trump phrasing criminals that have been describing january 6, wilders as hostages while critics attacked his comments about a bloodbath. if he isn't elected, his campaign says those words are being taken out of context. >> we're going >> to bring you trump's remarks, plus, he may have a bigger problem today trying to make a 400 and million bond in his civil fraud case? >> his >> lawyers say that's easier said than done and securing a bond and the full amount is a quote, practical impossibilities. and ripped apart at the seams haiti descends further into chaos with gangs choking off the supply of food and fuel, turning cations in the capital into refugees and their own city we're following these major developing stories and many more all coming in right here to cnn news central
11:02 am
>> we begin with donald trump's 464 problem. >> that's the >> sum is attorneys just revealed that trump can't come up with a court filing. trump's attorneys said he can't find an insurance company to underwrite the nearly half billion dollars bond he needs to pay the bond as part of a new york civil fraud judgment against him. trump and his organization. you might recall, were found liable for fraud, conspiracy, and issuing false business records. a trump's attorneys quoted an insurance broker saying the bond was a quote, practical impossibility cnn's kara scannell joins us now, live with the stories of kara trump's attorneys are revealing that this is a real significant challenge for them. this, as he tries to appeal that decision yeah, boris, this is the latest filing in this effort to get an appeals court to tell him to rule in his favor and say >> he doesn't need to post this bond while the appeals process plays out. so to try to underscore their argument, trump's lawyers are saying
11:03 am
that it's an enum possibility for them to get anyone to underwrite a half $1 billion they say that they've approached 30 different underwriter, some of the world's largest insurance companies, and none of them will underwrite this ban. trump's attorneys say that a number of these companies have internal limits where they can't write a bond in excess of 100 million. trump's is clearly five times larger than that. and then also some of the ones that then could write a bond of that size. they are not willing to accept any real estate properties as collateral. they only want trump to put up cash or stocks. and that is something that trump is unable to do. so his, one of his attorney said that that that limitation that inability to take any real estate is a major obstacle that they faced in trying to get the bond. so as you say though this is, this trump is trying to persuade an appeals court judge to say he doesn't have to post the bond because he has the properties that he could ultimately turnover or sell to satisfy this judgment. we're expecting in a decision by the appeals
11:04 am
court by the end of this month the new york attorney general's pposed trump's request. and they have said that they're ready to move forward to seize assets. if trump does not come up with this money ultimately, the next step here though, is for the appeals court to rule on whether they will give trump breathing room for us. >> i'm kara scannell. thanks so much for the update. briana >> donald trump is on the defense today after he talked about a bloodbath. if he's not elected, this was during a weekend campaign event today, he insisted that he was referring solely to the auto industry, but the biden campaign said his remark is trump doubling down on political violence seeking quote, another january 6, here is what trump said in ohio on saturday >> if you're listening president xi and you and i are friends, but he understands the way i deal. those big monster car manufacturing plants that you're building in mexico right now? and do think you're going to get that, you're going to not hire americans and
11:05 am
you're going to sell the cars us now. we're going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line. >> and >> you're not going to be able to sell those guys. if i get elected now, if i don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole that's gonna be the least of it. it's going to be a bloodbath for the country that'll be the least of it. but they're not going to sell those cars see, you in a national correspondent. kristen holmes is with us now on this okay. kristin, take us through this. how trump is clarifying his comments >> well, during this rally, he was talking about the auto industry and yes, he said this bloodbath throughout the country. and one thing i really want to point out here is that this is the kind of rhetoric that donald trump has it's been using during his campaign for the last several years, talking about bloodbath, talking about revenge, not necessarily all about political violence, but just the way he talks in general, it talking, he talks any dark manner, but now people are starting to pay attention
11:06 am
because now he is the republican nominee. so what we heard was an actual clarification of the remarks which does not something that we usually get from the former president he posted to true social, once again saying that these comments were about the auto industry, saying that the media fully understood that he was simply referring to imports allowed by quote, crooked joe biden, which are killing the automobile industry. then he went on to say the united auto workers, who of course we no, he has been courting the rank and file for their votes, but not their leadership. fully understand what i mean talking about the word bloodbath. what i want to bring up here is what i'm talking to his campaign. they know they've entered a new cycle now, all of the things that donald trump used to say and has been saying are under the microscope this is how donald trump talks. and they're going to have to figure out how to deal with that. i want to play another moment for you in which he essentially said, are praised, those who have been charged for their actions on january 6. take a lesson ladies and gentlemen, please rise for
11:07 am
the horribly at unfairly treated. january 6, hostages can you see this spirit from the hostages? and that's what they are as hostages they'd been treated terribly, unbelievable patriots and they were unbelievable patriots and our this is something that we have heard from donald trump time and time again. but there's a difference now, donald trump is any general election and he is the republican nominee. so he is showing what he is giving voters as a choice if he were to be elected. the other thing that he talked about was how he doesn't view migrants and people coming to this country specifically credit as people. again, language that we have heard early similar language that we have heard from donald trump before. but this is all changing given the fact that he is now the republican nominee, we are setting up a general election, as you said he is giving essentially soundbites to the biden campaign to say, is this who you want to vote for? and it's campaign is going to have to contend with that now because it is no longer him talking about this stuff in a silo. it is now
11:08 am
getting national attention because this is a two-man race for the president of united states yeah, at a certain point, they can't just say no, no, no, that's your hearing that incorrectly at a certain point, you're just hearing the words. i know you also, kristen, have some new reporting about his 2016 campaign chairman paul manafort, who received a part and of course, from trump after he was found guilty of several financial crimes back in 2018, what have you learned? >> that starts the paul manafort was one of several people who cycled in as head of the 2016 campaign and then immediately came out because it was a very volatile time. but he is now in discussions with trump's orbit about how to essentially get involved again, in those discussions include a talks about hidden being part of the republican national convention. it's something that he's worked on in the past and his life as a politico. but as you mentioned, since that a lot has happened. he was charged with several financial crimes and pardoned by former president trump. now part of
11:09 am
this stems from the fact that donald trump himself likes paul manafort and he has talked about him a number of occasions since its forces would not get into specifics as to what exactly he would do. i had one source flow to me. it might be around fundraising with the convention trying to raise money, trying to separate him from the campaign. but multiple sources saying nothing had been finally decided yet, all that they would really doubled down on is the fact that he is, in fact in conference perceptions about how to help trump's reelection campaign. >> kristen holmes. thank you for that. let's talk a little bit more about this now about former president trump's comments with someone who was directly impacted by january 6. we have retired capitol police sgt. aquilino gonell with us. he almost died that day. he cites the lingering trauma from it is a key reason for the end of his career. >> he wrote the book, american shields, the immigrant sergeant who defended democracy sergeant, thank you so much for being with us today. first, let's get your response to donald trump using this language to describe the
11:10 am
january 6 rioters calling them patriots, unbelievable patriots. and hostages as well. how does that sit with you? >> thanks for having me show in my react if those people are hostile years in political person, then who are we? the police officer. >> i'll according to them >> that defended the capital on that day, then who are we? it's very disappointing. >> it's >> something like that. it's coming from the party that says that they support the law enforcement and community. somebody who respect the law and order. the rule of law >> you know, it there's no support this, no way that it could tell me as a former police officer or somebody who defended them, including those political a letter that they support me and my fellow officers because they don't it doesn't comport with what they saying publicly and privately. >> sgt. you were actually you were at a hearing today for a
11:11 am
january 6 defendant who is convicted of assaulting police officers that day. and the former president's hostages comments came up, and i wonder what you said to the judge about that. >> i reminded the judge somebody a fad that person got to years, 27 months? plus probation. i reminded georgia this person is not a hostage. he assaulted five different officers, including myself, along with his son, that he took to influence to the capital >> the the fed that these people are also believing that there are political ghazi while there are, are >> is convicted felons that had been gone through the court system. and judge, by the judges in the peers and they have been found liable for what they did. they not being pumped prosecutor are persecuted because the political views, there have been prosecuted
11:12 am
because what they did to us of the police officers and on that day, that's such an important point. you previously mentioned the politicians that have been supportive of the rioters. there are some politicians out there, like senate minority leader mitch mcconnell, who is critical when january 6 happen. but more recently, he's endorsed donald trump for president. these are the same politicians whose lives you were trying to protect. i imagined it has to be infuriating, but here that they're now endorsed trump. >> as i mentioned my book, american shoe is a total betrayal of what the sacrifices that we did and jeremy six, because on yummy six they knew who was responsible. they ran in fear for their life on that day and they three years apart from that day, they seem to have forgotten how it fell for them while they were running to their safe, how to the safe area, to the secure areas. we were fighting for our lives, especially myself in the tunnel
11:13 am
we're roughly 30 to 40 officers held the line against thousands and thousands of people who are trying to breach the entrance where they normally go to be safe. and that's very disappointing as i mentioned, they continued support somebody who continued to flirt were political violence continued to say things that are rages that any other political official would be disqualified for. somebody who talks about bet land, somebody who talked about american carnage, just like he started with his inaugural speech. that's how he ended his four four-year term with american violence and the capital, the doorstep were those political officials were running for their lives and they happen to forget that they were running for their lives on that day. and who made them run for our lives? >> one of the reasons law
11:14 am
whatever lawmakers, officials, whoever condemns, will condemn the behavior, whether it's criminal or even just bad behavior of their supporters, is to try to discourage it for happening again, but we're seeing obviously the exact opposite when it comes the former president trump. when you see in that rally that he had, he has people stand for the horribly treated hostages is they are called by the announcer there. what worries do you have about the future? for your former colleagues? for their safety, for the capital, for the country. if donald trump is elected again >> this point, you have, you don't have to guess what he would do in a second term. he's telling us what he's going to do. it's up to us to take him at his work because that's what he's literally telling you is that he's going to be a dictator for one day. what is there to stop him from continuing being a dictator? he
11:15 am
called for political violence. what is to stop them from doing those things regarding my colleagues, i mean, i hope that the changes that have happened since there were made for security reasons since january 6, they perfectly they hold i do have a lot of friends and i consider family still that works. still worked there. >> but >> i'm afraid for their safety. i'm afraid that this will happen again. and because one reason is some of the same letter face you who we'd risk our lives four he continues to downplay for political purposes the threats that had been posed or that this person represent and it's very shameful again, these are the people who say they support loyal law in order, the police back the blue there's no way that they they they could tell me to convince me that they are doing that when there are continued to support the same person who send them up to the capital. a
11:16 am
person who continued to say that certain people were killed unjustly because he was only a jar or like myself you know, i find it very offensive that he race stand-ups, a stammer, and a attention saluting the jaremy six, anthem in a desecration of the national and the secretion to the american flag when they and blessing his picture on the flag itself, they have issued with some people have issue with kneeling for the flag, but in blessing, in blessed one. here's image on the american flag then, then we have no issue with that. so is it kind of like a be hypocritical about certain things and seleta arh, to my opinion, sergeant gonell, >> we appreciate your being with us. thank you so much. thank you for having appreciate your time today. >> still ahead. surging gang violence and power struggles, or paralyzing haiti. we have

americans trapped in haiti amid the escalating gang violence. there are now back on us soil about 30 people were evacuated as part of the state department's first chartered flight out of the country. the group's departure comes as haitians are quickly becoming refugees. in the capital city. hundreds of thousands of people have already been displaced by the violence. there. we want to take you now, live to port-au-prince with cnn's david culver. david, it is obviously a dangerous situation where you are first take us there and explain what you've seen and how the folks that are living there are doing boris, it's incredibly unpredictable. and one of the things that stood out to us over the weekend as it seemed to be a bit of a calming stake, things quieted down and we were able to get out and to see different aspects of the city within the curfew time and the ones curfew hit, of course, we had to get back it all change though in the early morning hours today, we've got a call from a
11:23 am
security source who warned us of gangs attacking to affluent neighborhoods. and we're making our way closer to where we are. so it's about three miles, right. those gunshots now it sounds just a few gunshots were here and just off from where we are and that's actually where those clashes are still happening. you may be able to hear them, but their fate right now, and those clashes between gangs and police and not only police, but also community members who are supporting police and all of this. and they have created barricades and some their neighborhoods to try to push back these gangs. what so terrified those. you have to think about the folks who are in that community. it was around 05:00 a.m. that the attack started that the gangs were coming through on motorbikes and cars, and just wreaking chaos through their neighborhoods. >> you >> don't have the opportunity to pick up the phone and called 911, so they're on whatsapp they're calling loved ones. they are absolutely terrified. reported what they're seeing, and police are so strained. there, of course, trying to respond. but again, it falls on
11:24 am
the community to have to step up and to play a role in stopping the gangs from encroaching even further into their territory as of now, they've been able to push back a good number of these gang members. but one of the things that is quite striking is how the communities then take justice into their own hands. we've heard several who have explained to us how that plays out. they will often capture after cornering some of these gang members. and then they will execute them essentially, they will either kill them with machetes, set them on fire. it is quite gruesome. i've seen some of the videos very, very disturbing. and the community members are split on this. you have some who say, we don't want to be doing we want peace, we want to find some sort of stability. and you have others who say, this is our only way. it's either kill or be killed if they have to feel some sort of line of defense here that would even maybe send a message to some of the gang members not to come near their communities it's interesting as we were even trying to go through some of those neighborhoods over the weekend, you have to really reach out in advance through
11:25 am
locals, make sure they know who you are and why you're coming. because if they see somebody who they don't recognize or were they feel might be suspicious spores they won't hold back and it's for them a matter of life and death. >> those are just heroin details and it's not just the violence, david, that is a serious issue. getting your hands on base, goods food, water, shelter those aspects to daily life have become incredibly complicated by the political crisis. walk us through what you've seen in terms of people being able to access those goods and what the humanitarian aspect to aid is, right now, what is it like to try to get a aid into haiti >> well, it's a struggled to get aid in and we know that un air bridge is operating. we know choppers have been going leave it as of the past few hours back and forth from santo domingo with much needed medical supplies, getting food and is another situation because folks are quickly running out of the limited
11:26 am
supply that they've been able to stock up upon of all the food that is consumed in this country. 90% is imported. and when imports holt, that poses a very, very dangerous situation for the folks living here when you get the supplies here, boris, that's one thing. then you've got to figure out how to navigate it through to the areas where it's most needed. those areas are blocked by gangs and not just one gang. you have seven the role that are blocking off different roads and basically making logistics next to impossible when it comes to trying to transport those goods. the folks though who have been displaced, you talked about refugees within their own city more than 300,000 as of today, the latest numbers these are people who have then found any sort of facility they can to take over. schools are obviously not open. so yesterday we found in one school with about a dozen classrooms, you had more than 1,500 people families, kids, cramming in to these classrooms, sleeping under the chalkboards, trying to find any sort of shade to protect themselves from the sun and making that their home, they have no food coming in. one woman held up a bag of rice
11:27 am
that basically fit in the palm of her hand. and she said, this is our meal for today for seven people they're desperate and we do know that one local non-profit is stepping up to try to help with that. but even i was touching base with that non-profit directive today. and they told me that they were trying to empty the septic tanks in that school and the trucks that normally would empty them are all full and backed up because they can't empty them at the dumping site because gangs have blocked it off. what does that mean that boris, you're talking about sanitation issues, but you're also then saying if these folks are consuming water that is potentially tainted, we have already seen cholera numbers surgeon, so you're talking about the gangs not only going after people when it comes to physical violence, killing them starving them out. and in this case, even potentially leading to disease and death. >> a crisis on multiple levels. david culver with an exclusive look inside port-au-prince at david. to you in the crew, please stay safe while you're doing your reporting. thanks so much. >> row

>> we are awaiting a major supreme court decision on immigration. specifically, this is on a texas law that gives local authorities the power to arrest people they suspect have crossed the border illegally. the supreme court paused this law and today we're going to find out if they extend that stay or if this law is going to take effect, the ruling could impact the record surge of migration at the us-mexico border as well as the heated debate around that surge a recent poll shows 28% of americans say immigration is the country's top problem. more concerning than the economy or problems related to government leadership let's talk about this now, a cnn senior political analyst, mark preston. mark we should say this law, whatever happens as we wait to see what the supreme court does here this is abbott again, effectively taking this issue to the forefront, making it not just a texas or a border state issue. but really making it a national 1 is congress
11:29 am
fails to act. >> yeah, no question about that because governor abbott, as we will hear from other folks along the border, other lawmakers, they're going to tell you that they can't handle this surge. and in many ways they can't, you know, when these folks come across, not only are you dealing with them on the police? using basis when you catch them and then you let them go. but if there's any health care needs, you have to house them. you have to feed them. so there's an incredible strain right now on these border states. and that's why you're seeing these states take these actions. >> we have watched on so many issues congress way, do they want the issue to fight about where do they want to solve the problem? and if this problem is really truly an emergency, a total crisis, they do end up solving it right here and they're not going to let the economy go off a cliff. we've seen them come together on some of these issues. >> can you see my face right? >> i know you are skeptical on some on this one though they've made the decision. trump's scuttled this and republicans decided not to go along with it even though it was a bipartisan
11:30 am
deal. so now they're fighting over it politically, are democrats making any headway with this issue? >> well, they're certainly trying they're certainly going to try to look what they scuttled was $20 bipartisan bill that what have increased security at the border. i mean, there's no question about that. but this >> has happened before. go back to 2007 when george w bush, if you remember that george w bush and john mccain and ted kennedy tried to get comprehensive immigration legislative drove that to fell, that fell because republicans or democrats both didn't care for it. but you're absolutely right in this case. and in this case alone, president trump told the republicans in congress do not allow this to get through. we need an issue and he was very open about saying that that was right when i came to washington, memories there, i wonder if you can talk a little bit about the gains. actually, this might be counterintuitive for some folks looking at this debate, trump is making gains with hispanic voters yeah, no, he is. >> and it's interesting because certainly in politics and we'd like to put people into categories, it just makes things very simple. let's
11:31 am
organize people and that's how they're going to vote. well, hispanics are not a monolithic voting group. cubans and artha seems guatemala, guatemala is not the same as mexicans. it's just people are different. so what we are seeing now is that trump is trying to make inroads to them. he certainly did it in his first administration when he was in there, he tried to reach out to small businesses and what have you also understand that folks who are supporting donald trump are here legally, they could have been here for generations. maybe they've only come in the last decade or so, but they came here legally and they don't want to see other folks coming here illegally and being able to bask in the fruits that the united states has. it is interesting it's a weird situation to look at, but donald trump certainly is making ground with them. he's also making some brown with african americans. yeah. and they >> also might like some things about his message. they look past some of the language on immigration that's also circuit if they tend to be a little bit more consistent, right? mark preston. thank you so much for taking us through that. >> still ahead, the >> ceo of united airlines is

multiple in-flight incidents involving a wheel falling off a jet after takeoff in san francisco. a hydraulic fuel leak forcing another plane to turn around in australia, an engine fire breaking out after takeoff in houston and just last friday, a piece from the underside of a plane's fuselage going missing. see you in an aviation correspondent, pete muntean joins us now, so pete walk us through this training and what the ceo is trying to share with united customer united, that a bad couple of weeks headlines and now it ceo is sending this message to all of the airline's customers, insisting that the airline is safe. but also laying out new changes that the airline is making. there's been at least six in-flight incidents involving united airplanes. this month than in this new message, united ceo scott kirby says, while all of these incidents are unrelated, i want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus. the latest incident was on friday, a united boeing triple

737800 landed in medford, oregon with a belly panel missing. this was first discovered by somebody on the ground when the plane pulled up to the gate, united says this did not affect the flying characteristics of the plane. so this wasn't known by the pilots and they did not declare an emergency. united says all of the incidents this month are now under review. let's look at the timeline. march 15 as 737800 lins with belly panel in medford, oregon on march 11th, a triple seven trailing hydraulic fluid in sydney on march 8, and airbus a320 divert to a hydraulic issue also on the eighth is 737 max eight slid off the runway in houston on march 7, a triple seven lost a wheel on takeoff from san francisco, and then on the march, there was an engine fire on a 7:37, leaving houston. here is what the airline is doing. it's adding an extra day of pilot training. >> it's >> also starting to redesign training think four new hire mechanics united says it will also put out more resources and the managing its parts supplier

network. a lot of questions that investigators will have, whether or not these incidents were caused by maintenance induced issues. kirby says, these are all reminders of the importance of safety. no doubt customers have taken note your boris the big thing to note here is that none of these incidents resulted in anybody getting hurt. >> so really >> important to underscore that aviation in the us is safe, even though all of these things are making headlines all the time. >> yeah, incredibly fortunate that no one has been heard in those incidents. i noticed p that when we're laying all of those out there was one airbus and the rest were bowing plan. >> could >> these issues be tied back to the manufacturer? >> it's really important to separate out these issues from the 737 max-9 door plug blow out back in january 5 on alaska flight 12, 82, that really stemmed from a quality control issue at boeing and the ntsb is found that airplane left the factory without those four critical door plug bolts. that's a more systemic issue all of these other issues, these six instance we've seen on united latam incident we saw last week where that plane had
11:40 am
a severe jolt onboard and passengers were hurt. those are more like one-offs and so it's important. remember here the last time there was a fatality on a us airliner was back in 20181 person killed sort of a freak incident. last time there was a fatal airplane crash in the us involving an airliner was back in 2009 that led to a big seat change when it came to regulations and pilot experience requirements. so this is really significant to point out the difference here. this is not necessarily just a boeing issue pete muntean, appreciate you bringing it down for us. >> of course. >> so new cdc data shows that marriage rates have gone up in a year since the covid, pandemic began as divorce rates have gone down, we'll discuss why more people are tying the knot and fewer are calling it quits when we come back >> backroom deals, cia secrets, affairs bribery, corruption, prostitution >> there's so much more to the store. >> united states of scandal

11:46 am
trends? let's talk about this now with a psychotherapist, dr. robbie ludwig, joining us again here okay. let's talk first about this increase in the number of marriages because the covid, pandemic halted most weddings. so you know, is that maybe why marriage rates saw that bounce? >> it's certainly could be, but also post pandemic, i think what we saw was a change in value system and we really looked at the people in our lives and what we wanted for ourselves, for those who are living with companions during covid in some cases, a deepen their relationship and they wanted to show commitment of marriage as a result of that deepen connection. and i think also there were people who were lonely and really valued what intimacy an emotional intimacy feels like and wanted to create that for their lives yeah, it's it's such a good point.
11:47 am
anything else that you think may be causing the increase in marriages >> well, over the last few decades to there's been an increase in mental health and mental well-being and people, it really gave people an opportunity to look at themselves and what they they wanted in their lives and what they wanted from marriage. so as a result of having that opportunity to look at what kind of partner they want, what kind of character they're looking for in a partnership. >> and the >> flexibility of roles and being able to communicate with another person about what you want them, what's important to you? also allowed an increase in marriage and the desire for marriage. >> we do live in >> a coupled catered world. so our culture certainly celebrates marriage and happy couples. and it's nice to have that feeling of being seen and that you matter just someone. and i think with a result of all these apps and just we
11:48 am
realize more is not necessarily more. and when people find a valuable person or partnership they want to make that commitment and enjoy together so then dr. robbie, what about the decline in divorces? what are you seeing there two people are better able to communicate with partners. they're not as willing to just go towards divorce. they want to work through some of their issues and come out the other side. hey, i think there's an appreciation of commitment and that with a lifetime commitment, there will be issues that come up, but it doesn't have to be a deal breaker. and i don't think anyone wants to be alone or have that sense of loneliness. so there is a re-evaluation of the person that you're with. and a desire to pursue that hopefulness in turning a partnership into something that is rewarding and fulfilling.
11:49 am
>> and really quickly before i let you go, your advice for couples who are looking for that happily ever after it's really a combination of using your head and your heart when looking for partnership >> and it's one of >> the most important decisions you will make in your life. it affects everything. so to take your time, look for a person's character, know yourself, and then and i think marriage is a wonderful institution, so i highly recommend it. >> highly recommend ten out of ten dr. ravi ludwig. thank you so much for being with us to talk about these trends. we're seeing all right, and ahead, get out your brackets because it is time for march madness. we're going to break down the favorites and who to watch before the big dance begins
