kick in the gut to middle class families. >> reporter: here's what's happened. in the first three months, good job growth. in the last three months, call it lackluster. >> the economy is recovering. but it's a slow, faltering, frustrating economy. >> reporter: on a bus tour through the key swing state of ohio, president obama is arguing that more needs to be done. when he said this about the anemic job growth -- >> it's a step in the right direction. >> reporter: -- mitt romney pounced.

saying 80,000 jobs created is no step in the right direction, not even keeping up with population growth. >> american families are struggling. there's a lot of misery in america today. these numbers understate what people are feeling and the amount of pain which is occurring in middle class america. >> reporter: romney put the pause button on his vacation in new hampshire to make these statements. there he has a big speedboat, a jet ski, and on friday took a dive into the lake. the night before, president obama was diving into a couple of beers, trying to stress his blue collar background with campaign supporters. >> cheers. >> reporter: he spoke of his vacations when he was growing up where they often stayed at howard johnson's. >> you were excited to go where the vending machine and the ice machine was and get the ice. that was, like, a big deal. >> reporter: not bad talking about ice during a heat wave. there with just four more jobs

reports before the election. the president has to hope for improvement, or he'll not only have to beat mitt romney, he'll have to beat is ita statistic -t no president has been re-elected with unemployment over 8%. bianna? >> thank you, david. let's bring in matthew dowd with more. matthew, great to see you this morning. thank you so much for joining us. >> thanks, bianna. great to see you. >> with just four jobs reports left before the election, does the election hang on the economy? >> well, yeah, the dominant issue in this race has been and will continue to be the economy, which is wrapped up in a lot of things. what money people have available. it's a huge thing about jobs. every time one of these reports coming out, and i think we have four left -- one will come out right before election day -- they're an indication for the country of where the country is headed. that, as it stays unchanged or looks lackluster, it's a problem for the president or it's normally been a problem for the president. the president right now, as david said, is at a point in time that no president's gotten re-elected. if you look at the direction of

the country, it's at a point where no president's gotten re-elected. if you look at consumer confidence, it's at a point where no president has been re-elected. for some reason, he leads or is tied in the polls, still, even with all those factors. >> i was struck by something in your column yesterday. you said that voters no longer think that politicians can fix the economy. yet they continue to blame presidents when the economy is weak. how do you explain the disconnect? >> well it's interesting to me. it's less and less people -- because we have been in a situation, wages have been stagnant for more than ten years. an unemployment rate at 8% or higher for so long, voters are more and more thinking that a president can't do much about it or they see that they can't have much of an effect on it. it's an important decision in their tool belt to make about a president. the problem for mitt romney, i think less and less they're blaming a president or putting responsibility on a president. which is why, with all the factors i mentioned, president

obama is still leading or is tied. if you looked at it normally, he should be losing the race at this point in time. >> and we could still things change with what is going on if europe and in washington, all the gridlock there. we have to leave it there, matt. thank you so much. >> great. >> coming up tomorrow on abc's "this week" rival governors debate the state of the economy. and the presidential race. the guests? louisiana republican bobby jindal and democrat martin o'malley from maryland. dan? now to a mystery potentially solved. it's the case of mickey shunick. the college senior who disappeared while riding her bike home from a friend's house. this morning, police say surveillance video -- this surveillance video right here has helped them solve part of the mystery. bazi kanani is on the case. good morning to you, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, dan. police say they've invested an extraordinary amount of time and resources to this investigation, which help. ed them make an arrest. they say they're not done until they find mickey shunick. what they now believe they will find, the family is not ready to

accept. we now know these surveillance pictures showing mickey riding her bicycle home the night she was last seen and a white chevy pickup on the same road were key to making an arrest in this case. 33-year-old brandon laverne, a registered sex offender, is in jail this morning, accused of first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. notice shunick on her bike near the traffic sign and then the white truck at the same spot. the police chief says laverne was in that truck directly behind the 21-year-old college student. >> based on the information we have, maybe he was riding around, maybe looking for someone to victimize. >> reporter: investigators say after releasing these images to the public, someone called in a tip about the truck that was found burned in texas. it was registered to laverne. who was arrested on thursday. a week after shunick disappeared on may 19th, her bike was found underneath this bridge. investigators say they have

evidence that laverne was in this area, too. and police now confirm that the damage to the back tire was consistent with the bike being hit by a vehicle. they do not believe it was an accident. >> we will not rest until we can fully know what happened to her. >> reporter: police say laverne refuses to talk about what happened. they accuse him of killing shunick, though they don't know where her body might be. >> obviously, the police have other evidence that would link him to this murder. >> reporter: for nearly two months, shunick's family and friends have been searching for her. despite the evidence that the detectives have gathered and the arrest of an alleged murderer, her family is not ready to give up. her family released statement saying they remain hopeful she'll be found alive. they say all they want is to get their girl back and say that remains their sole focus at this time. so this is not the development in the case that they were hoping for. >> no, not at all. >> thank you, bazi. time to check on the weather. we go to ginger zee. out in central park.

is it fair to say it's hot out there? >> it is hot. yes, we touched on that at the top of the broadcast with my enormous thermometer. i won't bring that out again. but what we will do is we'll get to the severe forecast. temperatures will drop 30 degrees in some places in the next couple of days. i want to show you what happens when you get that big temperature drop, you're also going to get severe storms. places that need to be alert today, pittsburgh, philadelphia, new york city. and d.c. by tomorrow, that front slowly makes its way south. that's where the threat will still exist. i want to finally leave you with a look at one of the other parts you may want to know about. some of the wildfires getting some help. moisture pumping up in denver. top of the broadcast, you saw the flooding. that is welcome in a lot of those places in the western states.

>> seattle is actually getting a little bit of summer. i'll talk more about that coming up. back to the studio. >> all right, ginger, thank you. this morning, we may see one of the most amazing comebacks in sports. serena williams, a champion tennis player, said she felt she was near death two years ago. reeling from injuries she thought she would never bounce back from. today, she could win her fifth wimbledon title. and espn's hannah storm is covering the tournament from london and joins us live this morning. good morning, hannah. >> bianna, it's nice to see you. nice to have you back from vacation, as we'll bring you all on a journey to the all-england club here later on. it will be serena williams

battling with little-known aga radwanska for a fifth wimbledon title. the williams sisters have been so dominant here. winning 9 of the last 12, venus and serena. they've been such a constant presence that you almost forget -- almost forget what she has been through. all of that ordeal that would make a victory today the most precious of them all. ♪ little could serena williams have known, just days after winning her fourth wimbledon title, the chain of events that would plunge her future into uncertainty. she severed a tendon in her right foot leaving a munich restaurant leading to two surgeries. then, in february 2011, blood clots in her lung. a pulmonary embolism. forcing her to be rushed to the hospital. >> i literally almost died. i have -- part of my lung has been destroyed.

it's the most arduous journey i have ever been on. >> reporter: the recovery took months. >> i just remember thinking how miserable i was. and how hard -- how hard it was. and like, why -- stuff like -- why things kept happening to me. >> reporter: after almost a year away from the sport, her comeback was unsteady. fourth round losses at wimbledon last summer and australia last winter. an upset loss in the final of the u.s. open. and a shocking first round defeat at the french. ♪ but here at wimbledon, a chance to prove she's still a champion. ♪ >> i just feel like the court is where i belong. maybe i'm not supposed to be anywhere else. i know tennis is what i do best. and -- i never can let myself down in tennis.

>> reporter: and there's another chapter to the story. her sister, venus, older by two years, was diagnosed with sjogren's syndrome. an autoimmune disorder, at the u.s. open. she lost in the first round. but believe it or not, she and serena are in the ladies doubles final today. so they could come back and win their fifth title together. what a day that would be for the family. what a triumph. i wish i could bring you strawberries and cream. you'll have to settle for tennis coming your way at 8:00 a.m. eastern, breakfast at wimbledon on espn. >> we'll be watching, hannah. thank you so much. you can go to espn all morning for full coverage of the women's final. dan? >> great to have hannah storm on the show. moving on, now, i think it's fair to say brad pitt is one of the most famous and outspoken liberals in hollywood. he refused to get married until gays and lesbians everywhere in america could do so, too. you would think the woman who raised him might share his politics. but now, brad's mom, who you see right there, has dropped a very public bomb. abc's diana perez has the story.

>> reporter: brad pitt may be a global superstar, but he's so close to his mother, he even brought her to this year's academy awards. when it comes to politics, they couldn't be farther apart. pitt has publicly supported president obama, and made same-sex marriages one of his defining causes, as he did on the "ellen" show last year. >> i said we would not be getting married until everyone in this country had the right to get married. >> and i love that. >> reporter: now, his mother, jane pitt is sharing her views. she's not mincing words. in a letter to her local newspaper in missouri, she calls president obama a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage. and she's clear why christians like her should vote for mitt romney. even though he's mormon. i think any christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals,

business experience, who is against abortion and shares christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he's a mormon. >> the cliche is that hollywood is filled with liberals. and brad and angelina are among the biggest democrats out there. it's unusual to read jane pitt's highly conservative feelings. >> reporter: he's not the first celebrity to find himself at odds with family over politics. even pitt's fiance, angelina jolie has the same issue. her dad, jon voigt, is one of hollywood's most vocal conservatives. the pitt family may not have been vocal until now. perhaps brad might wish his mom took the same path as his brother did, starring in a cell phone ad down under. >> that's how you do it. >> reporter: that ad has already gone viral. it's, by all accounts, showing how normal and mundane life is like as the non-celebrity pitt.

we call it gaa around here. >> the elegantly titled "gaa." >> we've got a supersized preview coming up. for weeks since the news broke about katie holmes filing for divorce, her strategy is dominating the conversation. pretty much her every move. now we're hearing from tom cruise's lawyer. he's raising the curtain on the coming counterpunch. abc's tanya rivero is here with more on that. good morning, tanya. >> reporter: good morning, dan. that's right. what we're now hearing from tom cruise's lawyer makes it clear, he's not just been licking his wounds. his team is preparing for battle. this could be the calm before the storm. while katie holmes is seen around new york city with her daughter, suri, speculation swirls over when tom cruise will finally make his move. just like many of his onscreen characters -- >> remember, you wanted this. >> reporter: -- cruise is playing it cool. his lawyer, powerhouse attorney

bert fields, says he'll file a rival divorce. but for now, he's keeping his cards close to the chest, telling the bbc -- we're letting the other side play the media until they wear everyone out and then we'll have something to say. fields won't yet say where cruise will file, or if he'll seek custody of their 6-year-old daughter. he's saying it's not tom's style to do this publicly. he's really sad about what is happening. >> the filing in new york by his wife is somewhat of a surprise to him. she's probably trying to distance herself by filing in a jurisdiction as far as way from mr. cruise's sphere of influence, which, in los angeles, as you can imagine, is significant. >> reporter: another apparent surprise, holmes is seeking sole custody of suri, a tactic lawyers say could turn ugly. >> sole custody is an extreme type of custody order. in the absence of there being some danger to a child, sole custody is a difficult thing to get. >> reporter: as legal strategies

are honed on both sides, holmes appears eager to move on with her life and career. on monday, she filmed an episode of "project runway." and she's set to costar in an upcoming film with "gossip girl" heartthrob chase crawford. she graces the cover of the upcoming "elle" magazine. and her fashion line will have its first showing in september at new york fashion week. just this morning, the website tmz is reporting that holmes and cruise's lawyers are in quiet negotiations over everything. custody, visitation, child support, and a property settlement. if all goes well, it will be done here in new york with no court appearances, dan and bianna. >> it's in the best interests of both sides to end this thing quickly and quietly. >> and in suri's best interests. >> of course. >> exactly. >> well taken. thank you, tanya. appreciate it. let's check the other stories developing overnight with jim avila. he's in for ron claiborne. good morning once again. >> good morning, bianna and dan. good morning to all of you.

we go overseas this morning. british police have arrested a seventh person for allegedly plotting a terror attack. six others were taken into custody on thursday. the police claim the arrests are not connected to the olympics. libyans are voting in their first preparliamentary election since the overthrow of libyan dictator moammar gadhafi last year. despite threats of violence, people lined up hours before the polls opened this morning. here at home, the tragic hazing death at florida a & m university was nearly avoided. three days before robert champion, the drum major, died, the dean of students urged the school to suspend the marching band because of concerns about hazing. and finally, thousands of adrenaline junkies raced through the streets of the spanish city of pamplona this morning for the annual running of the bulls. six people were injured in the mad dash. my son ran this last year. he did survive. he was not gored. no one was gored this year either. >> that must have been a nerve racking day for you.
