congress to support the effort. biden: sorry to keep you waiting i was waiting to talk to the delegation. i want to speak briefly about the terrible incidents an accident that happened in baltimore this morning. about 1:30 a container ship struck the francis scott key bridge which i have been over many times and i commuted by train or car. jand the bridge collapse sent several people and vehicles into the river. j multiple u.s. coast guard units which were stationed

nearby were deployed along with multiple emergency personnel. the coast guard had respond to the port where we had the highway investigation, fbi and army corpsf engineers as well as fire from -- fire officials from maryland record dating a response. officials estimate that eight people were unaccounted for. that number might change. two have been rescued. one without injury and one in critical condition. a search-and-rescue operation continue for those that remain as we speak. i spoke with the governor as well as the mayor of baltimore and co. executives, two senators in the congressman in the secretary of transportation is on the scene. i told him that we would send all the federal resources they need as they respond to this emergency, and i mean all. ■zwe are going to rebuild that port together.

everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident and at this time we have no other indication or reason to believe that there was any intentional act. personnel were able to alert the department of transportation had lost control, as you all know and reported. as a result local authorities close the bridge to traffic before the bridge was struck, which undoubtedly saved lives. our prayers are with everyone involved and all of the families, especiallyore news ofr loved one right now. i know every minute deals like a lifetime and you just do not know and it is terrible. we are incredibly grateful for the rescuers who rushed to the scene and to the people of baltimore, and i want toare wity with you as long as it takes. like the governor said you are marilyn's tough and baltimore strong -- maryland tough and baltimore strong.

the search and rescue operation is our top priority. ended until further notice and we will need to clear the channel before it ship trafficon the spot and d the effort to clear the channel. the port of baltimore is one of the nation's largest shipping hubs and i have been there a number of times as a senator and vice president. it handles a record amount of cargo. it is also the top ports in america for imports and exports. around 850,000 vehicles go through the port every single year. and we are going to get it up and running again as soon as possible. 15,000 jobs depend on that. and weg we can to help those workers. the bridge is critical for travel not just for baltimore about over 30,000 vehicles across the francis scott key bridge on a

daily basis. two of the most important elements of the economy and the -- in the northeast and quality of life. my transportation secretary is there right now and i had directed my team to move heaven and earth to open the port and rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible. hand in hand to support maryland's in whatever they ask for. we will work with our partners to make sure that the state gets the support it needs. it is my attention that the federal government will pay for the cost of reconstructing the bridge and i expect congress to support my effort. this is going to take time. and the people baltimore can count on us -- count on us to stick with them on every step of the way until the port is reopened and the bridges rebuild. we are not leaving until this job is done, not until then. i just want to say god bless everybody who was harmed this
