manchester united have a really tough start. they are in munich, up against the german champions, bayern. and they, of course, boast the england captain harry kane, who has made a really solid start in the bundesliga since his summer move from spurs. united have had a troubled season — off—field issues, injuries — and they go into the match after back—to—back defeats. we'll get the latest from the allianz arena in a moment, but first, here's ben croucher. they are two cities whose european histories will be inexorably and indeed tragically linked. in munich and in manchester, it can be about more thanjust and in manchester, it can be about more than just football. but in a little over an hour, 22 men will walk out at one of the modern game's great arenas, on the start of their latest journey to rise above europe's elite.— latest journey to rise above europe's elite. latest journey to rise above euroe's elite. ., , ., europe's elite. three defeats from five for united, _ europe's elite. three defeats from five for united, man _ europe's elite. three defeats from five for united, man united - europe's elite. three defeats from five for united, man united one, l five for united, man united one, brighton, three.— five for united, man united one, briuhton, three. , ., , ,, , brighton, three. hope always springs eternal and man _

let's just return to one of last night's matches in the champions league, and an incredible finish at the stadio 0limpico in rome. lazio were trailing atletico madrid deep into injury time, so their goalkeeper, ivan provedel — in the yellow, at the far post — went up for a corner. nothing came of the first delivery, but he stayed up and made a wonderful run, latching onto a cross, and glanced the equaliser. the italian is just the fourth keeper to score in the champions league. the first in 13 years. the newcastle fan who was stabbed on the eve of their champions league match against ac milan is now back home and "on the mend", according to his family. eddie mckay, who is 58, says it was an unprovoked attack. italian police are still investigating. he was hospitalised on monday night for stab wounds in his arm and back. spain's women will fulfill their nations league fixtures, after overnight talks with the spanish federation. the promise of "immediate and profound changes"

within the organistation has seen them call off their strike. it wasn't unanimous, though, with two players — mapi leon and patri guijarro — leaving the squad and saying they need to actually "see a process" of change. the bbc*s guy hedgecoe spoke to me from madrid. the areas that we believe the players have been focusing on in particular and have been particularly worried about our personnel in the federation. so the players seem to think there are still people higher up in the federation who are for example allies of luis rubiales, the former federation chief resigned because of that kiss he gave tojenni hermoso. that he still has a power base there. and also, they had concerns about the way that women's football was being run in more general terms at the top level. the sports minister has spoken today. now, he wouldn't give any specifics about the kind of changes that we can
6:41 pm
expect, but he did say that we can expect, but he did say that we can expect some changes to come into effect by friday and that obviously is the date when spain faces sweden. it is still a slightly uneasy peace, isn't it? two of those players in that squad who were due to be travelling to sweden tomorrow, mapi leon and patri guijarro, they were in that original group who have refused to go to the world cup, they are still not happy about these promises. are still not happy about these romises. , , ,.., promises. there is still discontent there. so this _ promises. there is still discontent there. so this wasn't _ promises. there is still discontent there. so this wasn't unanimous. | promises. there is still discontent| there. so this wasn't unanimous. i mean, it's close to unanimous if you take into account there were 21 players who seemed to accept the terms. but those two players, first of all, we were told by the government actually that they were not in the right frame of mind to go and play against sweden. but we have heard a little more that they actually have reservations in terms of the negotiations and what had

been agreed. bud of the negotiations and what had been agreed-— of the negotiations and what had been areed. * ., .., , been agreed. and of course, there are many. — been agreed. and of course, there are many. many — been agreed. and of course, there are many, many more _ been agreed. and of course, there are many, many more players- been agreed. and of course, therej are many, many more players who been agreed. and of course, there - are many, many more players who said they were not going to sign up for national duty. there was something like 39 who said they weren't not going to make themselves available for their country. and you just wonder the riffs that might appear between the players perhaps and how much damage has been done to the women's game over the last month. jenni hermoso, the player at the centre of that initial storm was kissed by luis rubiales, she has talked about this idea that there are powers that be who have been trying to manipulate and divide the team. because she was not called up to this squad. and montse tome, the coach, when she gave her press conference a couple of days ago, she said she was not calling upjenni hermoso becausejenni hermoso needed to be protected. now, jenni hermoso immediately came out and said, who do i need to be protected from from what? and she seemed to dispute that. so that was just one example of how there is a great deal of
6:43 pm
confusion surrounding all of this. not all the players seem to be necessarily agreeing on the concessions being made by the federation. and certainly, this is a big challenge to their unity as a group. let's have a quick look at some of the other football headlines. lionesses' head coach sarina wiegman will coach great britain women's team at the paris 0lympics next year — that's if they qualify for the games. that rests with england and how well they do in the nations league. baroness sue campbell will step down from her role as director of women's football at the football association next year. the 74—year—old joined the fa in 2016 and has been credited with helping to transform the women's game. tottenham's ivan perisic is expected to miss most of the season with a serious acl injury. the croatian international — who's featured for spurs in every game this season — picked up the injury during a non—contact training session.

british gymnastics has published a list of 62 people who have been banned or expelled from the sport over the past 30 years. most of them are coaches. it comes after last year's whyte review — an independent report that found systemic abuse within gymnastics. 0ur correspondent natalie pirks has been across this story. natalie, why did british gymnastics feel compelled to release this list? well, like you mentioned, last year's whyte review painted this picture really of a sport when the well—being of gymnast was not put at the heart of british gymnastics culture. it talked about quite harrowing testimony of gymnasts being forced to train on broken bones and tyranny of scales led to many developing eating disorders. but the review itself did not call for this banned list, this is something british gymnastics pledged themselves last october when they printed their reforms. it has taken until now because they have gone back 30 years, which is a surprise
6:45 pm
because the list is pretty short. 62 names, all but one of whom are coaches. we have not been given many details as to why they have been banned or expelled beyond the fact that most of them are either criminal convictions or safeguarding issues. the list also shows only 11 coaches since the whyte review was commissioned in 2020 have been banned in that time. and white herself, the barrister behind the review, has told us tonight she is surprised by the lack of detail in that list. by; surprised by the lack of detail in that list. * , , ., , that list. as is the campaign group g mnasts that list. as is the campaign group gymnasts for _ that list. as is the campaign group gymnasts for change, _ that list. as is the campaign group gymnasts for change, who - that list. as is the campaign group gymnasts for change, who have i that list. as is the campaign group i gymnasts for change, who have been very vociferous throughout this process. they say the list should be a lot longer. process. they say the list should be a lot longer-— a lot longer. yes, to say they are unha-- a lot longer. yes, to say they are unhappy is _ a lot longer. yes, to say they are unhappy is an — a lot longer. yes, to say they are unhappy is an understatement, l a lot longer. yes, to say they are i unhappy is an understatement, they have got this a serious institutional betrayal. because there are a lot of people we expected to be on that list who simply are not there. let's listen now to a representative from gymnasts for change, the group pushing for global reform. i think the publication _
