details coming out of that. just to remind you of some of what they have just said. they talked about eight people who were all related to the construction programme. there had been talk earlier today about workers being on the bridge. they say that one person was rescued and in hospital. one person was not in hospital. they talked earlier about somebody not being injured but being rescued. they said six people are still unaccounted for. so they are searching for six people they believe are a construction crew who were on the bridge at the time. one of those officials they are saying that they don't think anybody is in the vehicle but stressing of course that their investigation is still ongoing and the search and rescue is still very much ongoing. it was interesting to hear also the details there about how the ship did a mayday call before it hit the bridge are saying that the crew notified the authorities of a power issue, they said, they're on the ship. that gave the people on the bridge time
2:14 pm
to stop further traffic from coming onto the bridge and one of the people doing the press conference there talked about how these people are heroes because they got the warning and then they stopped cars coming onto the bridge. so perhaps things could have been much worse than they actually were. but that is still a major search and rescue operation ongoing. they talked about the work they were doing. they said that they were working on potholes on the bridge. they were keen to stress, the authorities, that there wasn't a structural issue of the facility they were working on, it was that they were working on potholes. they talked about the initial investigation pointing to an accident. they said there was no credible evidence of a terrorist attack. we also heard from the fbi earlier as well in the press conference, saying similar things. let's bring in our correspondence sean dilley who has been following the story throughout the day to day for us from the newsroom. some

the governor, whether there could potentially be anyone in the vehicles that fell. earlier, the authorities talked about seven people. that's been updated by wes moore, the governor, who is saying that actually they were looking at eight, the two who were initially rescued, the one he went to hospital in a critical condition, the other when they have spoken to and made contact with, and they were looking for six others. he was asked the direct question. to be frank, i suspect there are elements of being asked a question on the spot and you may not know the answer to it. the messaging that has been coming out stateside is that they are looking for six other people. those sonar readings are going to be an important indicator here, as too the drones, and a number of ships that have been sent to the area. do you know what was a real takeaway for me? the governor was trying to give that optimistic message that whatever happens he admits it's going to take a long time to clear up going to take a long time to clear up this mess, isn't it? but he said we will get this done. he said he

debris field is huge, isn't it? it is massive. you talk about the size of the ship. let's put this into some perspective, it is 300 metres. 300 metres. it's taken down a bridge thatis 300 metres. it's taken down a bridge that is 1.6 miles long, or three kilometres across interstate 695. the damage has been colossal, it has been a total collapse, so as you can imagine you are notjust talking about wreckage and debris in one area, you are talking right the way across the river. and the other point you make there, yes, it is really hazardous for the divers swinging amongst the diesel water and also very hazardous for the prospect of any of the six people they are looking for and indeed any other stoush swimming amongst the diesel water. they are having to survive in diesel lane water but also the temperature last time we had a reading on that was eight celsius, or47 had a reading on that was eight celsius, or 47 fahrenheit. this is really cold even without diesel in

let's stay with our main story, and that's the bridge collapse in baltimore in the us state of maryland. they are still looking for six people who are unaccounted for in the waters there in the water underneath that bridge or around that bridge. you can see the huge container ship there which is still in amongst the fallen bridge which collapsed around 1:40am this morning after that ship collided with one of the columns. we were hearing from one of the authorities that the crew notified the authorities of a power issue on the ship shortly before the collision. we have been hearing the

we seem to have lost the sound. we will return to the situation in baltimore and the ongoing search and rescue mission that's going on at the moment a little later. let's turn our attention to the us supreme court. a hearing is taking place today in a case which will determine the availability of a widely—used abortion drug. the case was brought by pro—life groups and doctors in texas. they claim the regulatory approval of the drug mifepristone — and subsequent revisions making it more widely available — were flawed. it's the first abortion case to come to the conservative—dominated supreme court since it overturned the landmark roe vs wade judgement that had guaranteed women's right to terminate a pregnancy. the outcome could, in effect, outlaw abortions even in states that have not chosen to ban abortions. for more on this, let's speak to kelly baden, vice president of public policy at the guttmacher institute — a research organisation focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide.
2:23 pm
she's currently at a rally at the supreme court. thank you forjoining us. i did a bit of a summary but could you just explain what is being deliberated on, orwill explain what is being deliberated on, or will be deliberated on from today onwards?— on, or will be deliberated on from toda onwards? ,, ., .., today onwards? sure. today the court is hearin: today onwards? sure. today the court is hearing a — today onwards? sure. today the court is hearing a case _ today onwards? sure. today the court is hearing a case that _ today onwards? sure. today the court is hearing a case that aims _ today onwards? sure. today the court is hearing a case that aims to - is hearing a case that aims to restrict the access of mifepristone one of two bill is primarily used in medication abortion in the us. this drug has more than 20 years of real—life safety use and evidence in the united states, its been approved by the fda since 2000 here and an even longer track record globally that speaks to its safety and efficacy, and the court with this case could make some decisions to essentially further restrict access to the drug, regardless of where you live. 50 to the drug, regardless of where you live. * , to the drug, regardless of where you live, *, ., to the drug, regardless of where you live. *, ., ., x live. so it's about what the fda did, this is _ live. so it's about what the fda did, this is the _ live. so it's about what the fda did, this is the food _ live. so it's about what the fda did, this is the food and - live. so it's about what the fda did, this is the food and drug i did, this is the food and drug administration, it's about the specifics on that and the way that
2:24 pm
it loosened restrictions, right? that's correct. the original case was based on faulty signs. one of the studies that the plaintiffs used has since been retracted. the original case did try in a post—roe v wade world further restrict abortion by going after the abortion pill mifepristone. a question before the court now is less about the original fda approval of mifepristone and more about the specific contours of its access and legality in the provision of that drug now in the us. however, to have the supreme court taking up another abortion case so quickly after they overturned roe v wade signals alarm for the many americans, the majority of americans who want to see abortion remain legal. it of americans who want to see abortion remain legal. it could have abortion remain legal. it could have a big impact. _ abortion remain legal. it could have a big impact. the — abortion remain legal. it could have a big impact, the result _ abortion remain legal. it could have a big impact, the result of - abortion remain legal. it could have a big impact, the result of this? - abortion remain legal. it could have a big impact, the result of this? it i a big impact, the result of this? it could and it's also notjust about abortion because really part of what is at stake is the very autonomy and authority of the fda. i think that's
2:25 pm
why we are seeing a pretty broad range of organisations and people weighing in on this case because they see that if the fda's autonomy is threatened by a judge in texas originally in this case, that that does not bode well for a variety of other drugs, vaccines, health care services etc. so it really is a broader than abortion case, but even just being about abortion of course makes it very important. just just being about abortion of course makes it very important.— makes it very important. just to remind us. _ makes it very important. just to remind us. we _ makes it very important. just to remind us, we are _ makes it very important. just to remind us, we are not- makes it very important. just to remind us, we are not going - makes it very important. just to remind us, we are not going to| makes it very important. just to i remind us, we are not going to get an answer until the summer on this? that's probably true. usually we beget big decisions from the court in the summer. there is going to be a second case related to abortion that the court will hear next month and there is of course a variety of other big cases and we usually expect them in june. other big cases and we usually expect them injune. but again, the supreme court can do a lot of things. supreme court can do a lot of thins. . ~ , supreme court can do a lot of thins. . ~' , . ., ., ,, things. thank very much for talking us throu~h things. thank very much for talking us through that, _ things. thank very much for talking us through that, i _ things. thank very much for talking us through that, i appreciate - things. thank very much for talking us through that, i appreciate your i us through that, i appreciate your time, kelly baden, at the guttmacher institute. stay with us on bbc news. bye for now.

hello. over the next few days mother nature is going to throw a bit of everything at us. a real mixed bag on the way as we often say from gusty winds, heavy showers, hail, thunder, some sunshine in between, too, and infact thunder, some sunshine in between, too, and in fact the satellite picture is already looking very dynamic, and if we look at this conveyor belt of cloud, that's the jet stream aloft and disallowed the colder air to dig jet stream aloft and disallowed the colderairto dig in jet stream aloft and disallowed the colder air to dig in from the northern climes, that will help build those big shower clouds over the coming days. so far as this evening is concerned, rain will sweep into southern parts of the uk. in the north there will still be some sunshine, late sunshine around across scotland, but cloudy generally speaking, and through the course of this evening that rain will travel northwards. so most of us will get some rain. some of it
2:27 pm
will be heavy, particularly in the north, for example in northern ireland it could be 30 or a0 millimetres of rain, so quite soggy, and by the end of the night that front is across scotland, it is cold and miserable here in the morning at six o'clock, three degrees in glasgow, snow across the mountain tops. and then to the south of that something a little bit drier temporarily before the next weather front sweeps in. you see the speckles in the rain, those are the showers carried by the increasingly strong wind out of the south—west, really gale force around some of the coasts. so it's going to feel quite chilly. but the sun is strong this time of year. so it would come in between the clouds as well. if anything on thursday the winds will get even stronger as this low sweeps in, quite a few isobars, strong winds to the south of the area of low pressure and in fact inland we could talk about 50 mph gusts, pretty strong for this time of year, gales around the coasts, windy in the north, to come and again those big shower clouds producing sudden

downpours with hail and thunder but sunshine in between. and it will feel chilly in those heavy showers and the gusty winds. on friday i think the winds are going to be a little lighter. still a noticeable breeze, though, but there will be fewer showers around on good friday. how about the outlook into easter? again, that mixed bag continues. i think by the time we get to sunday, i think across most parts of the uk there should be some drier weather and a bit of sunshine, too. bye—bye.
