of war in vietnam. he was a giant of the senate and two-time presidential candidate. mccain is survived by his wife cindy and seven children and mother roberta who is 106. there are plan force a full week of memorandum -- plans for a full week of memorials. we get the latest on that from kyung lah in phoenix. >> reporter: dave and laura, senator mccain, such a prominent figure, and arizona's favorite son. services will begin in his home state here. flags at the capitol lowered in remembrance of the senator. it is here where the services will begin. after a private service at the rotunda, he will lie in state for six hours. members of the public will begin to come in and say farewell. on thursday morning, there will be a public memorial service at a local baptist church in phoenix. then the senator departs for washington. on friday, the senator will lie in state at the u.s. capitol rotunda.

on saturday, a national memorial service at the national cathedral. on sunday, senator mccain will be laid to rest at the naval academy in annapolis. where he began his public service and military life there. that is where he will have his final resting place. dave, laura. >> kyung lah, thank you. emotional tributes coming from john mccain's senate colleagues. his closest friend tweeting america lost one of our greatest champions. i lost one of my dearest friends and mentor. arizona senator jeff flake got choked up speaking on cnn's "state of the union" sunday. >> it's tough. i'm going to miss him. i have admired him my entire life and it's tough to imagine a senate without him.

it's tough to imagine politics without john mccain. >> indeed. across the aisle, democratic leader chuck schumer is introducing a resolution to rename the russell office building after mccain. >> you don't meet many great men through life. john mccain was one of them. and i would like decades from now little children to ask their parents who was john mccain and they will explain his sacrifice and patriotism and fidelity. to do the right thing as he saw it and when he did the wrong thing, to change. >> former vice president biden honoring mccain with these words. john mccain's life is proof that some truths are timeless. character, courage and integrity and honor. a life lived with those truths cast a long, long shadow. john mccain will cast a long shadow. his impact on america has not ended. not even close.

it will go on for many years to come. >> we are told the white house drafted a statement for president trump praising mccain, but it was never sent out. several staff members which believed the memo went through an internal approval process would be released at the time of his death. trump went against the advice of aides like john kelly and press secretary sarah sanders. he instead posted a brief tweet. no praise for him at all or mention of his military service. the instagram post had a photo of the president instead of the senator. mccain was one of the administration's most vocal republican critics. >> others in the white house were gracious. ivanka trump and secretary of state mike pompeo calling mccain a patriot. among the flood of tributes, president trump's twitter page was silent except for the russia

investigation and the boastfulness of the economy. former president obama released a statement. saying few of us have been tested the way john once was or required to show the kind of courage he did. all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. at john's best, he showed us what that means and for all that, we are all in his debt. presidents obama and george w. bush will deliver eulogies at the national cathedral. as for who will replace john mccain in the senate, that is up to the governor doug ducey. ducey will not name a successor until after mccain is laid to rest. the winner will hold the seat for the remaining two years in 2022. ducey refused to talk about who would succeed mccain. except to say he would not appoint himself. john mccain left us with no shortage of moments.

don't have the moral core of having fought for the country. >> contrast that town hall moment to today with the birther movement. julian, you write john mccain opened the door that reorganized the republican campaign. >> that 2008 clip you showed came in context of his selecting sarah palin instead of lieberman as his running mate. opened the door to now the trump politics. he was there as the tea party took form. he was part of that establishment. another party of his legacy is -- another part of his legacy. he often did vote for supreme court pick and tax cut. that is a complexity that senator mccain would want disgust. he would not want us to soft

pedal his career. he spoke about his imperfect legacy. that is part of his story. the relationship between the gop and its fringe elements that came together under president trump. >> you know, his legacy is obviously unmatched, daniel. the president had very little to say about it. in fact, he didn't say anything at all other than sympathy and respect. then he posed an instagram of himself. meanwhile all of the other statesmen, people from around the world, diplomats and other party leaders and other countries have deepest condolences. i know everything we say doesn't shock us anymore, daniel. this was pretty shocking. >> "the washington post" reported last night how white house staff for donald trump proposed putting out a

statement. a news release calling mccain a hero after he passed away. trump nixed it. he wanted to go with a tweet instead. that shocked me. ordinarily when a notable american dies, the white house issues a statement. john mccain was an extraordinary person and trump just couldn't get over the fact that he battled and locked horns with mccain even to provide sympathy for mccain's last moments. remember that aide kelly sadler, she said he is dying anyway. the white house did not apologize for that statement either. >> yeah. >> julian. >> it is petty politics. i think these little moments when the whole world is praising and mourning and thinking about someone who did devote his life and body to the united states to do something like this and those moments tell us a lot about the

trump presidency. >> not just the democrats who stepped up. merkel and trudeau. macron. the list goes on and on. let's talk about what is next. julian, who carries his legacy? you look at bob corker is out. jeff flake is out. paul ryan is out. they are leaving. perhaps nikki haley or ben sasse? >> the senate is divided deeply. he is final voice of that generation. he understood that as well. i'm not sure. maybe susan collins at this point is the last standing person who embodies those ideals. that is not where the senate is going today. we should be clear about that. >> yeah. daniel, last word?

we have a primary tomorrow. >> yeah. doug ducey, the arizona governor, will pick someone after the week of memorial services and funeral for mccain. it is hard to imagine someone who will stand up against donald trump when needed. you know, those former congress members like matt salmon that ducey is considering, they don't exactly think of them as mccain loyalists who will replace him. no one can replace john mccain. let's be realistic about that. >> and given kelly ward, you can argue he is on the ballot tuesday. she said his statement from the family that they stopped treatment was designed to hurt her. just about ten days ago, she said that john mccain was complicit in the killing of mollie tibbetts. you wonder if the arizona voters have john mccain on their minds
