presumed loss of life here is the major story. there are also economic impact because of this port and this bridge that went down. we just lived through a supply chain crisis, we know what that can do. what will the impact of this be? >> that port is 80 billion of trade every year, equating to 220 million per day. largest port for importing cars and trucks in the united states and exporting coal in the united states. this will have a major impact on the economy and supply chain. there are about 40 ships stranded inside the harbor, they can't leave. there are ships coming into the harbor that have to find other harbors to go through and ships plan to sail and will find

association, he said the captain of the ship did everything he could to slow the ship and keep it from drifting to the bridge. there was a total blackout on the ship, it was a complete blackout. what could have caused this? >> it could have been anything from electrical failure to mechanical failure to air in a fuel line that caused this to happen. the question i would push hard on, i don't believe they did everything they could do. the ship has two anchors, they did not drop the anchors, that is first thing you do when you lose steerage, drop the anchor to prevent this. does not look like they did that ot otherwise they would not have been going eight knots per hour. we need to understand what

happened to the ship's propulsion. >> carley: i believe i read the captain tried to drop one anchor, would that have been appropriate move or should he have dropped both? >> if they had time to issue a mayday and allow for the bridge to be closed, they had time to drop the anchors, i'm wondering if they were properly manned. >> todd: the mayday call saved countless lives by stopping people at the bridge. it appears the mayday call did not make it to the construction workers on the bridge. >> some reports say they chose to stay on the bridge to try to rescue people and there are other reports that said they did not have time to get off the bridge. if you were working at the midpoint, you would have to run

that port. and then also you have got the cruise ship business haven't gotten there yet. a cruise ship business. all of that is going to be disrupted. then yesterday, also what happened real quick i will just tell you is that you had -- there was one cruise ship instantaneously impacted. all those voyages have to be -- those passengers have to be moved. we are looking at a port that is probably -- that bridge is going to be out for a couple of years. the port can operate. but that bridge also an economic story just for the baltimore area for cars and trucks and things like that. >> todd: great set up on the problems and question of how long, cheryl. thank you. let's try to get an answer from that from somebody in the government. jeff van drew information committee and subhouse coast guard and maritime transportation. how long before things get back to normal, if ever? >> they will get back to normal, and we got to do it as soon as we possibly can so our committee, we are in touch with
2:58 am
the national transportation board department of transportation. the coast guard. among other agencies. here's the deal, this is what government is supposed to do. unfortunately we often aren't doing what we are supposed to do. we need to help this get remediated as soon as it possibly can almost two decades ago in mississippi, together in the congress, and got the dollars that were needed over to where it was needed in. [broken audio] accident happened. we better determine what we need to do when and where we need to do it and get it done quickly. one other point here that's really important. it is so important that we realize that the inventories that companies have are not the same inventories they used to have years ago before joe biden because inflation is so high it's problematic for them to hold that many goods in one location. so we are going to very quickly have problems with the supply chain. you know, bad policies reap more
2:59 am
bad policies. the question here isn't necessarily more laws. 9 question here is maybe for the department of transportation whether it is with the airlines and what is going on with boeing and all the problems they are having over in this case. you know what in don't worry about free equity, buttigieg, don't worry about all the other issues that go along with using the proper pronouns, let's worry about people keeping people safe and reacting quickly to these types of issues. >> there is an implication in that first answer that you gave that in some way the biden administration is responsible for the events of yesterday. do you lay any blame at the feet of joe biden and if so why? about 45 seconds to you, congressman? >> inflation, less goods are on hand. the inventories are low because the inventories are low, we are going to feel this much more quickly than we normally would do. yes, i do unfortunately. >> todd: final question to you.
3:00 am
who hold the shipping company accountable and what does that accountability look like now 30 seconds to you, congressman? we're going to have hearings in congress. we're going to have hearings probably on both of my committees, the coast guard subcommittee as well as on the entire transportation committee to find out exactly what happened it. may not be more regulations and laws, are we enforcing them properly and a big shout-out to law enforcement who did the right thing, moved quickly, and saved a whole will the of lives on that bridge. >> todd: amen. without our foun first respondes both on the bridge and in the water we would have lost a lot more people. jeff van drew, we appreciate your time this morning. keep us posted on the steps you are is taking the people need the government to step in and fix this. "fox & friends" begins right now. >> lawrence: buckle up 6:00 a.m. on the east coast and wednesday,
