hello, and welcome to sportsday. we'll start with the premier league — and burnley have got their first point of the season, after drawing 1—1 with nottingham forest. vincent kompany*s side opened the scoring through zeki amdouni's 20—yard strike in the first half, before callum hudson—odoi got the equaliser on his debut for forest. it wasn't without its drama, though — burnley*s lyle foster had a goal disallowed for handball which would've put them back in the lead, before being sent off in stoppage time with a straight red. this result means burnley stay in the relegation zone, while forest move out of the bottom half of the table and up to eighth.
12:46 am
the thing with the premier league is, when used —— when you play city, aston villa and tottenham in your first three games, i'd love to have control and things go our way. but it's the same for forest when they play against these games, the same with us, with the sheffield united — that's why a point is so valuable at the moment. but for us, the biggest thing is if we keep progressing and keep getting better, and loads of these premier league players will get better soon, then it's an exciting team beyond even to this season, but the season is obvious he the priority, with us being in a battle, of course. we just want to grow, we changed our shape, we got new players — changed our shape, we got new players and, we want to find a new _ players and, we want to find a new way — players and, we want to find a new way of progressing. by the only way — new way of progressing. by the only way to do that is to take every— only way to do that is to take every day— only way to do that is to take every day with great importance. and really support and back— importance. and really support and back the players to be the best _ and back the players to be the best they can be, training levels _ best they can be, training levels have gone through the roof since we got everybody back, — roof since we got everybody back, and that's good because i believe — back, and that's good because i believe in — back, and that's good because i believe in the process of training, and we want to grow.
12:47 am
when— training, and we want to grow. whenwe— training, and we want to grow. when we managed to stay in the league _ when we managed to stay in the league last year, which became a fight — league last year, which became a fight for— league last year, which became a fight for survival, what it did was_ a fight for survival, what it did was give us the opportunity to continue to build and that's what — to continue to build and that's what we — to continue to build and that's what we want to do. what a start to the la liga season for girona — they are up to third in the table following a 4—2 win over granada. they haven't lost a game this season and sitjust behind real madrid and barcelona who are first and second respectively. different story for granada though, who have lost four out of five. in serie a, verona and bologna both had chances to run away with all three points, but neither could break the deadlock. torino comfortably beat salernitana 3—0 for their second win of the season. so, they go up to seventh in the table. while salernitana are without a win in four matches. now, the champions league is nearly back and newcastle united's 20—year wait is nearly over. they kick it off at the san siro against ac milan.
12:48 am
manchester city also begin the defence of their trophy on tuesday with the scottish champions celtic playing, too, before the competition sees the return of arsenal and manchester united on wednesday. joe lynskey has more. for newcastle united, this time to take on the next hurdle, the next step in their new era is a trip to ac milan and the champions league. the last match in the city was in 2003 when the 2—2 draw saw them just miss out on the knockouts. two decades on, this trip is their reward for a year of transformation. newcastle's second win of the season and on a winning run. i am here playing football at the champions week and wherever i want, it is fantastic. business because it gets. we're doing this with a proper group and i think it is the way
12:49 am
we should do it, properly. the group will take newcastle the champions league giants — but right now, the team to beat of the team who holds the trophy. manchester city start the defence at home to belgrade, and it is a match and a group that on paper, look straightforward and the winners feel already that they have done the hardest part. it is harder to defend it then waited for the first time. no, easier. it was more difficult the first time around. always the first one, but it is incredible for us the first time but it was just that, let's try to win tomorrow. just one win would mean so much for the celtic, progress on the stage is the coaches here are dodged tojudge. brendan rodgers is back in
12:50 am
glasgow with belief. his teams start before atletico. it is a group celtic feel that they can get through. anything is possible. people ask and what to do and to achieve anything the spirit of this team will never be broken. and we have to very hard and was seaward texas. manchester united go to a start and henry kane's byron munich will be the first champions week in charge. and they returned to the top tier in the first match year since 2017 is at home. it is the first night of a journey be hopeful and just up the road and the champions league final injune, the road that starts this week. joe lynskey, bbc news.

spain's players have insisted again that they are continuing to boycott the women's national side despite being named in the latest squad. a group of 81 players boycotted the national team after then spanish fa boss luis rubiales kissed forward jenni hermoso following last month's final, saying that they did not yet "feel in a safe place". 15 members of the team that won the world cup last month have been included in a squad for upcoming nations league fixtures, including two—time ballon d'or winner alexia putellas. however, hermoso was left out. here's our women's sport reporterjo currie. the squad for these matches are expected to be announced last week, but it had to be postponed after 39 of the players, including 21 of the world cup winners, said they would remain on strike until further change at the spanish federation took place. fast—forwa rd to federation took place. fast—forward to today, the

brand—new head coach has finally named her squad. now as part of the squad, there are 15 world cup winners in there. there are also players such as might be leon who refused to play at the world cup, but there is no place forjenni hermoso, of course the player at the centre of the kiss at the final. the captain of scotland women, rachel corsie, says she believes the scottish fa can lead the way in the fight for equality, after ending the dispute with the national women's team. last week, corsie and the team withdrew an inequality case against the association after an understanding was reached. speaking ahead of scotland's opening nations league game against england, corsie wouldn't go into specifics but said she'd achieved "parity". the association have set a really great precedent. the determination is going to be considered, one that can be a leaderfor others. now that the resources and everything that goes in the preparation is going to be a really high level.

in cricket, and harry brook will be rested for the one—day series against ireland that starts this week. that's after he was named in england's world cup squad which starts next month. he got the call—up after jason roy was dropped, following back spasms which meant he missed the recent new zealand series. obviously very disappointed, i'm sure he's hurt. but also, he knows what professional sports is like. he's been around long enough to know. i'm sure he's had disappointment in his career as well. we had to do the same thing with harry brooke as well, but this time for him, it was a good call. that's how professional sport is, it's not nice at times. it can be amazing, but it's not always highlight reels. dan evans was at the heart of a british davis cup victory at a sellout a0 arena in manchester on sunday. in the same day, evans delivered in both of great britain's singles and doubles wins over france to carry great britain through to the quarter—finals in malaga.
12:54 am
tennis journalist tumaini carayol was watching the weekend's matches in manchester. i think he's a perfect example of the connection that the davis cup has made for players and people who aren't in london or in certain cities where there are tennis courts. it's there are tennis courts. it's the same around the world, as well, with wherever big tournaments are. these events can reach more people. for evans, he said that what brought him into tournaments democrat tennis... seeing players like greg was up close, and i think that that would be the same. this is the first time that the davis cup was in manchester and 29 years, which is a long time. why there are
12:55 am
so many fans willing to come on sunday, so yes, it's important that this event is hosted in different parts of the country so more people can see tennis and can be inspired, and that's clearly hopefully what's happened this week. that's all from us. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello there. it's definitely been a gear change with the weather story in recent days, an autumnal flavour to our weather. we'll certainly see threatening—looking skies for the remainder of the week, and some of the rain at times really quite heavy. so here's the next batch, pushing in off the atlantic — just look how many isobars there are on the chart. the winds a feature, and some of that rain really quite heavy. so, to start with, on tuesday,
12:56 am
the wettest of the weather moving out of northern ireland across southern scotland, northern england, and wales, and we'll see this frontal system moving its way south and north throughout the day. now, it never really gets all the way across central and southern england, so here, some brighter skies into the afternoon, still pretty windy. gusts of winds a0—a5mph in places, maybe close to 60mph in exposed west—facing coast, and the heaviest of the rain across northwest england, the scottish borders, and northern ireland. the far north of scotland, bright, as well — not quite as windy here, but it will be noticeably fresher. top temperatures here around 13—15 celsius. we mightjust see 20 celsius further south if we get a little bit of afternoon brightness. now, as we move out of tuesday into wednesday, there's another area of low pressure, and this one has the remnants, a little bit of energy from ex—hurricane lee in there. so this one, again, will mean business — a lot of heavy rain, sweeping its way steadily eastwards. don't forget the brighter

greens, denoting the intensity of that rain, and the winds, again, a feature 50—60mph not out of the question, particularly close to the centre of the low, and far west of scotland. top temperatures again, 14—21 celsius the high. so, as we move out of wednesday, there's more to come — and it's all because the jet stream at the moment has sunk that little bit further south, it's intensified and centred across the uk. now we all know by now, it's the jet stream, this ribbon of fast—moving air high up in the atmosphere that drives in areas of low pressure. and if it's centred across the uk, then it'll continue to push further areas of low in our direction. just look what's waiting in the wings as we head through the weekend. so, be prepared for some showers or longer spells of rain, the winds remaining a feature. a brief window of finer weather potentially on saturday. take care.
