hello and welcome to sportsday, i'm will perry, here's what's coming up for you. rory mcllroy says it redemption, not revenge, as europe look to regain the ryder cup in rome. newcastle knock manchester city out of the english football league cup. and former head coach of spain's world cup—winning side is being investigated as part of the criminal case against luis rubiales. welcome along, the clock is ticking down until we see that first tee shot at the ryder cup in rome. it all gets under way in the italian capital on friday morning with europe
2:46 am
looking to reclaim the trophy after being demolished by the usa two years ago. our sports news correspondent andy swiss is in italy for us. both teams have practised over nine holes today. they will practice again over nine holes tomorrow before the action gets under way on friday. over the course of the three days of buildup, all the players talk to the media at some point and today it was rory mcilroy*s turn. mcilroy was distraught after europe lost the ryder cup last time two years ago in wisconsin. mcilroy himself had a disappointing few days. earlier he was speaking to my colleague stephen watson who asked him whether he was ready for revenge. i am ready. i wouldn't say revenge. i think more like redemption for ourselves and there was a few guys that were on that team that thought we certainly could have got more out of ourselves. hopefully we do this time around. the opposite end of

the spectrum we have one of the newcomers bob macintyre who posted a photo of himself wearing ryder cup pyjamas. very fetching indeed. macintyre also said he is enjoying his experience here and enjoyed the experience of the unique europe locker room which their captain luke donald has posted a video tour of. lots of memorabilia, lots of photos including of the late great seve ballesteros. bob said he had hoped those images would be inspirational on his ryder cup debut. kind of a football changing room feel. got the lockers on one side and then you go through to another room that gives you goosebumps when you walk into that room and see, they got a shot of seve. it is special. you're in a special week, you're in a golf tournament that means the world to the best players
2:48 am
on the planet. the american team continuing their preparations as well. they have three out of this year's four major winners in brooks koepka, brian harman and wyndham clark who won the us open earlier this summer. in an interview last week clark said he wants to have a matchup with rory mcilroy because, quote, "i like to think i'm better than him." some people interpreted that as disrespectful but today clark insisted that was not the case. if i don't think i am better than every player here then what am i doing? if i'm trying to be the best player in the world, which is what i want to be, i have to believe that. right now, maybe i am not. he's had a way better career than me. that is obvious. i also have to have the self belief i can beat anyone out here. it is kinda funny to me that people took it that way because theyjust kind of saw i said i am better than him and i want to beat him. of course i want to beat him
2:49 am
and of course i believe i can beat him. it is interesting how things get taken out of context. both teams, it is not long to go. tomorrow we have the opening ceremony and find out the pairings for the opening morning and the ryder cup gets under way first thing on friday. now, how about this for a shot? not only has novak djokovic won 2a grand slams but he can also pull this out the bag. this is the opening hole of the all star celebrity match, and he nailed his iron shot from out of the first cut of rough, beautifully on to the green. for my level, he was great. i'm going to remember this experience for the rest of my life, no doubt. never had an opportunity to play golf in front of so many people, probably never going to happen again. it was marvellous. really had a lot of fun. there were nine games in the english football league cup on tuesday night with teams hoping to book their place in the third round.
2:50 am
alexandr isak got the only goal as newcastle knocked out manchester city. leicester were in front at liverpool, but cody gakpo, dominic szoboslai and diogo jota turned the game on it's head. reiss nelson scored the only goal for arsenal at brentford. james garner's first everton goal was followed up by dominic calvert lewin as they beat aston villa. so here's how the draw for the third round looks. the stand outs see holders manchester united welcome newcastle, liverpool go to bournemouth, and west ham go up against arsenal, while league two side exeter*s reward for knocking out premier league luton, is a home draw against middlesborough. a 700 mile round trip for those boro fans. ties will commence on the week of monday the 30th of october. there were also three quarterfinal ties played in the scottich cup. martin boyle scored twice for hibs as they beat st mirren 4—2. rangers thrashed livingston at ibrox. graham shinnie and estaer sokler were on the scoresheet as aberdeen beat ross county, who had jack baldwin sent off after just 14 minutes. and here's the line up for the semi finals.
2:51 am
hearts taking on rangers, it's hibs against aberdeen. both ties will take place at hampden on the weekend of fourth and fifth of november, with the final on the 17th of december. chelsea captain reece james has been charged by the football association for an alleged incident in the tunnel after saturday's defeat against aston villa. the england defender didn't feature in the match because of injury. the fa say: "it's alleged he used improper, insulting, "or abusive words or behaviour, towards a match official." james has until friaday to respond to the charge. england midfielder georgia stanway has extended her contract with bayern munich until 2026. the 24—year—old joined in may 2022 after leaving manchester city. she's since scored 10 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions for bayern, who were crowned frauen—bundesliga champions last season. meanwhile scotland and manchester united midfielder emma watson has ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty. watson was injured in the final training session before scotland's 2—1 defeat
2:52 am
against england on friday. the 17—year—old, who joined united from rangers this summer, is now receiving treatment at carrington. jorge vilda, the former head coach of spain's world cup—winning side, is being investigated as part of the criminal case against luis rubiales. vilda was sacked this month amid the fallout from the behaviour of spanish football federation president rubiales — at the world cup final last month. rubiales kissed forward jenni hermoso, which she says was not consensual. vilda will appear before spain's national court on october the 10th. uruguay beat namibia in lyon to record their first pool win at the rugby union world cup and deny the african nation a first win in the competition. namibia raced in to a 14—0 lead by half time, but uruguay responded in the second half through tries by baltazar amaya, santiago arata and bautista basso. uruguay can still mathmetically reach the knockout stage but it's hugely unlikey, however if they finish third in their group they'll guarentee qualification
2:53 am
for the next world cup in australia. new zealand thrashed england 57—36 to level the series at 1—1 and take netball*s tiny jamison trophy to a decider. the roses squad, which features no players from the team that finished as runners—up in the world cup, is being led by technical coach liana leota, and the decision to take a relatively inexperienced group in to this series has drawn criticism from new zealand netball chief executive jenny wylie, who labelled them a b—team. well earlier, bbc sport's hugh ferris spoke to former england captain ama agbeze about how the silver ferns have reacted. i think the first text we saw the silver fern*s come out, they lost. it almost seemed like they took their foot off the pedal. they had an expectation around the team england were going to send. and when they didn't see any names from the world cup, they thought this is the b team from england. potentially didn't approach the game as a typical test against england. everybody understands
2:54 am
that teams have to bring in new talent at some stagem cannotjust keep pushing forward with experienced players because people retire, people get injured. often when you are injecting new players into an international scenario, they need support around them and experienced players. you might put one or two people on at any one time and for a small amount of time. i think new zealand were startled and shocked it was no, almost no recognisable names. that context, the background to the first test and then the result that happened, it certainly led to some in new zealand saying perhaps the outrage that preceded it was not as well—placed as it might have been and perhaps new zealand need to concentrate on just winning matches rather than worrying about the strength of the opposition they are facing. definitely and as a player, you should not be concerned with who the opposition are bringing, just prepare irrespective. it is an england team so prepare and play your best and deliver the best you have.
2:55 am
actually, i think there is probably a bit of unrest in new zealand in terms of the fact there was so much concern. i think the ceo has a space to have those discussions because as an international federation, you are looking at ticket sales, marketing and that type of thing. everyone has a long—term strategic plan. the team that were going, they thought it would impact on that plan and their sponsorship and that type of thing. just enough time to recap our top story. rory mcilroy says it redemption, not revenge, as europe look to regain the ryder cup in rome. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website. that's bbc.co.uk/sport. from me, will perry and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye.

hello there. well, it's rather stormy on wednesday out towards the north and the west, storm agnes clearing, of course, overnight. and then, thursday, it's looking a lot calmer. it'll still be rather blustery, particularly through the morning. still some coastal gales in northern scotland, but some sunshine around for most, clouding over from the west into the afternoon. so, there goes storm agnes, that deep area of low pressure, gradually filling the winds, lightning and the rain pulling away, too. it is a mild start to thursday morning. temperatures no lower for most of us than 13—15 celsius, so more or less what some spots would expect to see by day at this time of year. now, we're between weather systems, so it's a dry and a bright start. still rather blustery out there. brisk southwesterly winds, possibly some coastal gales for northern scotland. clouding over from the west as we head through the afternoon and parts of northern ireland and western scotland, maybe western wales will see some showers a bit later on through the day as well.
2:57 am
temperatures a little lower than they were on wednesday, but still mild for the time of year — 16—20 celsius for most. now, on thursday night, it does stay very mild indeed. we'll still see some outbreaks of rain, possibly a little feature just moving into the south and the east as we head into friday morning, too, potentially. a mild start to the day — lows between 12—16 celsius at this time. now, a little feature could possibly give us some outbreaks of rain towards the south and the east on friday morning, perhaps, but that is set to clear away. some showers towards the north—west of scotland again. but in the middle, there'll be a lot of dry, bright weather, plenty of sunshine around. the winds are a lot lighter, and again, temperatures are expected to peak at around 17—20 celsius. so, again, above the seasonal average, and that's generally where they're expected to stay as we head through the course of the weekend as well. now, there will be some wet weather around at times, i think particularly on saturday, from this area of low pressure just pushing
2:58 am
in from the west there. so, turning rather wet, rather windy, towards western areas of scotland, northern ireland, possibly western wales as well as we head through the afternoon. but further south and east, it does look as if it will stay largely dry. again, temperatures in the mid to the high teens for most, maybe 20 celsius in the south. those temperatures in the south and the east climbing further on sunday for the start of october. bye— bye.
