listen to the voters and i listened to a lot of virginians about what issues were most important to them. so i think the same issue set will be in our 2023 elections. which we have in virginia, our whole house, our whole senate is up. that is what i'm focused on. that issue is really clear, cost of living has run away from folks. they're worried about the economy. what about public. safety they are really worried about education. wait about behavioral health. i hear it over and over again. and so we have focused on that in 2021. we put together a really common sense platform in order to address these issues. when i was hired, we want to work. we got a lot done. even with a split legislature. with the house controlled by republicans and senate controlled by democrats. common sense prevails. we cut taxes, we invested a record number in education. record in law enforcement. we went to work on behavioral health. we've made tremendous strides in that is why i'm confident this year that the voters would be pleased with the work that we have done in virginia. >> one other thing voters have been concerned about is abortion though. it is still top of the mind for a lot of voters. including in virginia and those

elections. you have said that you have pushed for a 15-week ban. and that it belongs, that is up to the state issue after roe v. wade was overturned. but our federal candidates or candidates running for the 2024 nomination push in front of federal, banned a rock? >> let me just begin with where things stand in virginia. so i am a pro-life governor. that is what virginians elected. i believe in exceptions in the case of rape, incest and when the mother's life is at risk. and just three years ago in virginia. the democrat-controlled legislature and governor were pushing for abortion to be legal all the way through and including birth. and virginia's view that as a way to extreme. and so when roe v wade decision came down. i viewed as a chance to bring people together. a chance to bring people together around a bill that would protect life at 15 weeks. when a baby can't feel pain. and i believe that this is the place we can come together. what i hear from virginians over and over again is that abortion all the way up through
10:06 pm
and including birth is far too extreme. and that they want to fewer abortions. not more. and i think we can come together on this topic. and i think it will be something that is discussed extensively during the election in 2023. >> it will be, but what about a federal van? are you for that? >> i do not think again, that we have common sense bringing us together. around a 15-week bill that protects life when a child can feel pain. and this is a really important moment. there is a chance for us in virginia to really demonstrate leadership. to bring people together on a topic that has really been a divisive one. this is why i am focused on coming together on a topic that is historically been one that has divided people. let us unite each other. >> you talk about coalescing around 15. alex governor desantis is somebody, a fellow governor viewers a republican who signed a six-week ban in florida. he is obviously running against donald trump for the nomination. he has not done as people have predicted he would he has not been as big of a challenge to trump as people thought he would. do you think he would be able to be a challenge to trump? >> as i have said to folks,
10:07 pm
because i've been asked this question frequently, when i am humbled by, i've been at this for 18 months. and gosh, 40 years ago i was washing dishes and taking out the trash in virginia beach because i needed the job. but i think what has been demonstrated is that when somebody brings common sense to an office like a governor in virginia, you get a lot of. we deliver on promises made. people pay attention. and i am encouraged by that because i think what folks are seeing in virginia is that common sense prevails. and when we lower taxes and streamline regulations and amidst a record amount in education and stand up for law enforcement and prioritize behavioral health, change can happen. and good things come of it. that is what we are encouraging. as i said, folks we are focused on 2010. three entire legislators up this year. our house and senate. i want to hold hold or house and turn our. senate >> i've heard you say you are humbled by this when he will have to give. this but evil so never ruled it

10:09 pm
we are going to back parents, we're going to reestablish excellence and education. we will fund law enforcement, we will fix paper to help. these are the issues virginians have been focused on. and keep, and we have been able to deliver. i am incredibly humbled by the fact that there has been a focus on what we are doing and that has translated into national interest. i've said over and over, get him focused on the commonwealth. >> virginia is often a bellwether for national politics. people look at iran. he did also put up a campaign video not long ago people thought it looked like a presidential campaign video. talking about what republicans need to do impact the white house, we're in what you are, doing to think donald trump is the best option for republicans now? see the best your party has to offer? >> here is what i believe. we will nominate a candidate who. when >> you think -- >> i think it is time for a republican leader. i think what has been demonstrated from the biden white house is that foreign policy weakness and a disarray

in the economy. a lack of understanding of how all the pieces fit together has resulted in americas struggling. inflation is the -- crime is the second biggest issue on voters minds and third is education and i hear every day from virginia. and there is nothing to come out of the biden white house. it's most important kitchen table issues. i think this is a great opportunity for common, sends conservative values to be reflected. i will back over the candidate. is i think it's a great chance for republicans to ld again. >> even if that candidate is donald trump. when he was indicted in the documents investigation, you poedo tweet saying the charges were unprecedented. called it a sad day for the country and referred to a tiered justice system. now that you've seen the indictment, we've heard from trump in his own words in the audiotape. you still think he should not be held accountable for what is being alleged in the indictment? >> let me back up and just be
10:11 pm
clear that what we have seen happen to the former president is inconsistent with what we've seen happen in other circumstances of elected officials. >> like which ones? >> i think this is what folks are concerned about. there are plenty allegations against the current biden white house and things that got on there. and in virginia, one of the things we saw was that the parents were standing up in school board meetings and demanding transparency and accountability in for children's education. met by the justice department of the united states. with accusations of being terrorists. alleged by one of the teachers unions. this is the inconsistency that virginians and i believe americans see. and it is something that undermines peoples trust in the system. >> you can have concerns about that. but the allegations of trump are different than that. he was the commander-in-chief. so he took documents related to national security. our allies weaknesses, u.s. weaknesses. he is on this audiotape talking of the chairman of the joint
10:12 pm
chiefs of staff. do you have any issue after you've seen that indictment heard the audio? >> i think the big concern from people is the fact that this seems to be a differential treatment and what other elected officials are receiving? and i will repeat it again. one thing about justice is that it should be applied equally and again with the home virginia view, i was stunned. that parents were being pursued by the justice department for showing up at school board meetings. this does not comport and therefore i do think that this is what causes people to lose trust in our justice system. >> or more question on, this you talk about regular people and how they would be treated. the regular person to come classified occupants of we've seen just happen to kansas city woman, they were sentenced to prison, they are being treated differently. trump is given a lot of leeway by the justice department here. >> as you press on the, stop let me be clear. it is the difference in approach that happens to
10:13 pm
different people that causes concern and a lack of faith in the system. as long as people are treated consistently, when elected officials and another elected official that i think that the trust is actually furthered. and when they are treated differently, it's undermined. >> i just think that the pence situation, the biden situation, they are all different in the sense of how the documents are returned and how they are participated. >> but i do not think that the american people see it that. >> it's not because they're not given accurate information? trump fought a year and i have subpoena on the justice department from. this slide his own attorneys according to this indictment in had an eight moving boxes to essentially evade them. >> again, what we are learning as the curtain is pulled back on a variety of topics is that not all elected officials have been treated the same. and i think that this is where people are scratching their heads. why aren't all elected officials treated the same here?
10:14 pm
and in the case again of virginia parents or the biden administration, people are asking the basic question. >> let me ask you another question because i know mental health and how the -- mental health america rank your state in when it came to guns are dealing. with how they're dealing with those issues. wiser state ranks a low, we doing to change? that >> such huge. problem for, so that date is based on 20, 19 2020 comparative data. so the first thing is that virginia was right near the bottom before the pandemic. and then as you come through the pandemic it only got worse. and our behavioral health system is being overwhelmed and that is why i made it a top priority to transform it and we launched the past december, a complete transformation of our behavioral health system. called right help, right now. we will fundamentally build a

show and a lot of people are proud of you, but, this is an interesting situation. you know, you can't work out a problem unless you have a conversation. i've had a ten-minute conversation five months ago with anybody from the white house and the pentagon. i'm doing it for several reasons, but number one, i'm not stopping anybody from being confirmed. i'm just stopping them from confirming hundreds at a time. they can confirm as many as they want during the day, we are sitting around twiddling their thumbs most of time during the week, and should be -- but that being said they are delegating and legislating from the white house, that is another reason i'm doing. this people in this country voted for congress, they want representation. they change the law, section ten 93, the law says i, again voted on by president biden, says there will be only abortion during the three exceptions, now president biden has changed this.
10:21 pm
he and secretary of defense now we ran hard for these positions to represent other people of our different states and districts, we are supposed to be making the, law not the pentagon, not the white house. so, that is one of the bigger reasons i have a hold on the, is it because they needed to do it the right way. it might get, passed right, send it over to congress, let's pass this. >> but you say they are violating the law, but the pentagon policy's opinion from the justice department of, says it does not violate the law, because there are not actually paying for abortions, they are paying for the travel to get there. this is, quoting from, policy the non covered reproductive health care is that the service member's expense. so, that would seem to say they're not violating the law, which is your whole premise of her blocking all the nominations. >> but first of all, i would not trust this department of justice as far as i can throw. but, you know, with a look at a different. i look at it is the law. the law is legislated through
10:22 pm
congress. now this was a law, it was voted on by joe biden in 1985. it passed. so, it has to be a lot. to change that law, has to go back to congress. >> but what you are referencing, the hyde amendment, but there's not explicitly paying for abortions. it is paying for the time off, and their services. regardless, even if you disagree with their position on, this is their policy, a colonel who's waiting to be promoted to one star general has no say over what the pentagon's policy is. so why are you holding these officers responsible for the actions of political and civilian appointees? >> when you are in a minority in the senate, it is only power that you have, to get people's attention, to get them to do at the right way, to go by the constitution, the only power we have is to get a hold on something. so, we thought this would get the attention of the secretary of defense, i told him back in december, if you do, this i will put a hold on all your admirals and generals. i did not hear from him for two
10:23 pm
months, he put the order through, just eight memo instead of a, lot he changed, it that is unlawful. to make it law, you have to go through congress. we are trying to teach them that you cannot legislate from the pentagon. and, so, it is a tough situation, there is nobody more military than me, caitlin, my dad was a military, career military. i'm all for the military. we need a strong military, but we also need to go by the rules and the constitution, and represent the people and taxpayers. taxpayers are not supposed to pay for anything has to do with abortion. >> your father was in the military, but when you talk about who is hurting, hair and you said you were going to do this, you are not directly hurting secretary austin or president biden here. this is a real impact on the families of these officers. they cannot move or resettle their families. they cannot enroll their kids in schools, their spouses can't take new jobs. wherever they are going to be station next. the scripts members of the military who are getting promoted from getting that pay raise. you realize that, right?

would already call to the white house and said coach, what are you doing. this is what we need to get this done, how do we work it out we have to come to some compromise. but, kaitlan, there has to be a conversation, nobody has even talked to me in five months. i hear that the president kateri over there, saying there has been commentary, there has been nothing. that is the biggest lie i've ever heard. if they are really worried about readiness, if they're worried about recruiting, how about we get this done? how about the come talk to me and let's talk this out and work it out and come to a good conclusion for the american people, with taxpayers, after of the united states of america? >> but your own fellow republicans disagree with you here. even mitch mcconnell says he does not agree with this. so, i guess i'm confused, if there is that conversation with the, white house what do you hope to achieve by talking to them if they stand by this policy which they put in place after roe v. wade was overturned. you say, you did not like this policy, where is the middle ground there? >> well, first of, all i did not work for any of the senator,
