after he left the white house. earlier in florida, protesters and supporters both came out for his first day in court in miami. we saw a protester hold a lock him up sign lung at the motorcade as trump was leaving the trial. he was officially arraigned there after being indicted by the grand jury in special counseljack smith's investigation last week. after leaving court, the former president paid a visit to a cafe in miami. these are some spectacular pictures. beside him you'll see his co—defendant, walt nauta, his personal aidee and supporters there prayed for trump. he remained defiant, saying he thought things were going great. he called it a "rigged deal", those are the pictures here you're seeing right now. this was a little bit earlier in the day and then he flew back to bedminster to give that speech, that is still going on right now. so that is what's been happening today. been a very busy day, an historic day of events. let's bring back our panel as we're still seeing
2:01 am
those images of the former president there speaking in bedminster. helena, iwant president there speaking in bedminster. helena, i want to come to you now. you have been following again everything that's been happening in miami and also watching these — speech rather from the former president there. ijust speech rather from the former president there. i just want to ask you also what you have been hearing there on the ground today in florida on how they — how residents there, how floridians really feel about how all of this will affect the former president and his chances to become president again? chances to become president auain? . , , ,., chances to become president auain? . , , , ., ., again? certainly depends on who ou ask in again? certainly depends on who you ask in all _ again? certainly depends on who you ask in all of _ again? certainly depends on who you ask in all of this. _ you ask in all of this. certainly a lot of backers for donald trump and a lot of backers coming out. donald trump calling on his supporters and they did rally. i would say hundreds as opposed to the 50,000 that law enforcement here had been potentially bracing for. there have been concerns about whether violence would flair, particularly after some extremist threats from various corners of the internet. that didn't come to pass, but nevertheless some
2:02 am
tense moments here between trump supporters and the tens of people who oppose him who have been coming out here today. but i was speaking to people and i was saying, you know, "do you fully support donald trump? are you concerned about these documents?", and we did start to see some people saying, "i support trump but i support the republican party", and in fact, desantis looks like an interesting candidate for them. they're pleased with his record as governor and they say that essentially desantis is somebody who comes without the baggage of trump. that's what some people here have been pointing to me. what some people here have been pointing to me-_ pointing to me. that's interesting. _ pointing to me. that's interesting. to - pointing to me. that's interesting. to hear . pointing to me. that's - interesting. to hear those voices on the ground there. rinna, coming to you now, why do you think — why do you think other candidates for this republican nomination as we heard just there from helena, some people are somewhat cautious about the former president's chances to be president's chances to be president again in a general election in particular. why do you think other candidates
2:03 am
haven't taken this opportunity to take a direct shot at the former president to really distance themselves? i would sa it's distance themselves? i would say it's the — distance themselves? i would say it's the power _ distance themselves? i would say it's the power of - distance themselves? i would say it's the power of the - say it's the power of the purse. trump has been a masterful fundraiser for republicans and admittedly many have come out saying as much that he is the reason, not the man, but his fundraising prowess is the reason they stay aligned with him. he's able to garner so much support from a universe of small donors for years as it has been sustained. what we're seeing here is a desire to want to stay close to the donor. i see ron desantis has been employed even prior to him formally announcing his launch into the gop primary is that he wanted to see how much of the maga voters he could peel off from trump, if he went hard right and he still very much there in really pandering to that base, that trump base. because he wants to bring their fundraising dollars to him — himself. desantis has a very
2:04 am
large war chest right now but i think the name of the game is money here when we talk about how it's going to last throughout this very long primary. there's a long road ahead. so how will this super pack that support trump, how will they spend on his opponents in the primary? who will run out of money first? and start dropping out? so there are lot of questions here as to why trump maintains the support of many, notjust in washington, but those who are supposed to be against him, opponents in this primary, but i think all roads lead back to money. i think all roads lead back to mone . ., y i think all roads lead back to mone . ., , , ., money. ok. if money is the name ofthe money. ok. if money is the name of the game. _ money. ok. if money is the name of the game, marianne, _ money. ok. if money is the name of the game, marianne, what - money. ok. if money is the name of the game, marianne, what do i of the game, marianne, what do you think of trump using this day and this speech tonight, for example, for his financial gain? for example, for his financial aain? ~ ., for example, for his financial iain? , , for example, for his financial iain? . ., , , , *, gain? well, no surprise. it's his birthday _ gain? well, no surprise. it's his birthday i _ gain? well, no surprise. it's his birthday i think - gain? well, no surprise. it's i his birthday i think tomorrow, or the next day, and he's using that, the arraignment today and his birthday to raise money. money is important in any campaign but it's not the only factor. i think when it comes to money, the high dollar
2:05 am
donors, they'll spread their money around, we have seen that on both sides, democrats and the republicans. the ones that really matter in terms of donations are those small dollar donations which trump has been able to get a lot of them over the years. $5, $10, every week, every month, that they use when they make their solications, check the box for many times unwittingly that the person on the other end that it has to happen every month, but the people who do that are people who also volunteer, who will come out to the rallies, and who will vote for you. that money is actually more important in terms of winning elections then maybe the big dollar donors. i think at this point what we have to look at is the retail politics as well. if you're going to win think race you have to do all of it. i think with the republican candidate fields coming up short is the performances of the people who are in the field thus far. desantis hasn't performed well. he's trying to get better but he really — he's not been able to really connect with people on the trail despite his efforts. nikki haley has been surprisingly, i
2:06 am
think, unprepared in terms of the manyings she delivers and the manyings she delivers and the things she says and she is really consistently contradicted herself. we talked earlier about chris christie who certainly the bull in the china closet and going to make a lot of is and break a lot of plates and all of that, but whether it has any effect remains to be seen. and we can go through the rest of the list. so while all that's happening, donald trump has all the money, all the attention of everybody in the country and around the world despite the fact that he was arraigned today on some of the most serious charges any america could face. serious charges any america could face-— serious charges any america could face. -- american could face. chuck, _ could face. -- american could face. chuck, you _ could face. -- american could face. chuck, you agree - could face. -- american could face. chuck, you agree both l could face. -- american couldl face. chuck, you agree both on that point of trump being far ahead in money and also the other candidates until now, not really performing that well? spot on. i mean, the analysis there was perfect. he is garnering all these grassroots supporters and driving that fundraising base. the critical question here is trying to get the business community, you
2:07 am
know, that american chamber of commerce crowd to solidify support around somebody and know who that candidate is and those packs in that organisationalfundraising organisational fundraising power, which is organisationalfundraising power, which is traditionally behind the republican candidate, to come into the field, and that hasn't happened because they're all wondering who is going to be that person, they want to bet on — they'll bet on a risk but they're not going to bet on a long shot. but the question becomes, as the panellists have said — who is running the best campaign? who has got —— their act together? who has their messaging together, who is being clear with the electorate? and i'm not going to disagree with anything that's been said here tonight. we haven't seen a lot of that from the republican field at large. everybody seems to be reacting to planet orange all the time, rather than articulating what it is that they believe in. desantis comes
2:08 am
closest to that. talking about that, but there is a lack of charisma that seems to plague his campaign. somebody can fill that void though those two boxes, it becomes the candidate that i think the business community solidifies behind and says, "we got to have this guy." it's a big bat and we'll see if it happens. you know, i'm an optimist, you know, despite being irish, and i'll say that — i hope it happens, but i'm really probably not hoping that it's going to happen. hoping that it's going to happen-— hoping that it's going to hauen. ., , ., happen. marianne, 'ust to follow-wt happen. marianne, 'ust to follow-up on * happen. marianne, 'ust to follow-up on what _ happen. marianne, just to follow-up on what chuck i happen. marianne, just to i follow-up on what chuckjust follow—up on what chuckjust said, do you think any of the other candidates could beat trump? i other candidates could beat trum - ? ., * other candidates could beat trum? ., * , , trump? i don't see it. i 'ust don't. trump? i don't see it. i 'ust don-t. lfi trump? i don't see it. i 'ust don't. i mean, i trump? i don't see it. i 'ust don't. i mean, i'm * trump? i don't see it. ijust| don't. i mean, i'm surprised trump? i don't see it. ijust i don't. i mean, i'm surprised at how unprepared many of them are that i have seen to date thus far, had tim scott to that category, nikki haley, i can go down the list. and trump despite, again all of his woes and all of his challenges, they're running the best campaign right now. they're hitting all on cylinders
2:09 am
despite the fact of the legal channels he's face —— challenges he's facing. that tells you a lot there of the republicon field in and of itself. donald trump owns the republican party right now, owned the attention of the country, the media and everybody else, and even on — one of his — you have to say it's one of his worst days, he's making the best out of it ljy he's making the best out of it by raising money defining the debate and defining the terms that this race will be waged. helena, i want to bring you in here because we have been speaking about the man who is considered the biggest challenger to the former president, at least in the polls, that's the florida governor, ron desantis, what have people there been telling you about what they think of ron desantis especially ron desa ntis especially compared ron desantis especially compared to donald trump? yes, there have _ compared to donald trump? yes, there have been _ compared to donald trump? yes, there have been quite _ compared to donald trump? yes, there have been quite a _ compared to donald trump? yes there have been quite a few supporters out and about here for ron desantis. they have been pointing to the fact that he has these trump policies that without the baggage, even people who are out here supporting in the heat of the day, donald trump said, "lock
2:10 am
we're out here supporting donald trump, but ultimately ron desantis doesn't come with these kinds of legal challenges", so i think that could potentially be attractive going forward, but, of course t question will be when do other republican members dare to break away with the line that appears to be holding right now in terms of support for donald trump. we have started to see some of that. remember those remarks from the former attorney general, bill barr, saying even if this indictment holds — if this indictment does holds — if this indictment does hold up f holds — if this indictment does hold upf it's correct, he's toast. mitt romney saying why was he allegedly holding on to these classified documents. until we start to get a bigger push from the republican party, overall here in florida, trump does still appear to be galvanising a lot of support. desantis is second, but a way back. ., * , desantis is second, but a way back. ., v ., desantis is second, but a way back. . *, ., ., , desantis is second, but a way back. . *, . ., , back. that's a really good oint back. that's a really good point to _ back. that's a really good point to bring _ back. that's a really good point to bring up - back. that's a really good point to bring up there. i back. that's a really good i point to bring up there. bill barr saying if what's in this indictment is true, then donald

trump is toast. so, brad, looks like we just lost brad's connection. we have to ask like wejust lost brad's connection. we have to ask him about the legal ramifications of all of that in a moment. but, chuck, just coming back to you and asking you about that as well because we know that for president trump, he is still working on getting his legal team together here and why do you think this has been such a really last—minute flurry of activity for the former president and why it has been more difficult to amass this team around him? well, clearl , this team around him? well, clearly. and _ this team around him? well, clearly, and that's _ this team around him? well, clearly, and that's a - this team around him? well, clearly, and that's a good - this team around him? well, i clearly, and that's a good brad question — they took out two of his lawyers because they were used as witnesses against him which is a very complicated legal theory and one that will be reviewed by the courts that a lawyer cannot cover up a felony offence, has to disclose if a client is acting illegal. but — and so that will be ruled on by thisjudge, that but — and so that will be ruled on by this judge, that will become a significant issue in this trial going forward. but
2:12 am
let me go back because i don't disagree with anything the panellists are saying, but we need to remember this is not a national campaign. this is a state—by—state campaign in a primary. the republican effort starts in iowa, goes to new hampshire, then goes to south carolina. so how you build momentum by putting a hole in his boat in iowa if somebody can, and then build on that as — you know, mccain, bush back in new hampshire when he beat him and then failed in south carolina, but there's gonna be these momentum shifts that are going to happen. i guarantee it's going to happen. because i just cannot fathom the blind loyalty that a majority of the republican party is going to show to a president that, as we have said already, is probably going to be facing multiple indictments by the time iowa
2:13 am
takes place. iformally believe that —— takes place. iformally believe that -- i takes place. iformally believe that —— ifirmly takes place. iformally believe that —— i firmly believe that the georgia indictment will come down, ifirmly the georgia indictment will come down, i firmly believe the january six indictment will come down. and so we have to sort of look ahead here and say, "what is that — what is that narrative that's going on in the electorate?" iowa ians, i have lots of friends from iowa, you know, it is a very awesome place, and those people are going to be asking themselves — can this guy win? can we win? the answerable question is clearly not. clearly he cannot compete. so there will be this dynamic going on going forward. you got to look at that as it relates to look at that as it relates to this very localised audiences with iowa and new hampshire. audiences with iowa and new hampshire-— audiences with iowa and new hampshire. audiences with iowa and new hamshire. ., ., hampshire. now, chuck made some aood hampshire. now, chuck made some good points — hampshire. now, chuck made some good points about _ hampshire. now, chuck made some good points about how— good points about how problematic donald trump's candidacy is for the republican party. notjust because he
2:14 am
demanded full loyalty, and not just because he doesn't play by a set of rules that everybody else seems to play by. i fully believe that he will not debate and that's coming up in a few months. so, you know, we are in a moment where we have to look at the situation for what it is. are we going to have a reckoning as a country and i think that reckoning is coming soon for how we allow people to represent us in the public sphere. when we talk about those people who have left donald trump side, those people who served in his administration, those are people who saw a flagrant disregard for rules and those people saw what he was doing over time was creating notjust a sense of mistrust but a real erosion of our institutions. so i think the earlier point was made by marianne about what donald trump has done to get us to this day, to get himself as a day, notjust us as a country, but himself, arraigned and sent to court for the second time and, yes, there are
2:15 am
other cases taking shape in georgia and occabout january six, 2021, but how we look at today should be really a sense of how american we are and i realise it's a bit funny to make it — tie it to patriotism but if we are a country that believes in laws we have to see this as the serious national security threat that is what the former president did. it wasn'tjust serious the former president did. it wasn't just serious lapses the former president did. it wasn'tjust serious lapses in judgement, it was the real — the disregard for americans who put their lives on the line for us and for our safety every day. so you can draw a direct line to really what's to come in the coming months about the republican party and about the country looking at this former president and saying are we going to allow ourselves to be that way, to be a country that doesn't even trust our institutions anymore? do we trust anyone? do we trust our neighbours? and how does that set us on the world stage moving forward?
2:16 am
interesting point, especially helena, you mentioned the point that this is certainly not the only legal trouble that the former president is facing. take us through what the president, the former president, excuse me, is facing in terms of other indictments in terms of other indictments in new york and other investigations ongoing? even if we are not _ investigations ongoing? even if we are not talking _ investigations ongoing? even if we are not talking about - we are not talking about morally or ethically a former president running for re—election while facing these charges, there is a question of logistical timing. charges, there is a question of logisticaltiming. how charges, there is a question of logistical timing. how would you run a campaign while facing myriad investigation. we're talking about the first indictment we saw in manhattan allegations that donald trump falsified business records to cover up alleged hush money payments to the former porn star stormy daniels. we wait and see when that progresses. then there is another special counsel investigation, also being conducted byjack smith
2:17 am
in washington, dc, taking a look at donald trump off role in the january six insurrection, the assault on the capitol hill, not to mention the efforts that could bring indictment, alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in georgia. myriad legal wrangling there as well. find georgia. myriad legalwrangling there as well.— there as well. and as you are speaking _ there as well. and as you are speaking we _ there as well. and as you are speaking we can _ there as well. and as you are speaking we can see - there as well. and as you are speaking we can see the - there as well. and as you are i speaking we can see the former president wrapping up his speech in bedminster. he has just left the stage there and we heard him earlier speaking about what he called the most evil and heinous abuse of power in history. during the speech is that he will appoint a special prosecutor and go after joe biden if he is elected. again, the former president wrapping up his speechjust after that historic day after being arraigned in miami. marianne, coming back to you now, and we have not heard anything from the current

president, joe biden and he has time and again that he would not comment on this. saying that the white house press secretary, democrats in general, how do you think they will use indictment and the other legal trouble that helena just pointed out going forward, especially as the campaign heats up?— especially as the campaign heatsu? ., , , , heats up? two points, firstly, it's important _ heats up? two points, firstly, it's important to _ heats up? two points, firstly, it's important to underscore l it's important to underscore the fact thatjoe biden, the president of the united states will not comment on this. that is how it should be. nor has the town mayor garland, and thatis the town mayor garland, and that is how it has been, except for the four years when donald trump was in the white house and he continues to portray the way this government worked before him and shows people how he runs it. it really runs it as a wannabe dictator and wants to return to do that even more. that is the crucial point. despite defeating donald trump in 2020, our democracy is still in 2020, our democracy is still in the balance, that the 2024
2:19 am
election, even to defeat donald trump again, certainly helps to stabilise it and reinforce it but we have a lot of work to do and many elections after this to undo the damage that donald trump did in the four years and continues to do and we are watching today any speech and in his desire for retribution, which he has called himself, he has said i am your retribution, thatis has said i am your retribution, that is what is running on. it's important for people to understand that. the stakes could not be any higher except in 2020, and higher now steel and when he talks about the justice department and that magellan did this in biden did this, no, donald trump did this to himself and it's important to himself and it's important to remind people of the processes and laws and procedures that have always gone on injustice matters and legal matters that are going on right now. donald trump, arguably, brides said this earlier, is being treated like any other citizen and probably getting some breaks —— brad

said this. any did not have two pay bail and he kept his passport and he is not subjected to any of that but he is being held to account and donald trump is in this situation and no—one is to blame except donald trump. i think that is a really important thing to remember. shakur, coming to you, you mention the fact we will see the campaign play out in stages and what about the point that marianne just made —— and what about the point that mariannejust made —— chuck hubble democrats reach out to voters and convince them that donald trump is being treated under the rule of the lawjust as any other dependent would be. it as any other dependent would be. , , . ., ., be. it is very clear and marianne _ be. it is very clear and marianne headed - be. it is very clear and marianne headed on l be. it is very clear and l marianne headed on the be. it is very clear and - marianne headed on the head. they— marianne headed on the head. they don't talk about this. they— they don't talk about this. they let _ they don't talk about this. they let the justice department deal with this as an independent branch of government, that that is what they— government, that that is what they are — government, that that is what they are doing. there is a rule of law— they are doing. there is a rule of law that _ they are doing. there is a rule of law that goes on here. let's look_ of law that goes on here. let's look at — of law that goes on here. let's look at what has happened on

for the general election 2024, because you see this real sense amongst american women, suburban women, the independent voters and swing states that there is nobody talking to them right now although they are the people that really come to the polls and engage. we don't see candidates you really speak to them. that is a unique moment we sit in right now when i do worry that republicans will continue to engage in the cultural wars and that will be problematic for them. that is an interesting point. before we 90, an interesting point. before we go, we are looking at what is next with the indictment case. it is expected to enter pre—trial proceedings including disputes of the evidence shown to a jury and whether evidence should be thrown out altogether before going to trial and even though the special counseljack though the special counsel jack smith though the special counseljack smith says he was a speedy trial, the complexity of evidence shown in the indictment could lengthen the time it takes to resolve pre—trial matters. as we heard from brad and all the panellists tonight, it is a very complex case and we do not

know how quickly or slowly the next steps may be. as he said, if you are just tuning in, you're watching the former president speaking after an historic day, arraigned in miami, speaking in bedminster, newjersey. thank you for the panel and for the analysis. thank you for watching bbc news. hello there. a number of places saw the temperature reach 30 celsius on tuesday. we saw 31 celsius in porthmadog in northwest wales, making it the warmest day there so far for wales. next few days, high pressure will continue to bring a lot of dry, sunny, warm weather, but we are losing the humidity, so we'll be a little bit fresher, more comfortable, certainly cooler and fresher during the overnight periods. now, high pressure sitting towards scandinavia will bring a fine day for wednesday. light onshore breezes affecting eastern england — that will bring temperatures down somewhat. could just see an isolated shower, western scotland, perhaps northern ireland, but most places will be dry
2:26 am
and we'll see those temperatures reaching the mid to upper 20 celsius. but always cooler along north sea coast , 20—22 or 23 degrees there. as we head through wednesday night, see a little bit of mist and fog develop once again. most places will be dry, any showers fading away and temperatures ranging from around 19—14 degrees. again, humidity will be lower, so a more comfortable night for sleeping. so, for thursday, then, we start off a little bit of mist and fog here and there. otherwise, it's another dry, sunny day with a little bit of fairweather cloud into the afternoon. again, just a chance of an isolated shower developing across some western areas. most places, though, will remain dry. and again, with that onshore breeze, it's much cooler along north sea coasts — 21 degrees there. it's the mid to high 20s. elsewhere now, we start to see some changes as we push towards the end of the week, this area of low pressure starts to move into western areas. that could bring a few showers, but high pressure continues to bring fine and dry weather for most

of the country for friday. we've lost the onshore breeze, so it will be warmer along north sea coasts. winds will be light across the board. lots of sunshine into the afternoon, but a chance of some showers or thunderstorms pushing into the far west later in the day. but again, those temperatures mid to high 20s for most of us — very pleasantly warm and less humid. as we head into the weekend, though, it does look like this area of low pressure becomes a bit more established across the western side of the country. a few showers could get towards the east as well, but it's always bumping up against that area of high pressure, so it could take its while to reach more southern and eastern areas. but you can see it's an unsettled theme for the weekend and indeed even into next week, but for the best part, it should stay on the warm side.
