"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. elizabeth: welcome to the show. stocks in a broad selloff the dow enters correction territory. the nasdaq in a bear mark the can on reports the eu, the u.s., talking a russian oil embargo. the while house denying that today. oil hitting a 14-year high, nearly $131 a barrel. gas at an all-time high, tripled in just a year, heading to five bucks. recession fears are mounting there is that. now there is this. the humanitarian crisis is exploding in ukraine, the worst in europe since world war ii. connell mcshane is on the ground in slovakia with more. connell. reporter: liz, the total number of refugees is getting close now to two million. we've been watching them here?

slovakia. so many people coming in after such a long trip getting across the border. there are volunteers waiting to help them there. what they will do they will come over, there are a number of buses across the street, if you line up, if you go to another part of the country, another part of europe. we're talking to one man from england originally working in kyiv as a teacher. he was telling us how difficult it is right now to get civilians out of ukraine. >> like crazy. you get messages every day from people that don't know what to do. they are trying to escape and the russians are attacking evacuation routes. they were attacking the trains we were on. when we were on the train, turn off all the lights, the train would stop. as soon as air raid sirens would stop and as soon as we moved again we would stop. reporter: this family arrived as well. children on freezing cold night. others are not sure where they're going next.

others have family or friends in slovakia, some other country. i have got to tell you, liz, we're talking to some of the volunteers as well, so many people from all of europe stepping up to offer their homes so that refugees, this is a refugee crisis, approaching nearly two million have a place to stay at least on a temporary basis. liz? elizabeth: what a story, connell mcshane, great journal i thanks for joining us. we have reports two russian jets were shot down over ukraine. joining us now congressman pete meyer from house homeland security and congressman lee zeldin from house financial services. your reaction to the reporting you heard, congressman meyer? it is very clear russian forces overextended themselves. you see them resorting to indiscriminate bombing and shelling of civilian areas, violations of international law of armed conflict, war crimes because frankly they are not a

top-notch military and putin is getting desperate. elizabeth: to congressman meyer's point, congressman zeldin good to see you. russian bombing of evacuees, new ukrainian border is heading to russian ally belarus and people calling this move completely immoral. your reaction to that? >> it is. as congressman meyer is pointing out. we have multiple violations of international laws. russia is losing operations internationally throughout the entire globe. you've seen ukraine do very good job, utilizing social media, getting out videos, stories, so people watch the atrocities in real time and you're also seeing a dynamic with regard to the russian troops that must be demoralizing where they're not encountering an adversary they were told that was ahead of them. they're not coming across ukrainian government and people that is looking to inflict that

kind of harm that the russian government was sending down its ranks. that has to be greatly impacting the moral purpose and focus of the russian troops. elizabeth: he is deliberately slaughtering children, women and men. the situation on the ground is terrifying and heart-breaking. watch this. >> stop. stop. listen to senator marco rubio saying no to a no-fly sown. senator manchin says yes. >> a no-fly zone if people understood what it means it means world war iii. not some rule you pass everybody obliged by. iting willingness to shoot down the russian federation? >> would you support a no-fly zone? >> that is no the russian people's war, putin's war, and whatever it quest may be. to take anything off the table is wrong. i would take nothing off the table. elizabeth: congressman zeldin, how would trump have handled that? how would trump handle a no-fly zone and what is going on in ukraine? >> i don't believe putin would have invaded ukraine if president trump was still in office. i believe that one of the reasons why vladmir putin went into ukraine was sensing a vulnerability that manifested itself last august when the withdrawal from afghanistan and also the way secretary blinken

was indicating threats of strongly worded letters and sanctions that don't amount to much. president biden green-lighted a miner incursion and the white house tried to clean that up but damage was done. i don't believe we would be in the position in the first place. we need to lead, be strong, consistent and effective and right now that is not happening at the highest levels of the u.s. government. i can't answer to what president trump might do as far as a no-fly zone debate right now but as we saw during four years of president trump he was focused on not entering into new conflicts and to finish up wherever possible. elizabeth: congressman mejier, what is your reaction? what are your thoughts? >> i think it is important to recognize russia is not a force that can take us head on in any traditional military conflict there is always a concern something escalating to nuclear. i'm not a supporter of no-fly zone, the last thing we want,

first thing vladmir putin wants, wants to frame this as russia fighting the u.s. and nato and if we implement a no-fly zone that will exactly be the case. elizabeth: how do you think trump would have handled isn't. >> i think to congressman zeldin's point i think putin would have step ad lot more gingerly. he wouldn't have anticipated what president trump might have done. that would make him a lot more wary look what happened to quassem soleimani that was ripping up a playbook that the iranians gotten complacent with. i think russians have gotten complacent with their playbook and weren't expecting international condemnation. they got an understanding that the biden administration would act in a very measured way and putin took advantage of that. elizabeth: congressman zeldin, a lot of questions. why didn't europe put in a security agreement to make ukraine neutral? why did we wait to impose sanctions on russia? should europe step up more. a country, a nation, a region forgive me, a region of

we have to take some time to get off of oil and gas. we recognize this. this is a transition. >> congressman malliotakis, your reaction? >> i mean it its ridiculous to point to europe. europe, look at situation right now where they are beholden on russia. 40% of their natural gas comes from putin. that is why they're in this situation. he has so much leverage over them. we need to do the opposite that is the reason the president doesn't want to do it because he is afraid of the environmentalists. reality we could be for clean energy, renewable energy, we need diversification. we need traditional energy resources. he is playing a a political game hurting the american people, driving up small business expenses and food prices and it is just wrong. elizabeth: you know congressman luetkemeyer to the congressman's point the president numbers are not freight, got 47% in the marist poll, if gas goes beyond five dollars, you're talking

recession. constant misleading rhetoric, jen psaki says we don't have strategic interest in cutting global supply of energy. no one is talking about that. no one is asking to reduce global supply. not buying oil from russia so russia can fund its war machine. oil supply does not decrease by having that action. you know what i mean, congressman, there is constant misleading rhetoric, to think strategic reserves are a strategy. it is not a strategy it is a bandaid. they were using strategic reserve by offsetting that 6 billion bucks. tapping strategic reserve is not a strategy, it's a nickel and dime move, congressman luetkemeyer. >> i agree whole-heartedly. we purchased $22 million of oil from russia per day and it will go up because the price of oil will go up. the bottom line it is easy to solve the problem i mentioned a while ago.
