speculation, did the opposite, with the princess issuing a statement to say she had made some edits to the image. a turning point appears to have been this thanksgiving service in windsor, for king constantine of greece at the end of february. the rest of the royal family were there but the prince of wales pulled out that morning, very suddenly, due to a personal matter. we now know this was around the time the princess was diagnosed and began her treatment. it has been an incredibly turbulent time for the family. the couple's priority has been to protect their children and ensure they have time to explain what's wrong to prince george, princess charlotte and prince louis. they now hope the speculation and rumours will stop as they spend time privately as a family for the easter holiday. in windsor, with the family live there was support. i in windsor, with the family live there was support.— in windsor, with the family live there was support. i think she's been brave _ there was support. i think she's been brave to _ there was support. i think she's been brave to set _ there was support. i think she's

for her and prince william. and, of course, and most importantly, she has said in that statement for their three young children, george, charlotte and louis, who were told about the news a little while ago. so they have had some time to come to terms with it, to try to understand it. and catherine and prince william have had to make them and help them understand what must be a confusing time for the children and the couple felt today. and the couple felt today this evening, earlier on, was the right time for the news to be made public. and it is, of course, the start of easter holidays
11:49 pm
for the three children. and so they won't be at school now that this news has been made public. the family, of course, live here in windsor, about half a mile away from where we are in the grounds of windsor castle in adelaide cottage. it's secluded, they have privacy there, but they very much stress that they now want to have that privacy while catherine continues with the chemotherapy and also to come to terms herself with her diagnosis. and we heard from the we've had reaction from obviously from a number of quarters, including from the british prime minister, saying that, you know, sending his support, but also that she should be afforded the privacy to focus on her treatment. he talked about the recent weeks, she's been subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media. and it was quite unprecedented, wasn't it, the kind of level of conspiracy theories that was happening online about her. yes. and since her operation, which she this evening called a major, majorabdominal surgery injanuary at a hospital in london, she since then, there has been a huge amount of speculation, particularly online. a lot of that was wild speculation about the princess's health.
11:50 pm
and so what they will be hoping for now is that now that the news of her cancer diagnosis has been made public, that people will give them that privacy in terms of other reaction.. in terms of other reaction. buckingham palace released a statement a little earlier on from the king. it says, the king is so proud of catherine for her courage in speaking as she did and remains in the closest contact with with his beloved daughter in law. and also in the last hour or so, there has been a statement from the duke and duchess of sussex. and in that statement, the couple say we wish health and healing for kate and the family and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace. so a lot of reaction from many people across the world wishing the princess of wales good health in her recovery going forward. and it's a particularly difficult

time for the whole of the royal family because the king is also being treated for cancer. tell us what it will mean for who carries out the duties that they would normally be carrying out. well, a lot of that has fallen onto other members of the royal family, of course, in particular prince william. but you'll recall that after his wife catherine had that abdominal surgery, he then took some time and stepped back from public duties in order to be with her, to help her and also to be around the children as well. but he has been seen back carrying out public duties, and we now know he's been doing that knowing about catherine's cancer diagnosis. but the duties will a lot of them will fall onto prince william. but we know that going forward, he will want to be as close to catherine as possible as she continues her preventative chemotherapy is how it's been put, but also he will be carrying out public duties. but other members of the royal family who've also been stepping up because of the king's cancer diagnosis, they too will likely take on some more of those duties on their behalf.
11:52 pm
as we've been hearing, it has been a turbulent few months for the royal family. and a vacuum of information in recent days and weeks, has led to frenzied speculation about what's been happening, with the prince and princess of wales, as david sillito reports. when in january a brief statement was made that the princess of wales was to have a medical procedure and a period of convalescence, it was meant to be a chance to escape the daily pressures of media scrutiny has become that what ensued was a deluge of speculation, conspiracy and debate. where is kate middleton? it's been crazy... how much speculation about kate has taken over the internet. _ you're seeing it all across the world. i you're even seeing people who don't normally pay attention _ to the royal family getting involved in speculating. and throwing theories around. you're also seeing a lot ofjokes- and a lot of memes, but within that, there is a core group of people i and it's a growing group of people
