scene. you can see this crime scene. this was an officer-involved shooting. but the fbi is now part of this investigation. the chp case, because of what was found inside the suspect's truck. he is a two-strike felon on parole. they found a homemade note book that had the word "california" written on it. >> a dramatic scene. >> reporter: began with a routine traffic stop. the chp officers pulled over the white toyota pickup because it was swerving in and out of lanes. when an officer approach the car, the driver fired. >> he sees the driver reaching for something, and the next thing he sees and hears is she is being fired upon. >> reporter: the officers fired back in a shootout the chp says may have lasted nearly eight

minutes and involved 60 rounds. the driver was hit and taken to the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition of the two officers had minor injuries from being hit by flowing grass. at the investigators combed the scene. the handgun, rifle and shotgun still sat inside the truck. >> the driver was wearing body armor and was struck multiple times. that's perhaps why the driver survived. >> reporter: that driver has a long criminal history out of washington state. he was driving a truck registered to his mother who lives in groveland, california. criminal records show byron williams was parolee driving on a spins license. his arrest history chows assault, property destruction, dui, hit-and-run, and theft. >> fire in the home. fire in the hole. fire in the hole. [explosion] >> reporter: 15 hours after the shootout, the bomb squad

detonated what they thought was an explosive device. it turned out to be items taped together. authorities say other things inside the truck prove the driver was intend on harming someone or something. in addition to the weapons and the ammunition, there was a homemade notebook on california. >> there is no doubt in our mind, based on the body armor, the amount of ammunition, the type of weapons that was in his possession, that he was on his way to do a very serious crime to either someone or a group of people. >> reporter: now, we did speak to williams' mother by phone. she didn't want to go on camera. she said she couldn't understand her son could be accused of being involved in this. the he spent his time taking care of his grandfather. the said occasionally he would become very angry while watching television news. our phone calls prompted thor look outside and realize her

truck was missing. she hadn't realized it until then. then she went to look inside the family's gun safe and noticed the guns weren't there, either. >> carolyn: we have just received our first picture of the shooting suspect. 45-year-old byron c. williams, has a lengthy record ranging from assault and dui to hit and run. he is currently on parole in another state. now, he is at highland hospital in oakland and is expected to survive his wounds. >> alan: we're in the neighborhood where the gun battle erupted and she joins us with reaction from the people who heard its go down. >> reporter: the people are still shaken by what happened this morning. we're on macarthur plowstled, and very close to where the action was. one resident posted video of the activity he witnessed just outside his home.

amazing innocent bystanders were not injured. cars were driving on 580 as the whole thing was going down. so the chp says it was a very lucky situation. live in oakland, abc-7 news. >> carolyn: thanks, lillian. authorities have identified the armed man shot and killed by five oakland and b.a.r.t. police officers yet morning. it happened near the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. officers tried to you a taser on fred collins of oakland but when he charged them with knives, they opened fire. the b.a.r.t. and oakland police departments are promising thorough investigations. the b.a.r.t. civilian review panel does not go into effect until january. >> alan: in vallejo two fire stations will be shut down tomorrow morning as the city struggles with budget problems. they safer north a lay -- vallejo and glen cove. last july, another fire station was shut down. officials say response time for

firefighters and paramedics will be longer because of the increased travel time. vallejo will rely on a neighboring fire district for backup. >> carolyn: in san jose, new report finds the alarm system at trace elementary didn't sound out about an alert until 45 minutes after neighbors began calling 9-1-1. the mercury news reports it is unclear why there was a delay but the school district has only the minimum safeguarded in the school. only three of the schools have fully automated fire detection systems, and most of the schools, including trace elementary, do not have fire sprinklers in the classrooms. >> alan: tomorrow morning crews will begin -- >> carolyn: pardon me. they will begin constructing a temporary by-pass over a sink

the cap has been holding for three days. but the question now is what comes next and who will make the decision. b.p. continues to monitor pressure readings and test the cap. >> alan: despite the fact that no one has decided what should happen now no news is apparently good news for people along the gulf coast. >> reporter: the "associated press" is reporting oil cleanup officials are concerned the capped will may be leaking methane gas. but there are encouraging signs. the ongoing well integrity test will continue for the potential extensions. b.p. and government officials have extended the test offering the capped well into a fourth day. >> as long as it's holding the pressure that's building inside of it, that's a very good sign. >> reporter: the government still might ask b.p. to open the valves on the stacking cap to capture the oil, netting one piece of important information.

the amount of oil that has been leaking. >> once and for all they can get a good flub on -- number on the flow rate. >> the second well is up to five feets to its target. >> carolyn: medical news now. research is suggesting a double digit benefit for treating people with h.i.v. they're less likely to infect others. a joint study by the canadian and u.s. governments found new infections plummeted in canada when more people went on aids drugs. new infections dropped by 3% for every 100 people with h.i.v. who started taking the drug combinations. the results are published in the british medical journal. >> alan: thousands of people raised millions of dollars in the aids walk. >> carolyn: and changes ahead in our weather. leigh glaser

san francisco, 64. 79 in redwood city, and 82 in san jose. low clouds and fog will move in, and temperatures have cooled. half moon bay, 57. 62 right now in san francisco. we have 90 in concord and 96 in antioch. low clouds and fog will move in. the coast and the bay overnight tonight. it will be patchy, not at widespread as this morning. cooler inland tomorrow, and then the cooling will continue through tuesday, wednesday, possibly even into thursday. we woke up this morning with fogger in the coast, and you can see how quickly this cleared. we had the northerly winds moving in. nice clearing. still hot inland with the 100 degrees in livermore. low clouds and fog with the westerly winds picking up. we move become towards the coast and the bay. temperatures much like last night. mid-to-low 60s, ant -- we cool

off to 55 for san francisco. 54 for half moon bay. this weekend, it has been high pressure centered to the east of us that has been bringing this bubble of hot air, pushing it towards the bay area. the central valley, modesto, temperatures will over 100 degrees. tomorrow, a little heat relief. all of this will push east, and that will allow a stronger onshore winds to develop. slight i cooler tomorrow, much cooler on tuesday and wednesday. here's a look at the highs for tomorrow. 81 santa claire. a at the coast, 61, pacifica. redwood city, 78. san francisco, 62. in the north bay, santa rosa, 83. 82 for napa. east bay, oakland, 71. fremont, 78 degrees. and then interior valley areas, temperatures starting to come down.
