investigators are trying to figure out today where a man was heading saturday with several guns and body armor when he got into a shootout with chp officers in oakland. byron williams shot and highway patrol officers who returned fire wounding him. they are looking into his background and the contents of his controversial diary that was seized after the shooting. live with the latest. >> williams when he was arrested had in his possession a

information in that notebook but investigators aren't saying much about that. terry mcsweeney "abc 7 news." also in oakland police are investigating a sniper attack trying to find a person that fired from a high-rise building. they arrested three people on drug charges when someone begin firing from a nearby high-rise building. police called for back-up and s.w.a.t. teams went into the building but they didn't search any individual apartments. officers were looking they would find images of the suspected shooter by visiting the building's surveillance camera room. >> in an effort to see if there was video footage that captured the shooting that is where we went to first. apparently their video system room of what it contained was vandalized. >> police don't yet know if the sniper vandalized security surveillance room or if it had

been damaged before. no one was injured in the shooting. >> oakland police are also investigating a murder they say a had a-year-old virginia man was found shot to death at the intersection of 18th and webster streets just before midnight. the victim was in the barrier for a job interview with google. there have been 40 homicides in oakland compared to 26 last year. >> the oakland police department was forced to lay off 80 officers to balance the budget. guardian angels plan to work in the city. the mayor requested their presence. members of the volunteer group are not armed but they do carry handcuffs and trained in self-defense and they understand the legal procedures to make citizen arrests. >> walnut creek police are

warning dryers to take an alternate route. the first demonstration backing johannes mehserle is planned for that area and hundreds of demonstrators and counter demonstrators may show up. mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter ten days ago in the fatal shooting of oscar grant. laura anthony has a preview for us. >> this rally is not scheduled to begin for at least three hours but preparation here are well under way. now across the street from me you go see that there is a yellow tape around the contra costa super court in walnut creek. they have put up metal barricades and few police officers milling around in the parking garage. it appears they have enlisted the help of the parking lot patrol officers in walnut creek. in the meantime the court has cancelled all scheduled business

after 2:00 which is scheduled when the rally is to begin. some businesses will close as early as 1:00. others will stay open but with extra security. >> i have two friend that are skilled in the fighting arts that will come and help with me just to keep order. the deterrent of someone might be worthwhile. i don't know. i am praying that there is no damage to people or to property, but i'm not sure. i can't predict. >> now the rally in support of johannes mehserle was organized on facebook. at least 140 people have indicated they do plan to attend. that prompted members of the coalition for justice for oscar grant to say they, too plan to come here this afternoon. they are urging a peaceful demonstration and respect on both sides. the fear, of course is both intent to making the kind of

trouble we saw in oakland after the verdict in mehserle case may show up this afternoon. here is a live picture of butter cup grill and bar restaurant next to the courthouse. the owner says he is not certain what is it going to happen this afternoon, he, too plans to close his business. he is going to send folks home after the lunch hour. as for the street, the road is very busy road as folks that live out in this in this area. they're not sure whether they will close it but they are urging folks to find an alternate route. they will close the road if it becomes necessary. laura anthony th "abc 7 news." >> in vallejo residents may be waiting longer for help to arrive. they shut two fire stations to save money. daily staffing levels and other

stations are being reduced from 18 firefighters to 15. fire department is warning that response times for fire and paramedic calls will increase because of the longer distance that crews will have to travel. vallejo will rely more heavily on neighboring districts for back-up. >> a pord of supervisors committee is considering to expand the powers of the entertainment commission. the issue stems from the deadly gang shooting in february and last weekend a man was shot and killed outside jelly's restaurant. legislation proposed by a supervisor would allow the commission to revoke permits with clubs with history of failing to curb violent behavior. former president bill clinton's budget list. most important things he wants to do in his list. but first, president obama

sea floor. officials are afraid it's part of a small leak that could turn into an uncontrollable gusher. bp is now spent $4 billion dealing with the spill. >> on day 91 we've gone from a catastrophic gusher to bother some bubbles. they think it could be a methane gas leak, president obama you are required and i directed you letter ordering them to inform the government within four hours. >> this is not about who is getting along or who likes who. this is about doing the job for the people of the gulf. if that means we send tough letters to bp we're going to send those letters. >> i direct you to direct a procedure for opening the choke valve as quickly as possible

not too hot with a couple of 90s but it has been very warm in the west. finally big ridge of high pressure is sliding to the east another upper level trough is going to sink to the south in the next 48 hours. that will bring more dramatic cooling for the next couple of days. it has been warm, sacramento 99 and 84 in los angeles. back home, not a lot of change. look for 74 in san mateo with 60s here with a lot of cloud cover. san francisco mid-60s and upper 60s so running cool. 79 in petaluma bit of a break from the heat but you get north still quite warm in ukiah pleasant day in oakland 71 for you. east bay communities on the warm side but that is what you expect. 80s in dublin and 90s in pleasanton and fog should be

reason there. the umpire was taken to the hospital and vallejo' coach turned himself into police. no word on whether charges will be filed. >> a new report gives the san jose unified school district an "f" when it comes to fire prevention. somebody deliberately set fire to trace elementary school the investigation was done by a media partner mercury news. they found the alarm system didn't send out an alert about the fire until 45 minutes after neighbors called 911. 20 of the district's 43 schools have fire alarms that ring at the school but don't alert anyone on campus. only three of the schools have 3 automated fire systems and most don't have fire sprinklers in the classrooms. >> san jose school officials continue to receive a steady stream of donations from community groups to support teachers and students at trace. one donor offered to match any
