wales and south—west england probably seen fewer showers this afternoon and probably more sunshine. a few light showers coming and going in northern ireland and frequent showers in northern scotland today. a cool day, temperatures below par for the time of year. showers keep going tonight across north—east scotland and england with temperatures between 11 and 14. tomorrow we do it all again. another showery day. most starting on a dry note with sunshine and showers getting going in the afternoon. they will favour eastern england because here we have a convergence zone with wind being bashed together and the showers are most likely to form. away from that you have a decent chance of dryness tomorrow afternoon with sunshine coming through. temperatures between the high teens and low 20s. however, we have more rain in the forecast and those totals are mounting up, particularly as we get into saturday. we are only three days into the new month and parts of southern england have already had a third of the �*s worth of rain and

there is more to come from this area of low pressure on saturday bringing notjust of low pressure on saturday bringing not just wet but windy weather well. the wet weather arriving initially on friday night and saturday morning in northern ireland. localised flooding with the rain being intense. from there the rain sweeps into england and wales during saturday with the strongest winds reaching 60 mph in western wales, in the 50s in southern england, bringing localised disruption and the heavy rain around as well. some of the brightest weather will be further north in scotland, a mixture of sunny spells, passing showers, the weather 0k of sunny spells, passing showers, the weather ok but temperature is not great, 14—16 in the north end may be 17 further south. we have seen these kinds of outlooks for many weeks now, more showers in the forecast through sunday, staying and settled on monday and tuesday. however, then we should see a big change in the weather into the latter part of next week with the first area of high pressure for more than seven weeks. that's why it has

star to get involved with english football, tom brady, at birmigham city. the women's world cup has lost another heavyweight. after brazil and canada, now germany have failed to reach the knockout stage for the first time, with colombia and morocco qualifying from group h. the two time champions went behind to south korea, who only had a tiny chance of qualifying themselves, but germany's equaliser from alexandra popp briefly had them going through. but the second goal they needed never came, and after 15 minutes of injury time, the final whistle did.

with the nfl legend, who will become the chair of an advisory board, offering up his expertise on nutrition and opening up possible new commercial deals. brady retired from playing earlier this year, while birmingham finished 17th in the championship and haven't been in the premier league since 2011. both had already qualified for the semifinals but england's victory over australia at the netball world cup was a historic one nonetheless. the roses had never beaten the world number ones at the tournament before, but held on for a 56—55 victory in cape town. england held their nerve to earn a stunning win over the commonwealth champions, overturning an eight—goal third—quarter deficit. eleanor cardwell with the deciding goal as england finish as group winners above australia, who will play jamaica in the last four. england's semifinal will very likely be against defending champions new zealand.

it's the first day of the uci cycling world championship in glasgow today, but it's been a disappointing start for great britain. the defence of their men's team pursuit title ended after a crash in qualifying, as charlie tanfield slipped coming out of the final corner. britain were already down to three riders so did not set an official time and went out of the competition, having been on course for the second fastest qualifying time behind denmark. tanfield received medical treatment on the track for several minutes before being able to walk off unassisted. meanwhile, the venue for the next rugby league world cup has changed again. that was also due to be in france in 2025 but was postponed a year after they withdrew for financial reasons. so now the southern hemisphere will host the tournament in 2026 the last edition of the competition was held in the uk in 2022. the same year france was awarded hosting rights for the next one after initial plans for it to be held in north america for the first time were scrapped. the ashes test series has also been

of i% to 5.25%. it's the 14th rate rise in a row and means they're at their highest for more than 15 years as part of the bank's efforts to tackle high inflation. here's the bank of england governor andrew bailey. low and stable inflation is the foundation of a healthy economy. high inflation hurts the least well—off the most. the projection that we present today is very much in two parts. i'm going to begin with the first part, which is the near term outlook for inflation over the remainder of this year. before then turning to the second, which is the medium term outlook and the implications for monetary policy. so starting with the near—term outlook. this chart shows the evolution of consumer price inflation and its components since 2018. it shows that inflation has come off the peak in october last year and that it continues to fall over the rest of this year

in our near term projection. that's the piece shown in the shaded part of the chart. now this all can be attributed in large part to a fall in contribution from energy. fuel prices have declined and electricity and gas prices have stabilised, albeit at a higher level. the dark orange bars in this chart show how the contribution from energy prices is falling and turning negative, we think, in the coming months. now, given ofgem's price cap on electricity and gas bills, and the way it slows down the pass through of wholesale energy prices to consumer bills, we expect inflation to take a further step down in thejuly data, which will be published in two weeks' time. we think that will come down to around 7% at that point, followed by another larger step down in 0ctober�*s data, which will be published in november to around about 5% on that basis. now, this more gradual pass also substantially helps to explain the difference between current

headline inflation in this country and in the euro area, where wholesale energy prices feed
