just fourth of july, independence day has an added connotation meaning we fought for independence, a reminder right in the name. if you celebrate fourth of july you celebrate freedoms and liberty but also fun which is a big part of it. independence day is how we get those freedoms secured and we get to the brag about them again. >> and we love independence day because we beat the aliens. oh that wasn't real. >> you have no idea. >> the land of opportunity. it's the land where alarms go off. but it's the land of opportunity for someone like me, an immigrant who came to this country at a very young age, 6-year-old. english was not my first language, i used to run out of my classroom because my english was so bad and look at me, here i am now. only in america can something like that happen. >> the american dream. >> can i point out english was not your first language and you speak much better english than i do, i'm still kind of learning it. don't appreciate them giving me this topic by the way. the world's top competitive eater, joey chestnut, wins again but not without some stiff competition from the weather. officials calling off the nathan's hotdog eating men's contest due to torrential storms hitting the coney island area. >> but chest nutted didn't let soggy weather block him from his 16th title t reigning champ urged organizers to save the contest and he went on to once again take home the gold after dwourg 62 hot dogs in just 10 minutes. this is actually kind of funny how this all went down because like you said there was a big thunderstorm that happened. the competition was supposed to happen at noon, and all -- it got delayed and then all of a sudden word got out that it got cancelled. and then there's this picture of joey chestnut and he's like storming coney island. >> wwe like elbows up. >> a bunch of reporters said he was heard saying i'm going to get all the guys out here and we're going to do this thing.

>> good for him. >> i don't know if it was him or not but low and behold at 2:00 p.m. the contest went off. >> what an absolute leader. you put him there in the halls of joe montana and john elway. >> he is considered an athlete, yeah. >> joey chestnut man. >> can we point out the obvious too. like i love how they're pretending to care about anybody's health at a hotdog eating contest. worry about the rain someone might get nah moan why you but go ahead and eat 60 hot dawks in a minute. >> how has nobody else trained hard enough to beat the guy. can people try harder. >> physical anomaly. >> what's funny is i listened to a podcast a couple days ago and joey chestnut was being interviewed and he did say that the weather does have an impact on his performance. >> on his gut? >> because he said that if it gets too hot tbuns dry out and it's hard to eat. if it's too cold the hot dogs get cold it's hard to eat. so the perfect forecast is like 82 and overcast and it rained. so he didn't do 77, which was

along with hundreds of thousands of others joining in on the fun. how's it going, abby? >> oh, it could not be going better. we have had an absolute blast over the last several days at freedom fest. this morning we were at the grandpa raid where there were about 350,000 people in attendance. but, look, people here in provo don't just celebrate on the fourth of july, they start celebrating on the first. that's when we went to stadium of fire, an f-35 flyover performance by journey and the biggest fireworks show in the country. but i want to talk about something we did last night that truly encaps slated the american spirit. take a look. ♪ >> we are celebrating the fourth of july in true american fashion at a rodeo. this is the western stampede rodeo and before it starts i'm going to go get a behind the scenes look. ♪ tell me a little bit about this

rodeo. >> so this iss the 68th year that we've had the rodeo here in west jordan. we've gone from a little tiny town to a fairly good size city now. >> you have a rope in your hands. >> i do. we are going to try this out. i think this is one of the most important skills you can have in life. >> absolutely. >> so will you show me how to do this? >> sure. >> okay. >> yeah, you got it! >> yes! >> yeah! >> you're a great teacher. look at this. >> so this is a saddle course, so this is a guilding so he's ready if you want to climb on. >> i would love to do that. >> you just stay outside. >> all right. let's do it. >> the most advanced thing i've done has just been rope a stationary plastic cow. so this has got to be the most advanced thing, we're going to barrel race. come on, lucky. come on.

♪ ♪ >> half of the points come from you as the rider and your technique and how well you do, and half of the points actually come from the animal. and so you want to climb on one that's going to buck hard enough to give you the best chance to win. >> such a special experience but one of my favorite parts about that was talking to the gentleman who lays the dirt. if you know who the sod father is and his role in the super bowl, the same thing goes for steve. the coolest part, though, is he is a vietnam veteran who talked to me about the significance of the rodeo during the fourth of july. take a listen. >> coming back from nam, we didn't have that celebration, so this kind of helps us get through. so when they raise the flag, it's pretty dear to our heart. so it's fun. and having this as that moment, that's been special for me, and be involved in the rodeo.

our hot dogs are made today the same they were in 19 16. this is the original flagship nathan's. >> the original one? >> the original stand was literally right behind you. >> how many hot dogs do you usually sell on the fourth of july. >> this particular restaurant on a particular july 4th, '10,000 hot dogs. >> that's a lot of dogs. there is a reason we associate hot dogs with the fourth of july. >> the nathan's famous fourth of july hotdog eating contest. >> how did the nathan's hotdog eating contest get start. >> according to legend he opened his stand and there were a couple patrons arguing who's the most patriotic on july 4ththed. they said let's settle it at nathan's who can eat the most hot dogs. >> there's something special about the nathan's. what's the secret. >> i can't tell you. the same recipe for 107 years. would you like to flip a couple dogs? >> i would love to.

here so he flipped burgers at jack in the box and sold clothes at the jc penney's men's department just to put a roof over our head. my mom meantime put the right values in our heads. she taught us the power of prayer and the value of honesty and integrity. and after finishing a bachelor's degree in just 2.5 years my dad became a respected engineer at general motors where he is finally, hopefully, thinking about retiring. hard work and sacrifice, that is what my parents taught me. and they learned it from their parents who lost everything as refugees. so believe me when i say there isn't a day that goes by that i don't think about how a little brown girl from a third world country, who grew up in a very poor town in indiana, is now somehow sitting here in new york city living her wildest dreams with my best friends. if you have drive, if you have determination, and you have big,

because now it's less awkward i got those t shires shirts made up. it was embarrassing for a couple weeks there. >> carley: issue a that was beautiful thank you for shish that with us. >> joey: there's a' famous building here, some would say the most famous building in the big apple, the empire state building, marking america's birthday with the fourth of july fireworks party including an unforgettable view and our very own a lexus mcadams is there ahead of the spectacle and i think we're going to cut to her and she's going to tell us about it. there she is. there she is. tell us about it. >> i saw your guys setup. pretty good setup here, i saw yours when i was leaving the building earlier but i might have won because check out this view, we move in closer here, we are at the empire state building getting ready to watch the country's largest fireworks display and you can see the skyline here in manhattan and this is where all that magic is going to happen in just a short time from now, 25 minutes of that nonstop fireworks show, which is a big salute to america and what better place to watch

it from than this iconic empire state building. now looking at here at the 86th floor is just a little bit of what we're going to see here but the empire state building is also having a pretty big fourth of july event giving panoramic views of the city and annual macy's fourth of july fireworks. let's get into it. what's in store, four new special effects to watch out for, a mile wide waving flag red white and blue 30 colors and shapes will light up the sky and a thousand feet high over the east river with 60,000 total shells to give you an idea what we're looking at here. and 102 floors of the empire state building, been named the number one attraction two years in a row by trip advisor, come and check that out. we move in here on this side so you can see inside as well the view of the empire state building for this floor. this is going to cost $6 million for the fireworks display so expect big crowds tonight. back to you. >> it is going to be amazing alexa thank you very much >> up coming up next chase

the veterans. we truly live in the land of the free because of the brave. fox nation host abby hornacek spoke with world war ii veterans in provo utah to hear their incredible stories. >> i'm so proud of our flag. i'm sorry. i'm so proud, all the kids that died with me. it just, my country, and, again, the greatest pride is in thanking the young kids who fought, those that survived as well as those that died. just a tragedy. >> joey: those stories need to be told, they need to be documented. we're lucky, window area absolutely blessed to hear the

words from that man. i wrote a book, my book unbroken bonds of battle it's available now. and the reason i want you to read it it includes stories, inspiring stories of veterans that have been a coherent part of my own journey. i really have the privilege of calling them my friends, not just my brothers. one of those amazing vets is truly remarkable, his name is aaron hill. we went to eod, or bomb tech school together and after a successful career in the navy as a chef which kept him away from the fight he wanted to be closer to the front lines and joined the army to take bombs apart. he was severely injured in afghanistan by an ied but his injuries haven't slowed him down. as a matter of fact he sped up. he's about to run 135 mile race across death valley the hardest foot race almost in the world. he will be the first 100% blind and deaf person to ever complete lit. aaron told me all about the

upcoming race. >> 135 starts at death valley, and it goes 135 miles to the mount whitney portal. just the trail head to the tallest point in the contiguous 48. and it's 48 hours, more or less, of some hot temperatures and, you know, some altitude change as well. so it's going to be grueling but it's for a good cause and i like a challenge. >> joey: relying on an implant to communicate he still cooks. you can see more of my interview with aaron and other inspiring veterans on home of the brave airing next hour. carley, who makes you proud to be an american. >> carley: first of all that's an incredible story thank you for sharing with us. i want to highlight chad who hosts save our allies and rescued thousands of people from

afghanistan. the way that we withdrew from afghanistan was a catastrophic error and so much human suffering has happened because of it. but when our government fails us there are men and women who are willing to put their lives back on the line and go to the last place that they probably would ever want to go again to try and clean up the mess. the situation in afghanistan, we have to remember, it is still -- it is horrific and there are so many men who signed up to serve our government as interpreters who we made a promise to and we failed. now they're living in hideings. but it would be even more horrific than it is right now without people like chad. >> joey: chad's amazing. aishah? >> aishah: proud to be an american is evan gershkovich. we have to remember that he is still in a russian prison as of right now. his family here at home waiting anxiously for him to return home. and i am hoping and praying every single day that he returns home as quickly as possible. >> joey: yes. >> aishah: we all have to

remember that he not only represents all the journalists that are working here in the united states and abroad all over the world, but he represents freedom of press. this is one of the greatest freedoms that the united states affords us. it does not exist, it really does not exist in the rest of the world, many many countries all over the world. so i really want to remind everyone when we're going about our daily lives and celebrating with our families, just remember the freedoms we have and get to enjoy those and we lose those whether we get on a plane and go somewhere else all over the world and evan was just doing his job reporting and sending the truth to the rest of the world what was going on in ukraine and russia and now he is in prison. so we should all be collectively praying for his return. >> joey: absolutely iewe absolutely are. i have an uncle sam. his name is thaddeus, he's 96 years old. he's a world war ii veteran. he actually served in general macarthur's honor guard. it was a big deal to us growing

up because i lived in levittown which was the first suburb in a lot of ways built for post world war ii veterans built houses using the gi bill, drank beer swam in inground pools played whiffle ball but it was there i learned to love this country. there was something baked into the cake that there was a swag to be part of this thing that was bigger than you. life wasn't about the graham or your feed, there were moments that was about the whole thing and that's what i love about the fourth of july, today is the day to honor out of many one, but it's the whole thing that counts here in america and thank you uncle sam for teaching me that. >> a lot of people say they have to pay their taxes to uncle sam. >> no if my uncle sam had the money the pittsburgh pirates would have a much better team. he lives in pennsylvania. >> he is still alive. >> jimmy: he is demoralizing us, he goes jogging hangs out goes
